What is the significance of this claim?
In Mark 2:1-12, the story of healing of a paralytic man is told. Jesus heals this man in front of so-called non-believers in His power. In fact, when He poses the question that “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? (Mark 2:1-12) There are symbolic reflections of this rhetorical question. On the one hand, Jesus justifies that it is preferable to forgive the sins to heal someone directly. He conveys the message that being the Son of Man, he has the authority and ministry to ‘forgive’ the sins of that paralytic man, however, instead of approaching the healing or the removal of physical ailment, he deals with the matter impressively because he has to give a message to the non-believers in God’s power. He clearly mentions that men have the power to forgive because this ability is God’s virtue. Man is the live reflection of God and thus, he can perform the act of forgiveness and become great in life. The important aspect of this story is to show before the people that Jesus has been born with an authority to heal, cure or forgive people and thus, he is passing the message of God to the entire humankind.

In order to properly interpret the cost of discipleship addressed in Matthew 16:24-28, a look into the literary context of the passage is a must. All three synoptic Gospels contain this similar passage. The differences in the synoptics will be discussed briefly to identify the purpose of including this passage in each context. In terms of rhetoric, Matthew 5:21-48, like most of Matthew 5, is a set of rules. However, v. 21-48 go into much more details than the Beatitudes, and offer references to older texts. Many of the verses begin with the phrase “You have heard”. Let’s take verse 21 for example: “You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder’; and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment’” (Matthew 5:21). This is clearly a reference to Exodus, specifically Exodus 20:13. In fact, most of Matthew 5:21-48 makes reference to Exodus, as both share similar phrasing. The Gospels of the New Testament contain 39 different parables told by Jesus (Phillips 2004, 18-19) and no doubt he spoke many more during his ministry. Jesus’ choice to use parables to teach his people is one that has intrigued many people throughout history. The aim of this essay is to get to discover why he chose to use those parables, and also what we can learn from this teaching method when evangelising today.
