Greg Mortenson: A Leader Under Fire
1 I would definitely describe Greg Mortenson as an “Authentic Leader”. In our text authentic leadership is described as a type of leadership that can be nurtured, and develops over a lifetime, can be triggered by major life events, and that a leader’s behavior is grounded in strong ethics. The definition continues on to say that there are four authentic leadership components: Self-awareness, Internalized moral perspective, meaning knows the right thing to do and is driven by ethics and fairness, balanced processing, meaning they are fair minded and open to others, and they possess relational transparency, meaning they are honest and

However, immediately after his medical issues were dealt with, Greg chose to speak with the media and schedule a small number of public speaking engagements regardless of the advisement of his legal professionals for him not to do so. In doing this, Greg shows his true transparency and keeps those interested and those who may have doubted him in the loop. He shows true authentic leadership additionally by continuing to fight for his innocence while running still being involved the CAI.
3 Greg’s response to the allegations against him was characteristic of an authentic leader because he was sure to be transparent. He was open, honest and straightforward with himself and everyone else seeking answers. Additionally he showed internalized moral perspective by disregarding the advice of his legal advisors and chose to speak publicly about the situation, based on the fact that he was driven by his ethical beliefs and fairness, and felt that this was the right thing to do.
4 This investigation will definitely affect the authenticity of his leadership. This is due to the fact that people have the right to their own opinion and can decide whether or not they want to believe Greg, or those who are accusing him of said unethical behaviour. The good thing for for Greg is that he knows who he is and what he has and has not done and he will continue to be the authentic leader he has been. Like Greg’s colleague Andrew Marcus said,

Leadership is like a weighted coin, with a preference for the head of corruption. In fact, many of today’s greatest leaders seem to have long histories of controversy and questionable decisions. Take, for example, the PR company Bell Pottinger of the United Kingdom, which has recently been exposed for facilitating racism in South Africa, under direction from one of its clients (Cheryl). Exposure of this and other company controversies marked the beginning of the end for Bell Pottinger. Had the leaders of Bell Pottinger properly weighed company risks, prioritized their employees, and set a precedent of rules, corruption could have been prevented.

Tyson not appropriately presenting the award to his deserving adjuster on his team at the holiday party ceremony demonstrates this principle throughout the case study. If I was an employee at Premium, I would not trust Tyson as a supervisor given the fact that he cannot be honest with his team for the mistake he had made. As a team leader in any work environments, your team is supposed to be motivated by you and your work efforts. When they see how hard you are working as their leader and how honest you are with them, this would make them work even harder and trust you as their leader. Overall, the workspace becomes enjoyable and fewer gossips amongst them. Tyson knew what he has done, he then tries to earn their trust by talking to them one on one and as a
Airline distribution systems are undergoing a dramatic change in the way airline tickets are distributed due to the influence of different factors such as new technology, low-cost demands, and the changing needs of travelers. This paper will discuss those factors and discuss Global Distribution Systems (GDS) and what advantages airlines would gain from being in control of ticket distribution. Leaders need to look for bad things, not simply to prosecute wrongdoing but to acknowledge that when mistakes occur, it’s better to speak up than bury the truth (Baldoni, 2014). This is a powerful statement in today’s global market, and can be applied in both a personal and professional situation. This focus paper is intended to introduce General Motors’ cultural issues related to leadership transparency. While production and profitability goals are often viewed as a leader’s primary objectives, there is a long held view that leaders also have responsibility for ensuring standards of moral and ethical conduct (Resick et al, 2006).
