Roanoke Valley Governor’s School is known for its Project Forum. Students can work independently on creating a research study project that has a great potential for changing the world. Two subjects I am passionate about are improving the environment and finding the most efficient way to learn. My two ideas for Project Forum involve making a more friendly car for the environment and finding what type of note taking students learn the best from. Every day, millions of Americans turn on the engines of their cars and drive to school or work. What these people do not realize is that the vehicles they operate greatly pollute the planet. Automobiles play a major role in today's society. Almost every American owns at least one motorized transportation vehicle. Some say they make our lives better by reaching places faster than before. Others say they are a harmful to the environment. Have they made our society better or worse? They may be fast, but do we as humans want our environment to suffer because of time. Face it, cars pollute. And they release destructive chemicals into the air. Air pollution can threaten the health of many subjects in the environment including human beings.
Cars consist of being the number one way of travel throughout the United States. We rely on them to transport us to work, activities and necessary destinations. With this constant use of vehicles, it has had a negative impact on the environment. Although cars were invented almost a century ago to make life easier with getting around, car pollution has been our number one source of air pollution and has significantly impacted our environment due to how accessible they are. Arising problems such as air pollution, global warming, and health issues of americans, we have to come to the understanding that our environment is at risk if the amount of car pollution continues to increase.

Cars have always been a big deal in the United States. Ever since Henry Ford invented his Model T in 1908, the automobile industry in the United Sates has continued to grow (“Henry Ford Changes the World,” 2005). While Ford was not the original inventor the automobile, he created the first automobiles that were affordable, easy to drive and maintain, which made it possible for everyday people to own cars. Ford’s assembly line building technique became the benchmark for all the big auto manufactures of that day (“Henry Ford Changes the World,” 2005). Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler soon became known as the “Big Three” American automobile companies (Foner & Garraty, 1991). While the automobile industry has immensely grown and changed from the early 1900’s to now, it continues to be at the forefront of industries creating environmental concerns worldwide. Issues currently being faced by the American Auto Industry include: having to handle tough global competition by foreign automakers, figuring out how to incorporate new technology to power vehicles (such as electric or ethanol run cars), and having to face new higher government and consumer quality and environmental standards.
In this lab, we conducted basic measurements and calculations to estimate the area impact of vehicles used by Camden County College as well as the contribution of vehicle-based pollution from the county, state, and nation. To determine this, the class needed to estimate the annual average emission produced by an average car at the college. With this data, we were able to determine the amount of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons that are released into the atmosphere every day. In my original hypothesis, I assumed that the numbers we were going to find would be extremely high, however, I was still surprised by the actual amounts we deduced. However, I did hypothesize that older cars who receive lower amounts of miles per gallon would produce the larger amounts of emissions, which happened to be the case in this instance.

The invention of the automobile in the early 20th century has had an adverse affect on our environment. Our society has used technology in order to advance the automobile to make it better and more efficient. The automobile industry knows what sells and they take advantage of that. With this growing technology to advance automobiles also comes flaws. The biggest and most obvious flaw is pollution. Because of pollution, we find ourselves asking the question of whether this technology has helped our society more than it has hurt it.
All over the world people are noticing that the impact of car is greater than we first anticipated. The carbon emitted from the manufacturing of the mass produced vehicle industry is slowly but surely ruining our ozone. Since the beginning of the car era to now they have been one of the top things depleting our ozone, they have done most of the damage which happens to be 80% of the total destruction. So ask yourself, What’s My TireTrak? This growing problem is happening everywhere, where cars are. The scariest of this entire problem is that we can’t get the ozone that we have lost, back! So if we want to start to help out the environment, we’d better start now.

Automobiles have become such an integral part of living in a modern society. Many places in the first world are inexplicably fortunate enough to have such incredible transportation technology at their finger tips. While this technology is a dream, the gasoline powered cars we use today attribute to about 25% of the worlds carbon emissions (Agassi, Shai Agassi: A new ecosystem for electric cars). This is a giant concern, but the car industry may find themselves a little more concerned with the depleting oil that is burned away daily by drivers. It’s unavoidable, there needs to be a change made sooner than later, and hybrid isn’t solving our problems fast enough. The best alternate choice seems to be a full conversion to electric cars. These cars replace gasoline engines with an electric one, running on battery power. The battery of these cars runs current through the motor to the wheels, operating like a light and a light switch where the increase in speed is similar to having a dimmer on that light (Brain, How Electric Cars Work 1). This technology removes the harmful carbon emission, making it a sustainable solution to our current problems, but it still struggles to be implemented as it has since it was first created.

Conservation of energy and a preservation of the environment are popular and active topics in today’s political world. “According to Frost and Sullivan Transportation, fuel economy has risen to among the top three important factors for current vehicle purchase” (Brooke). Seeing a skyrocket in gasoline prices and an increase in vehicular pollution shows the need for change in how vehicles are designed. It is undeniably time to evolve beyond the status quo of the current gasoline driven automobiles that continue to contaminate the atmosphere. The overlaying issue is that these machines consistently pollute the world while running on a natural resource that won’t last the human race for long. Neglect for the automobile-induced pollution has spread like wildfire, and has been proven to be a key player in the cause of pollution. Change is needed, and the rise of hybrid vehicles leads the way to that change, boasting cost-effectiveness and hardware that is designed to protect the environment whereas the petrol only based vehicle would pollute and destroy it.
