Introduction
BP (British Petroleum) is one of the leading companies that are delivering energy products and services to the people around the world. In this report, we studied BP’s risk management plan for preventing oil spill. The main reason for choosing BP and its oil spill preparedness plan is that the oil companies have become increasingly vulnerable to unwillingly cause disasters and BP is one of them. An event that highlighted this vulnerability and subsequently drew attention to the need to investigate, is the BP oil spill in 2010 was one of the worst oil disasters that affected environment adversely. Issues such as these have been a serious concern for the oil companies around the world.
The aim of the investigation is to find

The effect of oil spill is usually calculated in terms of damage on the environment, aftermath on marine species, and effect on the tourism and fishery industries. The impact on human health is less known relatively. The financial costs associated with oil spills are also a factor. Arguably, it is a less serious consequence of an Oil Spill, however the financial costs have the potential to bankrupt an organization. BP suffered major financial loss as a result of the Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. They have paid up to $1.5 billion in an effort to settle various claims and compensation. (BP, n.d)
Recently, oil spill management has become a serious concern and subsequently, it has become a big issue as it takes a large, specifically trained team effort to solve the devastating problem. It also requires consistent efforts of the workforce. The Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico was perhaps another major contributing factor to highlighting the need for Oil Spill Management to be addressed. The director of the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Regulation and Enforcement, Michael Bromwich stated that this oil spill proved that oil and gas organizations were not prepared to deal with oil spills. (Merolli, 2010).
Oils spill management Practices
Literature suggest that the essential management practices to follow when responding to an Oil Spill is to dispose of oil spill debris with the aim of
The spectrums of oil spill issues are diverse and large. They range from environmental issue to economic, ecological, ethical, politics and policies. Among many other oil spills, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, occurred on April 20, 2010 was recorded as the greatest environmental disaster in our history (BP leak the world's worst accidental oil spill, 2010).
This presentation features the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which significantly affected the environment in and around Valdez, Alaska. In this connection, Group D will explore: the background information of Prince William Sound, the oil business in Valdez and the event of the oil spill. Next, the team defines the problems – that is, the effects of the spill – what damage did it cause. After, we will diagnose the issues – meaning that the group intends to pinpoint the root causes of the problems. The next step is to substantiate that the stated causes are linked to the issues; to accomplish the aforesaid, the response time and level of preparedness will be analysed. In order to mitigate similar incidents, the team explores action plans that have
An estimated amount of 206 gallons were let loose in the water. This oil spill has made the records of being one of the largest oil spills that has ever occurred. It happened when an oil well approximately a mile below the surface.blew out. In addition, this caused an explosion on the BP Horizon rig that killed 11 people. Experts made many attempts to stop the oil flow but it took time to reach success. However, every minute passing by is a very crucial one. Within as little as one day 2.5 million gallons were released into the water. The well was capped on July15, 2010. Meaning that the oil leaked for a grand total of 85 days. Resulting in 572 miles of the Gulf Shore being covered in oil. Not to mention the hundreds of animals found and taken into care due to the oil spill. Of course long term effects won’t be able to be further approached until time passes and experts are able to have obtained enough data throughout the years. However, experts have concluded that the damage from this oil spill will not be completely over with until years to come. Still today clumps of oil are being found coming from the shore. The oil is not the only thing to worry about however. Chemicals still remain in the environment and therefore can still affect the nature and can result in a chemical reaction which may be harmful. If parts of the oil are not able to reach oxygen it can just be a big toxic reservoir damaging the environment waiting to cause trouble. The only way to remove things like this is mechanically which only further destroys the habitat. Al in all it is a lose lose
The BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill tells the tragic story of what happened on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig back in April 2010. The rig, leased from another vendor, was digging a well on the Macondo slope in the Gulf when it exploded and fatally killed eleven employees and injured seventeen others (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). Not to mention, five million barrels of oil spilled into the sea causing an environmental issue that lasted more than ninety days.
The oil that has escaped the well has now spread throughout the ocean and some have floated to the top forming oil slicks on the surface which are being pushed by the wind and spreading rapidly damaging deep sea corals and other ecosystems. In order to contain the spill and begin to clean up, BP must quickly devise a plan of action to prevent further damage, destruction and loss of marine life. I have been obtained as a consultant by BP global to advise the CEO of BP during the oil spill disaster. This letter contains recommendations outlining the optimal leadership approach which will be most effective in the handling
It is well known that in 2010 a oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil rig Deepwater Horizon, owned by BP, exploded and sank and caused a continued oil leak that released amlost 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, the worst oil spill in U.S. history (Biello). In an address delivered inJune of 2010, President Obama called the oil spill “the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced” (Obama). Given the magnitude of the spill, and the media attention surrounding the issue, the entire topic became an emotional subject and strong opinions were formed regarding the nature of the spill and the correct way to proceed with containment and restoration. Of the many debates surrounding the issue, one which falls prey
On April 20, 2010, 11 men died, and dozens more were injured (Hoffman, 2010). A horrific disaster happened on the BP Deepwater Horizon drilling platform where an explosion on the rig killed 11 workers and led to over 4 million barrels of oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico, one of the largest oil spills in history (Hoffman, 2010). The oil company BP did many things wrong both before and after this devastating disaster. BPs self-entitled, hubris CEO and Corporate lead to a historical trajectory for the crew of Transocean's Deepwater Horizon. BP had given a pathetic response to the disaster trying to make It seem that it was not as bad as it was, all to ensure it still made more money and its stakeholders were not unsettled by it.
Until the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the worst oil spill had been the Exxon Valdez spill in 1979. The Exxon Valdez spill also took place in the Gulf of Mexico and dumped around 190 million less gallons of oil than the BP oil spill. The first cleanup barge did not reach the site for 14 hours and by then, nearly 1,100 miles of shoreline had been covered in oil. This was the first oil spill that was responsible for the eye-opening controversy over the safety of deepwater oil rigs. With that being said, the impact of the BP oil spill is still in existence today. The economy suffered tremendously in the Gulf areas. The oil spill on the fisheries industry could total $8.7 billion by 2020, including the un-employment of 22,000 jobs. The spill was also a huge blow to the ecosystem on a global scale. Endangered sea turtles that had usually migrated to the Gulf from Mexico, South America and West Africa died in the spill. Bottlenose dolphins living in Barataria Bay, Louisiana had a 63% lower reproductive season compared to other dolphin species following the oil spill. Finally, the deep-water coral reefs were almost wiped out over an area three times larger than Manhattan. The results of the oil spill are not always readily visible for us to clearly see, but that doesn’t mean that they still don’t exist to this day. Additionally, it has been seven years since the oil spill and until 2015, the future of the two BP employees in charge of the rig at the time of the spill was unknown. However, on 3 December 2015, US federal prosecutors dropped the manslaughter charges against Donald Vidrine and Robert Kaluza, who were the two rig supervisors on the day of Deepwater Horizon explosion. This ended the United States pursuit of criminal charges over the BP employees. But, “The two supervisors still have to face allegations
The BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill affected many small and large businesses in the coastal Gulf State regions, either directly or indirectly . The following industries showed a drop in activity level:
From Fig.26. it can be deduced that mostly boats are involved when it comes to oil spills (89 incidents, 54%). On the other hand the least amount of incidents involved events classified as “other” (9 incidents, 5%). However, when seeing the results of Fig.27. which takes into account the amount of oil spilled, boats are still in the lead (45%), closely followed by platforms (33%). When the number of incidents are taken into account platforms rank above “other” with 9%. This could be due to platform blowouts being rare events, however when they do occur, such as the Deepwater Horizon in 2010 they leak thousands of tonnes of oil into the ocean and it takes days for the workers
This article expresses its concern towards the aftermath of the BP Oil Spill in 2010, it’s totaled to have killed over a trillions of fish that were located in the gulf at that time. BP has been fine for such a heavy death of aquatic animals, sometime this month it was settled for BP to pay back $20 million dollars to the clean water act and mitigation. Because there was so many animals killed that were near the water there next move is making sure to reduce the risk to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
Overall, this spill has damaged the environment extensively (and according to some estimates, is still doing so) and affected the economy of the region, not to mention the future of BP.
The immediate oil spill killed thousands of marine animals and put numerous endangered species at risk. The effect of oil in the Gulf translated to serious economic implications in the geographic area affected by the spill, with industries like commercial fishing and tourism adversely affected the greatest. The National Academy of Sciences determined that commercial fishing production decreased by 20% in the wake of the spill. Tourism and rental revenue decreased by 25% along areas affected by the oil spill (Brennan). BP spent billions of dollars in cleanup costs to mitigate the damage done to wildlife species to restore fisheries in the area and close to $200 million promoting tourism in the Gulf
The environmental impact of an oil spill can last for decades. In 1969, an oil tanker ran aground in Buzzard's Bay Massachusetts, spilling 175,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the marine ecosystem. According to Dr. Judy McDowell and Christopher Reddy, two scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, it took about a decade for the normal inhabitants of the bay to return. What's more troubling, is that even 40 years later, soil samples still reek of diesel fuel (Guarino & Spotts, 2010, p. 2). This kind of damage can have an irreparable effect on the gulf states' economies. If it takes 10
In the past, we had learned from previous well best-known oil spill tankers accidents in the world which are:
