8 March 2015 Homelessness
Homelessness has always been a significant problem in the U.S. Each day, the number of unfortunate people that find themselves on the streets increases. Whether they were born into it, or simply lost their jobs, homelessness will always be an issue in our world. You may be wondering why this pertains to you. You get to come home, enjoy a warm meal, take a hot shower, and climb into bed but homelessness is not an isolated problem, it’s everyone’s problem believe it or not. Being a little more educated about the causes of homelessness, the views of homeless people, and the measures that are being taken to lessen its numbers are the baby steps to propelling us towards a society

John Handler adds, “ Home is the human point of ultimate return.” The main causes of homelessness are low incomes, lack of affordable housing, substance abuse, and/or lack of affordable medical care. Federal minimum wage laws allow employers to decrease the amount of money they pay employees that receive tips. These earnings are, in most cases, not enough to make ends meet. Over the past five years, wages for the lowest income workers have “not kept pace with the increase of living costs, nor the increase in salaries of those in the highest income brackets” John Handler states. Health care and insurance costs have risen substantially in the past few years, the current minimum wage being “27% less than it was in 1968”. This leaves the lowest income …show more content…
Too many people avert their eyes when they pass by, pretending that they are not there. They do not take in consideration the fact that vagrants are people too, with a heart, emotions, and feelings. Take former panhandler Tony Hodges for example. He stated in article for The Greensboro Voice that trust is a major issue between the “homeless and the housed” and “many people look down on us like we are the scum of the world”. Hodges asserted “the only real way for someone to know what homelessness is like is by being homeless. Despite there being governmental programs and resources, some people experiencing homelessness refuse that help because they do not trust others. Another challenge is that some have mental illnesses that have developed as a result of their situation. Sometimes, these mental illnesses have been a struggle for the person for his or her whole life and become worse because of their homeless condition.” Having this inside look on how the homeless feel is key. It reminds us that, at the end of the day, we are all
Homelessness is an issue in American society today that affects anywhere from 800,000 to 3.5 million people. There are a substantial amount of people that are without shelter, food, or employment, and there are numerous other people affected by poverty and homelessness. People living in nearly every city in the United States are affected by homelessness due to the large amounts of homeless individuals living on the streets and begging for money, food, and other necessities. The issue of homelessness has been a constant problem since the conquering of the New World, and soup kitchens and homeless shelters have not been able to fully end homelessness. Especially today, with a lack of affordable housing and high unemployment rates, homelessness is prevalent.
Homelessness in America could be considered a major issue considering that over five hundred thousand people are currently homeless in America. We see it everywhere yet it is not talked about. In the interest of finding a solution to homelessness in America we must learn the history behind it, take a look at all of it's contributors, and lastly see what exactly are we doing in order to avoid it as much as possible. Something must to be done to aid the situation before it spirals out of control.
“One diverse population that has continued to increase over the quarter of a century is composed of people who are homeless” (Baggerly & Zalaquett, 2006, p.155). Homelessness has become a growing problem in society because more and more people are finding themselves to be homeless and not knowing where to turn. Many people do not
In the United States the homeless population continues to grow rapidly. Homelessness has been a public health issue for many decades. Often times these individuals feel as though society has turned a blind eye to them. This at risk population is seen by society as lazy or chose to live a life on the streets, but if one would examine this population closely would see that there is more to this at risk population than what society has labeled them as. The forces, which affect homelessness, are multifaceted. Social forces such as family breakdown, addictions, and mental illnesses are in combined with structural forces such as lack of low-cost housing, insufficient health services, and poor economic conditions. Many would
Homelessness is defined as the situation of an individual or family without stable, permanent, appropriate housing, or the immediate prospect, means, and ability of acquiring it. It is the result of systemic or societal barriers, a lack of affordable and appropriate housing, the individual/household’s financial, mental, cognitive, behavioral or physical challenges, and/or racism and discrimination. Most people do not choose to be homeless, and the experience is generally negative, unpleasant, stressful and distressing6. Homelessness is a problem that affects every Canadian town or city, and is one that is dealt with using a variety of different methods.
A place of safety and security is something that many of us take for granted, until we are confronted in our own neighborhood by someone holding up a sign pleading for help. Homelessness is a problem that has been afflicting hundreds of thousands of people around the world for ages. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, on a single night in 2016, 549,928 people were experiencing homelessness in the United States. That means that there were at least 500,000 individuals suffering without a place to lay their heads at night. In this report I will be discussing the causes of homelessness, who is affected, how it affects people, and homeless mistreatment.
Homelessness in America has existed for some time now, but has grown and changed majorly over the years since the 1980’s. According to Mary Hombs, “the prevailing stereotype of a homeless person was that of a middle-aged white urban male alcoholic” (6). But now there is no stereotype because homelessness could happen to anyone at any moment, so that is why it important to be aware. Millions of people in this country do not have a place to live including whole families, children, veterans, and even the mentally ill. Going day after day without food or shelter. Throughout this paper the main focus will be answering the questions: What is homelessness?; What are the main causes of homelessness?: Who is the homeless?; and How do the people of this country assist the homeless?
Seeing homelessness develop is a process that the older generation can say they have been apart of. The young generation, on the other hand, cannot say they have seen the development of homelessness. People who are thirty years old or younger have grown up believing that homelessness was always part of the landscape. The younger generation has come to believe that there have always been homeless people sitting on park benches. When an individual is asked what they see most in a large city like Chicago or New York, ‘homeless people’ is a common response. According to the United States Census Bureau, 320.8 million individuals currently live in the United States of America. Imagine the proportion of individuals that do not own a car or even a house to live in. The National Law Center on Homelessness and poverty did studied to conclude that in America more than 3.5 million people experience homelessness each year. Those concerned with the issue of homelessness are curious as to what events had to have happened that lead to the individuals living on the streets. The reasons are different for each and every person. Some of the more major issues that contribute to this are lack of affordable housing, declining welfare assistance, and most importantly, mental illness. Resolving the issue of homelessness is very possible with new ways of housing and treatment for the mentally ill. The relation between the homeless and the mental illness has risen, and the United States as a whole
Homelessness is a serious societal problem affecting our communities. Katel of Housing the Homeless says “about 1.5 million Americans use a shelter in a given year- and advocates for the homeless say that figure badly understates the problem.” Yet, society looks down at these people, not doing anything to help them. They are judged, criticized, and bombarded by false assumptions everywhere they go. I have heard people say “they are like that because they chose to” or “they are lazy and don't want to work.” This is not true in most cases. The reality is life can go wrong at any moment for anyone. For some people there is no one there to help them and their only option is living on the streets or a shelter.
People drive or walk past a homeless person almost every day without thinking twice about the plight of that person or they may even unconsciously turn their heads the other way in disgust. Homelessness simply put, means without a home - therefore homelessness is an equal opportunity state that can happen to anyone. Even though we have seen some economic prosperity over the years, statistics show that the number of homeless remains very high. With this in mind, communities need to come together at the state, city, and individual level to come up with solutions to mitigate the spreading of this problem.
Homelessness is a major problem in the United States of America. Homelessness is a state in which people do not have a place to stay in for a period of time and are always spending their time on the streets. From a teenage eluding a bad environment, to an elderly citizen on a fine tuned income that is not enough to cover a rent or the tax increase, to a child whose parents lost their job out of nowhere and became unemployed are what leads to homelessness (“Homelessness Resource Center” 1).
Homelessness has become a serious problem in today’s society. Despite the organizations that help multitudes of homeless people, homelessness is continually increasing. In recent years, America’s culture has been changing due to economic, political, and social issues. These issues have caused a lot of stress on America resulting in abject poverty in several cities. Poverty is not nationwide, but if dealt with lightly, the affects can be catastrophic. Homelessness is increasing more than ever, and research proves that changing culture contributes to rising amount of homelessness.
Over a half million people in America are currently living without homes, sleeping instead in crowded shelters, parks, bus stations, and other places not meant for human accommodation. Many who are unfamiliar with this stigmatizing situation presume there is a simple solution to this social crisis. “Get a job!” they say, attributing the homeless’ wretched circumstance to laziness. However, overcoming homelessness is not that simple. Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of vagrants do work or try to find work, but due to factors in the economy beyond their control, they find homelessness nearly insurmountable. [general economic aspects?] For many in America, homelessness is nigh inescapable due to economic impediments such as the availability/affordability of housing, the discrepancy between the cost of living and low income, and the difficulty in securing a stable income.
Homelessness can be caused by many different factors. It can be caused by tragic life occurrences such as the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, divorce and family issues, or violence. Other impairments creating a huge portion of homelessness are depression, mental illness, addiction disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and physical disabilities. Many of these issues can push people to living on the streets, in parks or under bridges.
Homelessness is a big part of our society. We see them every day. We see them sitting by the road on a cardboard box and holding a sign asking for help. According to the article “Top Causes of Homelessness in America,” by Home aid stated that 3.5 million Americans are homeless in America. There are things can cause people to become homeless, such as losing a job or getting fired, getting a divorce, natural disaster, and loss of a loved one. Other reasons why a person decides to remain homeless. It could be doing drug or drinking alcohol can both lead to a result of violence or mental illness. The three most common causes of homelessness are the natural disaster, divorce and losing a job.
