Causes of the Civil War Although some historians feel that the Civil War was a result of political blunders and that the issue of slavery did not cause the conflict, they ignore the two main causes. The expansion of slavery, and its entrance into the political scene. The North didn't care about slavery as long as it stayed in the South. South Carolina seceded, because Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, was voted into office. The Republican party threatened the South's expansion and so Southerners felt that they had no other choice. The United States was divided into three groups by the time the Civil War began: those who believed in the complete abolition of slavery, those who were against the expansion of slavery, and those …show more content…
If the South had been more divided they might have been more willing to compromise. The central cause of conflict between North and South was slavery, but it was only in it's expansion that it became a reason for war. The entrance of slavery into politics made it into a public issue, and once the issue became public the conflict had to be solved. From the first years in American history, we have drank. Records of the first Europeans on America’s mainland tell about the colonists’ "great thirste" after their original supplies of European-made alcohol ran out. The settlers made their own wine. Eve Alcohol was imported from all over the world. Innovative colonists made alcohol from almost anything. One song from the 1700’s went like this: If barley be wanting to make into malt, We must be content and think it no fault, For we can make liquor to sweeten our lips Of pumpkins, and parsnips, and walnut-tree chips. Not everyone approved of drinking. Many Protestant groups, including the Methodists and Lutherans had strong antidrink traditions based upon religious teachings. Prohibition was first tried in America to protect colonial settlers from the attacks of I The earliest reformers called for moderation, not total abstinence, but as their movement gained strength it demanded a complete prohibition of all beer, wine, and liquor. The first temperance legislation was passed in Massachusetts in 1838. Called the Many
Many factors led to the occurrence of the American Civil War. The key issues were slavery, different political ideologies, right of the people, and economic reasons. However, the key reasons that lead to the Civil War was slavery. Slavery is touted as the main cause of the conflict between the states in the northern part and those in the south. To date, slavery is still considered the worst human tragedy to have occurred in the United States. Abraham Lincoln himself pointed out that slavery was the root cause of the Civil War because of increase in tension within the country.
Slavery, some historians argue, was the main cause for the Civil War. It was one of the biggest issues in the 1800 's. Slavery generated conflict between the Southern and Northern states. The South was heavily reliant on slavery. They had a lot of plantations, which
The primary cause of civil war is the sectionalism of slavery whether it is legal or illegal and the two sides which the North and South strongly believe in their beliefs and their way of getting money. The North was booming with new inventions and they were steering away from the slavery lifestyle, meanwhile in the south slavery is what southern's value especially since new technology didn’t work in the southern states due cause of weather. Some other events that heavily contribute to the war was the missouri compromise causes a lot of separation with the two sides splitting them up. Evenmore with the election of 1860 definitely was one of the breaking point as well not to long after the election a book later was written called uncle tom’s
Southern political leaders became convinced that the institution of slavery was under attack by the North, especially by Lincoln and the Republican party. The southern states did not want Abraham Lincoln to win the Election of 1860. Lincoln was a Republican and the Republican Party opposed slavery. Lincoln never said he wanted to end slavery in the South and did not believe anyone had the right to do so, yet he did not want to see slavery spread to other parts of the United States. Unless slavery could spread, the slave population in the South would become too large. In time, blacks and whites would battle for control where one or the other would be destroyed. This idea of leaving the Union split North and South just as much as slavery. Southerners claimed they had the right to secede peacefully. Northerners disagreed saying that secession was treason and that it would lead to civil war. Debates grew over slavery between the North and South but a compromise wad necessary for advancing.
Before the war the south had around one million slaves, to do their chores for them. The south was dependent on slaves so, they were not about to give up so easily when Lincoln got elected. That is when they seceded, southerners could not take the risk of Lincoln taking away their slaves. There was only one cause of the civil war and that was slavery, because of the south's “need” for slavery.. All of the events leading up to the civil war were also causes of the war occurring. But all of those events happened because of slavery. Without the Southerners and the Northerners different views on slavery there would not have been a war at all.
The Confederate States of America consisted of eleven Southern states that seceded from the Union in 1860 and 1861 to establish a new nation. In 1860, seven states of the Deep South—Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi South Carolina and Texas seceded because they thought the election of Abraham Lincoln would threaten their livelihood by abolishing slavery. Later, four states of the Upper South—Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia joined them. The CSA, led by Jefferson Davis, quite simply wanted to keep the Deep South and the Upper South enslaved. The unspoken goal of secession was to ensure that ‘all men were not created equal’. This secession led to the American Civil War—a war fought between Northern and Southern states. The southern states wanted to protect the institution of slavery. Northern states, led by Abraham Lincoln, believed that slavery was immoral and wrong.
One of the reasons that triggered the Civil War was the difference in the view of slavery. The South known as the “slave states” wanted slavery because they needed it in order to make revenue out of their agricultural economy and produce raw goods and have the slaves work. As a result, the wealthy owners of the farm relied on foreign exports a lot. The North known as the “free states” opposed slavery because they did not need slavery as much as the South they had an industrial economy and made raw goods into products. Since the north had such a big industrial economy there was a lot of immigration towards the north because of all the job opportunities. Therefore, both sides had different perspectives on slavery and caused a disagreement.
There are many explanations that have been going around for the causes of the Civil War. The most common reason was due to slavery’s moral issues, the Dred Scott case, and Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. Although there are many reasons many still are sticking with this causes.
One of the main causes of the American Civil War was conflict over slavery. There were huge arguments about the emancipation of slaves, and a large division between the North and South about the importance of slavery. In her book What This Cruel War Was Over: Soldiers, Slavery and the Civil War, historian
The North was torn between giving the slaves their rightful choices, or keeping the economy balanced. It was a matter of moral standards. The South wanted to break away from the union, while the North still wanted the two territories to stick together. This conflict was the main cause of the Civil War. The South argued about their state’s rights.
The main causes of the Civil War were the issue of slavery and disagreements about states’ rights. Leaders in the southern states thought the subject of keeping slaves should be up to the individual states. The majority of people in the south were passionate about keeping a small government, and therefore felt it should be up to them to decide whether they would allow slavery or not.
Leading up to the Civil War, there were many dividing factors between the North and South. These included the issues involving the role of the federal government, the preservation of the Union, and states’ rights. Although all of these issues were important factors, the underlying issue of the morality of slavery was the driving force. Slavery was a hotly debated topic in America dating back well before the nation’s founding. The main cause of the American Civil War was the division of opinions between the North and the South on the topic of the morality of slavery.
Another cause to the civil war was the differences between the Northern and Southern regions. The southerners life was based on farming, large plantations and slavery. While the Northern people had a city like lifestyle with industries in cotton and wood. They believed in a life with no slaves and the southerners believed in a system with slaves because of their importance to their large plantations and because they were cheap labor. Now just about everything they do has to have a compromise in order for it to be settled because of the different backgrounds they had in life and because of their political beliefs on government.
Ever since it was the election of 1860, Lincoln became President, and his goal was to keep slavery out of the North. New nation from the seven slave states were made and that’s because they didn't want to listen to the goal Lincoln made. Lincoln made this goal to have equal rights for the next few years. (“Civil War Facts”) Another point that caused the Civil War was sectionalism. Sectionalism was known for the North and South to be divided into two parts from one territory. One of the reasons that the North and South were divided was because they were convinced for each justice when war began. Another cause that’s part
