An arc-shaped calligraphy hanging on the ceiling, ancient Chinese books opened on a big square of stage, two other calligraphies arranged on two sides of the walls of the stage, I was visiting the Book from the Sky by Xu Bing, one of the most well-known Chinese artists. Surrounding by the aesthetic collections, I was impacted by the deep strength from the work. Although I knew Chinese, I was shocked because I didn’t recognize any of the characters, regardless how similar they are to the actual ones, in the room. People used to say that the characters are invented to translate the meanings. However, after viewing the exhibition, I came up with a fresh concept that characters themselves could be the main resource of translating the information. The Book of the Sky was first created in 1987, but I had experienced centuries of Chinese culture from the work: the traditional composing order from right to left, from top to bottom; the …show more content…
He seemed to be a very gentle man from the outside looking at the speech, but as the lecture moved on, I could feel his passion and persistency both in work and personal life from his inside. How? Xu Bing was born in the 1950s in Beijing, China. From an educated family, Xu’s father was a professor and his mother was a librarian. When Xu was young, Xu’s mother locked him in the library on the weekdays because of work. Xu didn’t recognize sufficient Chinese characters at that time. Therefore, he read the characters by their forms, finding the patterns of expressions. Later on, cultural revolution, the dark period of Chinese history affected Xu’s family negatively. Characters became a weapon of the authority to manipulate the activities against certain group of people. Unfortunately, Xu was treated unfairly. This was the reason why he decided to use what he had studied from the character expressions to fight back the improper
Nobody fully understands what drives people to undertake a mission, but it often causes people to take many risks. For example, Farah Ahmedi climbed a mountain on a prosthetic leg with a sick mother just to reach freedom. Rikki-Tikki fought for his life to save his family. John Steinbeck eavesdropped on people's conversations just to get material for his book. These stories show different people who had each set a goal for themselves. Ahmedi and Rikki-Tikki fought for their lives to survive and save their loved ones. While Steinbeck traveled to great lengths to write his book. Their goals may be different but they all had set a goal and they all eventually accomplished their goal.
For this book analysis, I read the book A Piece of Cake by Cupcake brown. It is a memoir told by Cupcake about her life. She starts the book at age 11, when she was living a normal and pleasant life with her mother in San Diego. She was quite close to her along with her step father (who, at the time, she thought was her biological father), and her uncle. Then out of nowhere, she finds her mother dead in her room and her life is shaken into disaster. The court system had to turn both her and her brother over to her biological father whom she never met, instead of giving her to the man she was raised by. Her father then sent her to a foster home where she was raped and beaten constantly. When she
Once the novel comes to an end, we notice clearly the way Wang Lung changed. In the beginning of the novel we learned many ancient Chinese traditions by observing Wang Lung as a simple peasant, but as he becomes a wealthy landowner his life collapses. This rapid change of social class makes it difficult for anyone who intends to keep their traditional values until their death. This fantastic novel by Pearl S. Buck reminds us that we can never forget our traditional values, because if that happens your life will collapse just the way Wang Lung unfortunately
Epilepsy, it is difficult to deal with for both the epileptic and his family. Howard’s harrowing seizures in the novel Tinkers, written by Paul Harding, frighten those that witness its inconsistency. George witnesses this in his father Howard and is frightened, himself. At first, their relationship is normal but because of Howard’s seizures the relationship collapses and George runs away in his teenaged years. Flashbacks of both George and his father Howard are entries into their lives. Harding helps the readers understand the themes of life, death and relationship between the Crosby men and reaches the readers by capturing their attention with examples for each. To represent the difficult, then later, satisfying life of
In the “Autobiography of a Chinese immigrant” written in 1903 by Lee Chew, dialogues about his point of view
Farah Ahmedi was a girl who was desperate to escape her war-torn country of Afghanistan by crossing the border into Pakistan. Annie Johnson was a fierce woman who wanted to support her family by starting an intricate business that cooks meals for factory workers. The next mission missionary was Theodore Boone who was a 13 year old boy who wanted to prevent a bypass from being built through homes and farms, but not until his friend's farm was in the danger zone. However, all three wanted to help, whether it was them self or others.

Master Hsing Yun grew up in an impoverished, rural village with his family, but the influence of his maternal grandmother helped develop his compassionate and hardworking nature. While his family was out at work, he would do everything he could, including but not limited to tidying up the house, in the hopes of giving his parents a pleasant surprise when they got home. His hard work
He believes that the only reason that the harsh treatment towards the Chinese in America persisted was because of this. He explained how faithful a worker the Chinese were to the point where bosses would refuse to hire anyone other than them . There was an uncomfortable attitude that was well known at the time, that no mistress would want a white servant as an employee, they would only consider hiring from the Chinese nation . This caused chaos in the nation where everyone was in need of a way to support themselves. The Chinese, he feels, were being harassed for their good qualities, not for their
Do you want your child to have a higher risk of skin cancer or other terrible diseases? Do you want your child to never be able to play outside with all their friends? Nobody wants their child to have an unhealthy life or be sad because they have no friends to play with. Everyone wants to hope for their child to have a happy and healthy life. Humans not thinking about how the world’s climate change is dramatically changing does not make the climate not change. There are many scientist that have proven that climate change is happening and it has been happening for many, many years. Understanding what is happening
Reaching the “Im”possible Do people take missions to help others? To get away from danger? Or, to endure in daring circumstances? Well, in that case these three characters, undertake their missions to do all three. According to the book, “The Other Side of the Sky,” by Farah Ahmedi, Farah Ahmedi had a mission to advance over the border of Pakistan.
With the economic benefit of getting an education virtually eliminated by the Cultural Revolution, the main characters, Wang Fu and Beanpole, sought moral and ethical meaning in education. Despite the seemingly purposelessness of obtaining an education, Wang Fu views Beanpole’s dictionary as a “sacred object” (163) and, after failing to win the dictionary from a bet with Beanpole, “copie[s] the dictionary every day...after school” (168). His motivation for copying “‘fifty thousand characters, a hundred characters a day [for] five hundred days” (168) is revealed to stem from filial piety as well as his desire to stick up for his father, Wang Qitong. Despite Wang Qitong’s immense strength, which makes him capable of carrying hundreds of pounds of rice for an entire team, he is bullied and harassed by his teammates for being mute and declares that “‘[he] is not as strong as Wang Fu, because Wang Fu can read and write” (176). Because of his adoration for his father as being “ones of the strongest men in the world” and his knowledge that “people in the team bully [his father]”, Wang Fu wants to do the right thing and “study and learn how to speak for [his father]” (176). Beanpole, upon being warned by Chen to teach according to the “unified teaching materials” (165), justifies his actions by saying that “[w]hen [the children] return to their teams, they won't have
On Wednesday, May 9, 2018, I attended a presentation by NASA astronaut, Nicole Aunapu Mann, titled “The Sky is Not the Limit” at Grand Rapids Public Museum in the Meijer Theater at 7:30 pm. As Nicole was introduced to the audience by a colleague, he mentioned that Mann aspires to be the first woman on the moon. According to the NASA Diversity and Inclusion Assessment Survey, NASA’s employees are about 60% male and 40% female (WESTAT 17). Throughout this presentation I thought about how my identity and Nicole’s success story as women in this society relates to the identities of men and how they can succeed. Mann made it a priority for her presentation to discuss the many obstacles and hard work that comes with being an astronaut.
5,005 years after dragons took the planet from humans in an event called The Scorching, there has been a war waging for 12 years. Three daughters, Burn, Blister, and Blaze, are fighting over who gets the Sandwing throne. Their mother, Queen Oasis, died by a spear from a scavenger (Human). They rallied the other tribes on their sides. Blister allied with the Seawings, Burn allied with the Skywings and Mudwings, and Blaze allied with the Icewings and most of the Sandwings. The tribes that didn’t join in were the Nightwings, who are too advanced and noble, and the Rainwings, who are just too lazy. A prophecy was made foretelling of five dragonets, a Mudwing, Seawing, Sandwing, Nightwing, and a Skywing, who were going to choose the next queen.
Han Kang’s use of comparison between two closely related but very different characters demonstrates society’s definition of a dutiful wife. Unable to withstand the embarrassment of having a wife he is not proud of, he leaves her. Han Kang used the sense of pressure to depict not only the public opinion, but also the force that drives Mr. Cheong’s actions.
