Birth Defects
No one is immune to birth defects, yet not everyone is equally susceptible.
Birth defects are not merely a medical problem. They have profound effects on the social and psychological well being of their family and friends.
In the normal course of fetal development, cells migrate to their appropriate destination so that organs and limbs form where they should. Usually, the genes perform flawlessly, but mistakes can and do occur. Some of the most common birth defects results from the interaction between one or two abnormal genes out of 100,000 that make up who we are. This is caused by the genes parents pass on or effected by drugs and alcohol upon the fetus of a new born child. Down's syndrome, the most common genetic

Their child could live a normal life for three to four years without any symptoms. Along with watching their child, they also have to face their new life. They now have to sent most of their time and money on the child, but how ? Injuries occurring during birth are denoted to as birth trauma or obstetrical injuries and they are associated with different etiological causes. The important causes of birth trauma are macrosomia, breech presentation, shoulder dystocia, and forceps-assisted deliveries [3]. Traumatizing maneuvers during the deliveries will result in these fractures in the assisted deliveries [4]. The trauma may occur due to use of forces, excessive traction or pulling, unintended pressure on soft organs such as eyes. Trauma to the limb usually occurs when the limb is pulled in cases of obstructed labor or shoulder dystocia (Head out, shoulder stuck). An Indian study on birth trauma revealed that the fractured clavicle was commonest bone fractured
Substance abuse during pregnancy can have a negative force on the health and wellness of not only the fetus, but that of the mother. The harmful effects of medications, alcohol and illegal drugs on an unborn child can be devastating and can have significant consequences to its use. Sometimes the effects can be faced and treated, and other times the outcome is a lifelong challenge. During the prenatal period, it is important that new mothers are informed of the different types of abuse, how they may affect the fetus, and the adverse conditions their child may be faced with before and after birth.

When we think of drug and alcohol abuse for the most part we focus on the older adult. We forget that teenagers and young adults partake in drug and alcohol abuse. These type of activities, when abused, tend to have long lasting repercussions. In the long run, underaged drinking interferes with children's development. Fetal alcohol syndrome is one of the top three known causes of birth defects, and is totally preventable.A number of pregnant women who take illegal drugs also use legal drugs, such as tobacco and alcohol. All these drugs cross the placenta and can affect the fetus prenatally, causing withdrawal symptoms at birth. Many of

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are nearly 120,000 babies are affected by birth defects each year ( Facts, 2015). Alcoholism can also be passed from a parent to their child, so Abraham’s problems with alcohol could be down to me him in this way – “These new findings suggest that if a parent uses drugs, he or she could pass on that DNA “damage” in the form of inherited epigenetic changes” (thefix, 2014)
Most parents note that they don’t care about the sex of the baby or what it looks like, they just want a happy, healthy child. But, as science grows into the realm of what seems to be science fiction, scientists are worried that studies are taking things too far in the field of designer babies. Advancements in designer babies in the twenty-first century will lead to catastrophic events on both a communal and global scale.
Many people disagree with the idea of genetically modifying babies but the pros are way more than the cons. The so called “designer babies” can prevent several genetic diseases such as Down syndrome, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, etc. This genetic diseases have been part of society since the beginning of time and until now there has been no way of preventing it other than aborting the baby when such disease is detected to spare it from the potential suffering. With “designer babies” all these diseases could possibly be completely eradicated which would give society a great benefit.
