The Better Business Bureau is a non-profit organization that was started back in 1912. The reasoning behind this organization was to be considered a marketplace of trust. There are 115 local independent organizations spread out across the United States and spreads to Canada. The council of the Better Business Bureau is located in Arlington, Virginia. The Better Business Bureau gives free business reviews of a large an wide array of businesses. This makes the Better Business Bureau’s website be considered one of the top 1,000 most viewed websites in the country. The Better Business Bureau has a reputation that they promote as well as solicit money from different business that they over see. This makes a question come to many minds how their
I don’t believe the BBB can be truly impartial since it relies on those who paid it. Just like accounting firms have troubles being impartial when auditing for their clients while paid by their clients.
Creating an adequate monitoring system not only protects the best interest of an organization but the consumer also. Furthermore, without these structured protections for the business and consumers, unethical behavior tends to flourish throughout an organization in several different forms. In the case of the Better Business Bureau, it appears that the proper protections were not in place to protect consumers or the organization should have updated its mission statement to account for the many consumer changes since the use of the internet globalized businesses. Furthermore, the leaders of BBB should have worked harder to ensure that employees and companies were punished for allowing his or her unethical behavior to tarnish the organization’s image.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is a well known self-regulatory trade association in the United States. Companies that adhere to self regulation standards meaning the business will exhibit best practices and social responsibility. The BBB creates self regulatory programs for its members and uses the internet, newspaper, and media to inform the public of businesses who have violated self regulatory rules. The BBB's membership dues are around $425. The BBB's purpose is to establish a place of trust between business and consumers, as well as, dispute and complaint resolution services, reliability reports, and arbitration.
I would advise Shania that an LLC would be the best form of business to accomplish her goals. Shania wants to open a Christian coffeehouse and already has a name in mind. Colorado LLC laws allow LLCs to be formed with one or more members, taxes them at a lower rate like partnerships and sole proprietorships, and provides the members with lower liability that protects them from the company’s debt (Scrofano, n.d.). This form of business will give Shania the ability to name her company what she wants and run it how she wants. The limited liability is also desirable.
If you aren't in business, you may have no idea what the BBB is, but if you are, it is either something you love or are terrified of. The better business bureau is an organization that analyzes just about every single business that is in operation, regardless of how big or small they are. This gives other people an understanding of how reputable you are and whether or not they want to do business with you, which is why your score is incredibly important, despite whether you like the bureau or not. If you have shady business practices, engage in any sort of illegal activity that gets reported, or flat out do not do good business, your BBB score is going to suffer and anyone that wants to find that information is going to be able to find it. When business deals are made between several companies, the first thing they are going to do is look up their BBB score to size them up. A lot of places won't even talk to you if you have a low BBB score, which can be a great thing and can be a bad thing at the same time.
The Office of Fair Trading monitors and ensures that all businesses are at even level with consumers. The law protects a business from being demoted by its competitors.
For many years I had very high standards and respect for the Better Business Bureau. When many people used the words Better Business Bureau it was a safe guard for many consumer interest and helped resolve their grievances against erring companies. When the adult reader looks at Better Business Bureau logo it states “ Start With Trust”. And it is the word trust that stays in many consumers mind. I really think that Better Business Bureau sometimes caters to the paying customers only. For example, if I have a company X I pay a membership fee to the BBB to be on their list and keep up my rating. Which means if someone like yourself goes to the BBB website and see how I handle my complaints and keep up my rating; it tells the customer
Businesses of today, are under no obligation or commitment to seek BBB accreditation, and some businesses are not accredited because they have not sought BBB accreditation, which may cause problems for the business in the future. To be accepted or accredited by the Better Business Bureau, a business must take the time to apply for accreditation and it is at this point that business meets accreditation standards. This will include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve many of the customer’s complaints. Better Business Bureau must pay a fee for accreditation review/ monitoring and also for the support of BBB services to the general public. The Ratings that Better Business Bureau provides is a key element to protect business
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has many stakeholders that are interested in the success of the organization. Essentially, the two main stakeholders are the business and the consumer. I will assume the role of the consumer and describe the steps the BBB could take to ensure protection and ethical misconduct is prevented from recurrence. According to Garrett and Toumanoff (2010), “the Better Business Bureau is the third-party complaint agency most commonly used by dissatisfied consumers who are unable to obtain redress from companies” (p. 3).
The Black Business Association (BBA) – This is a non-profit organization that is based in Los Angeles. They have a database of more than 85,000 African-American and minority owned businesses. This association has an alliance with more than
While the Better Business Bureau is set into place to set ethical guidelines and standards for companies to follow and customers to benefit from, this does not prevent unethical and dishonest actions from happening. Similar to the Red Cross Foundation, it appears that when organizations have many or several local chapters it makes it extremely difficult to monitor them through their everyday functions. I do not feel that the Better Business Bureau is effective in ensuring that companies behave ethically to protect the consumer, due to the fact that many organizations have memberships with the company. I do feel like this skews the ratings and leaves an excessive amount of room for error and unethical mismanagement. In my opinion, it seems rather
During those years before the create of PCAOB, there were some independent agency and private regulatory institution, such as SEC and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. A common problem of those institution was that the quality of audits was cheap. For
The Better Business Bureau has created their own accreditation system. According to the Ferrell, Fraedrich and Ferrell (2015) text, accreditation is defines any company membership that agrees to follow BBB business code of ethical practices. BBB ethical conduct code includes “ the standard of trust and efforts to resolve customer disputes and complaints” (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2015, pg480). BBB accreditation
The BBB is founded on the principles of self-regulation through conceptual guidelines of ethical behavior provide by the BBB itself. However, the case study paints a different picture of how ethical the BBB organization is as a whole. Taking a step back, I find the Better Business Bureau does, in theory, try to uphold standards at which each company participating can better serve their customers. Unfortunately, with the issues of unethical behavior presented throughout the case study, it is hard to determine if the BBB is a force for positive change or a force for selfish gain.
