1. Executive summary
The Chunnel Tunnel project was initiated to connect via a tunnel France and England. It was among the biggest privately funded infrastructure projects ever. Fifty kilometres long, the tunnel extended under the English Channel from France to England. It required the collaboration of two very different government entities, with very different policies. It can be a difficult task if the key stakeholders have not been informed earlier in the life cycle.
It is clear to see that throughout the project the tasks and progress were monitored very closely. The project is heavily dependent on the resources provided by its shareholders and in turn they rely on regular updates to reassure them on their investment. In the construction and building industry the methods and application of project management tools are very reliable and well tested. Therefore, it could benefit the project if the it was managed with detailed and defined practises and also follow standards set and agreed upon on a international level.

Since the early stages, the project was inundated with concerns and issues with the project scope. From the perspective of project management, the initial scope was not defined well enough. Details of the design were over looked and aspects such as the details of the air conditioning ended up increasing the original scope by $200 million. This supposedly led a prosperous project to an uncertain economic ordeal. Initial estimates of the project had been $5.5 billion and by the time of its actual completion it been delayed by a year and increased to $15

The concept of project scope may be one of the most ample in project management. It involves objectives, limits and intentions. Every requirement in a project as well as its characteristics must be dealt with when planning the scope. Even though it 's reasonable to say that every project is unique, the causes for which it fails are generally the same. And if you already know what these causes are, you can minimize the likelihood of problems being repeated and thus increase the chance of success.
The textbook seems to focus more on the negative aspects or all that went wrong with the project whereas the video, although speaking extensively on the many challenges faced, still paint the project as an overall success. I’m not sure if was because I watched the film, with all the visuals, before reading the text, nevertheless, I found myself seeing the project more optimistically even with the new learned facts from the text. Our text raised the question of whether the original cost estimates given were in good faith or “turned” to meet political realities, and I believe the answer to be the latter. It is extremely hard to comprehend how anyone, much less the government, believed a project of this magnitude and enormous would come close to 2 billion and take just a couple years to complete. I mean even I thought it would take at least a decade to complete. Project Managers have been known to deliberately understate the cost involved to secure a bid however, this seems overly extreme besides I think officials tried to keep the factual cost estimates under wraps for the sake of this very much needed new transportation system.
