Introduction:
In this lab, M&Ms and Smarties will be compared in five different ways: mass, shell solubility, volume, density, and nutrition facts. For each comparison 10 Smarties will be used and 10 M&Ms will be used. This is to ensure that the results are more accurate, as each piece of candy is not the same size, weight etc… A total of 50

Observe both candies until the candy coating is completely dissolved. When there is only the chocolate left in the water, record the time on to an Excel spreadsheet. Repeat these steps four more times to complete 10 trails for Smarties. When all of the trials are completed with Smarties, dump out all of the water and chocolate, rinse the beakers thoroughly and dry them with paper towel. Repeat the same steps used for Smarties using M&Ms. After all of the data has been collected and entered into the Excel spreadsheet; use the “Insert Function” feature to calculate the average time of solubility and the standard deviation. Nutrition Facts: Look on the back of the boxes of Smarties and M&Ms for the Nutrition Facts. Calculate the amount of sugar in a single piece of a Smartie. Divide the grams of sugar, as stated on the package, by the total grams of the package. Example: one package of Smarties contains approximately 30g (30 Smartie candies), and 22g of sugar. 22g of sugar divided by the total of 30g equals 0.73g of sugar for every 1g (1 Smartie). Repeat these steps using the following nutrition facts: fat, protein, calories and carbohydrates. Also repeat all of the steps above using M&Ms. Enter all data into an Excel spreadsheet and use the “Insert Function” feature to calculate the mean and standard deviation for the sugar, fat, protein, calories and carbohydrates in both Smarties and
The materials used during the experiment included three plastic cups, three gummy bears, masking tape, marker, balance, calculator, tray, one plastic spoon, a measurement tray, and a ruler. The three plastic cups were used to hold the tap water, salt water, and sugar water. The masking tape and marker were used to label each cup with the
We bought our Skittles from various stores. We then grouped the Skittles by flavor and documented how many of each flavor each individual bag contained. To be proficient we tested twenty of the regular sized Skittles packs and fifty-five of the fun sized packs. This gave us more than enough information to draw an accurate conclusion. To test our hypothesis, we found the P-value of each flavor for both size packs. Based off the P-values, we were able to determine if there is sufficient evidence to support our belief and Wrigley’s
7. Now perform two trials of test with one bag of frozen popcorn kernels and one bag of room temperature popcorn. It is important to record the data off of each trial separately.
The purpose of this experiment was to discover how many licks it took to get to the center of the tootsie pop. The key outcome was to know how many licks it take to get to the center of the tootsie pop, like the old commercial said. My lollipop was brown and chocolate flavored which varied from the other people's at my table. The materials you would need would be a tootsie pop and an app called tally counter. The way you would lick a Tootsie Pop would be to put it in your mouth and then take it out of your mouth. The first step is to unwrap the tootsie pop. Then you would lick the tootsie pop and repeat that step until you have completely reached the center of the
In this lab, different colored M&M’s were compared in order to find out if all M&M’s are created equally. Peanut M&M’s are peanuts that are dipped in milk chocolate and covered in a thin candy shell that comes in different colors. These M&M’s are produced and packaged at Mars, Inc. Each group was given 10 Peanut M&M’s of one specific color. The mass of each M&M was found using a scale and rounded to the nearest hundredth of a gram. Then the mass of the M&M’s was used to calculate different statistics such as the mean, median, mode, standard deviation from the mean, variance, standard error of the mean, and T-Tests.
This experiment was developed by researching about brands. The topic researched was, if people prefer name brands or generic brands and why. 40 children and 20 adults will be tested. This number of people will give reliable results and stable information. Granola bars were chosen
We were given an experiment where we had to pick a time range and a few different flavor of gum; sugar and sugar free gum. We had three flavors of gum we completed our experiment with, we had Chiclets, Five spearmint rain, and Trident Layers cherry lime. We chewed each gum for five minutes, two and a half minutes and one minute. The chewing of the gum helped us determine the percentage of sugar that was presented in the different pieces of gum we chewed. The purpose of this lab in to see if we could determine the percentage composition of sugar presented in our gum. Finding sugar in some items are difficult compared to others. Finding the sugar in multiple pieces of gum is pretty easy to do, all you need to do is find an equation the will
In this research paper, I am determining which gum will last the longest. It may come to your surprise that mint flavored gum lasts longer than fruit flavored gum. To do my project, I am taking five different gum flavors and chewing them to determine which flavor lasts. The types of gum I will be using are Juicy Fruit, Fruit Stripe, Spearmint, Extra Polar Ice, and Bubblicious. When I chew the gum, I hypothesize that the Spearmint gum will last longer.
The first step in conducting the experiment was deciding who was going to be tested. The test included using four classes each of a different grade level to perform the color/concentration test on. Each student was given a notecard to document their: Name, Age, Gender, Grade, Score, and Time. The first test was fireworkspop.com/colortest which was the simpler of the two test. As students take the test monitor the room and answer any questions anyone has getting to the website. After completing the first test the students will then their first score on the note card and proceed to take the second color test on cognitivefun.net/test/2. the second color test was slightly different and could go on forever. Instruct the students to go to trial twenty-one to get their results. The website gives the option to continue anonymously and the website calculates the score and gives the time it was completed in. The students wrote all their results before the note cards are taken up to be compiled into a graph. Let time go by before doing the experiment when the gum is included. The reason for waiting a while before doing the second portion of the test is so the subjects would not be expecting it, therefore they would not be prepared, making results more accurate. Splitting the class in half by numbers then again by gender, give each group one of two flavors of gum cinnamon
2. I’m going to be chewing each gum brand 200 times for 10 minutes, then I’m going to blow the bubble and I’m going to try by best into measuring the bubble size with ruler.
For this part first begin by tasting bitter substance of Ginseng candy, root beer candy, and Dark chocolate as the control candy for this experiment and then choose two more bitter substance like dark chocolate, coffee, sour patch kids, and mustard. After tasting these bitter substance, record your result based off the scale. As for the sweet substance repeat the same procedure by tasting sugar, milk chocolate and jolly rancher as your control sweet substance. After tasting these sweet substance, pick two more sweet like licorice, brown sugar, and skittles. Lastly record the sweet substance based off the
Then the cups with the potatoes are filled with different amounts of sucrose concentration; 0%, 4%, 8%, 12%, 16%, and 20%. The hypothesis of the lab was if the potatoes mass were to increase then the amount of sucrose sugar would increase as well. Materials: 6 plastic cups Potatoes Razor blade Marker Ruler Balance Cutting Board Rubber bands
Measure the mass of the 5 sugar cubes and record it in the data table.
M&M’s biggest competitor is Hershey’s brand like M&M candies. The competition is fierce among the chocolate industry. Hershey and Mars are rivals and want the opportunity to gain more of the market share. In 1954, Hershey-ettes were introduced to compete against the similar M&M’s. However, they were not successful and are generally only available for consumers around the Holiday season. By the millennium, Hershey extended the popular Hershey Kisses brand in creating the Kissables. Hershey intended for direct competition to M&M small candy coated round tablet of chocolate in multitude of colors. The candy factories started in standard size packs and by the 70’s moved into standard size candy boxes. In the current year and season, you will find M&M’s in candy canes to small snack sizes and inside ornamental objects. The chocolate world becomes difficult to present as it becomes difficult to come up with new ideas in the candy business. As more companies release products similar to the M&M’s, it will become increasingly difficult for Mars to continue to command the level of market share in the chocolate candy industry and the product has a potential to get lost in the supermarket aisle.
As stated in the description of the Conche activity: 1.400kg of semisweet chocolate contains 850kg of nibs, in other words, 1kg of semi sweet chocolate 850/1400=0,6071kg of nibs
