Madeline Schreier Organization Paper 3/6/17 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more commonly known as the CDC, is a major governmental department serving the country in healthcare. Per their official mission statement, The CDC “serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and health education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Most citizens may think of the CDC in situations not unlike the Ebola or Zika outbreaks, or even in the outlandish ideas of a virus bringing people back from the dead. These Centers across the United States survey disease outbreak, …show more content…
But, they also consult with other countries and may offer assistance to these other nations as well. Beyond just controlling the outbreak of infectious disease, the CDC is detecting emerging threats to public health, taking on major health issues causing death for Americans, utilizing research for disease prevention, and using public education to promote general welfare and health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a relatively young department that has grown entwined with American culture. In the modern age, the focus has turned to disease control, just as natural disasters. With today’s highly concentrated populations the control of infectious disease is paramount. Because of the CDC, the public is not only aware of the Zika virus situation, they may also be more …show more content…
Of course, it is working in accordance with HHS, which it falls under, as well as the other operating departments concurrent with the CDC. As previously mentioned, the centers work with state and local governments as well, as they do not simply incorporate their own CDC branch. So, the centers are working with all levels of government, even some international relations. However, these relationships federal, state, local, and even international governments, are more of an advisory stance, setting forth frameworks and aid for any. As for other intergovernmental relations, the CDC falls into some more cooperative works with other departments and agencies. When it comes to research, the CDC may be working with any sort of government agency. There are always things that go hand in hand, consider emergency response in relation with the CDC, they may be coordinating with FEMA, an agency under the Department of Homeland Security. Just consider something like bioterrorism, basically the use of disease for terroristic again (anthrax), such an occurrence would involve both agencies. Of course, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), would be working with the CDC in policy implementation and consultation. Another example is the CDC and the EPA, for instance, they worked together on mosquito spraying for reduction in the spread of the Zika effects ("U.S. Centers for Disease…”). The amount of
Learning many things from Ebola outbreak gave the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) a great inside on how to respond to the Zika virus in regards to educating the public, provide adequate staffing personnel and collaboration with other cities and countries. The CDC websites states that they are a nation’s health protection agency which works 24/7 to protect all Americans from any of threats, health and safety whether they are domestic or foreign. Its main function is to protect the public well-being and provide the most current accurate information in regards to
The national system responsible for the health and welfare of United States citizens is the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “HHS is charged with regulating health care and overseeing the health status of Americans” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008, p. 56). A newer division, Office of Public Health Preparedness was added after September 11, 2011 to assist with preparing for bioterrorism at the state and national level (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). The U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) has eight agencies and is
The aftermath of this outbreak helped the world learn how to respond to deadly illnesses in an effective manor as well as moved the cause of science forward by striving to find a way to treat this disease. The event lead to the organizations responsible for controlling these outbreaks to grow and develop more proficient ways to battle the flu as well as many other sicknesses. Today, “international organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) provide leadership in global health matters. The WHO’s preparedness plans against influenza pandemics include six levels of pandemic alert, which determine the recommended actions it should take in conjunction with the international community, governments, and industry.6” This expansion has saved millions of lives as now flu vaccines are usually available in most communities as well as treatments for nearly every ailment known. Without these organizations influence the Swine Flu epidemic could have been much more devastating along with the hundreds of other disease that could have wiped out entire populations without the intervention of these groups. The government was also changed by this as they had
1. There are four key audiences that need to be communicated to about the actions of The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The first audience would be women who are pregnant or women who are thinking about becoming pregnant. This would be the most important key audience in my opinion since the Zika Virus greatly affects women who are pregnant and can cause negative impacts for their babies. Women who are thinking about becoming pregnant are also important because even though it currently doesn’t affect them or their baby it could in the future and they need to take precautions with where to travel and how to protect themselves. The second key audience would be couples or young adults of childbearing age planning to travel to affected areas. This audience needs to be
The underlying objective of the Center for Disease Control should be to furnish the gathering of people with
When people think of the word ‘epidemic’, they generally imagine a widespread disease that threatens humanity as a whole. While most of the hysteria associated with pandemics stem purely from fiction, it can be understandable why people always fear the worst. That is why when an outbreak of the Zika Virus was reported in the United States, an overall feeling of malaise set in. As of September 21, 2016, a total of 3,358 cases of the Zika Virus have been reported (“Center for Disease Control and Prevention”). Though the numbers are alarming, there is no need for a national quarantine or emergency evacuation. In reality, the Zika Virus is not as intimidating as society puts it out to be. The panic and confusion associated with
When researching anything pertaining to disease, environmental health, local issues due to natural disaster or pandemics, and precautions to take to protect yourself from diseases and/ or disaster, etc. the CDC is a great source to gain any of this information. The CDC's goal is to protect and inform people with the most up to date information and is used by many, including, Doctors offices, hospitals, and educators. Taking into consideration this is a credible, government owned site, and is scientifically backed up, by well educated Doctors and Scientists I will always use the
Everyday, people all over the world are suffering from life threatening diseases such as polio, measles, and chicken pox. Diseases may not seem like that big of a problem to us, but that is only because we rarely have to deal with such problems due to our blessing of herd immunity inside American borders. If you are a citizen of the United States, you probably know about the safety and protection we are provided by living here. Consequently, you may attribute our security to government and troops, the protection of our health provided to United States’ citizens is the backbone of what continues to grow our population, better our country, and prevent epidemic outbreaks. Scientists and doctors play a
The growing concern of the Zika outbreak that originated back in 1947 Uganda in monkeys and later crossed over to humans in 1952 has now reached several countries. These outbreaks are occurring in Brazil and reportedly more than 7,000 people have been infected from mosquito bites. On February 1, 2016 the World Health Organization declared the Zika a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. To combat the issue Louisville activated the “Zika Response Action Plan, which provides guidelines for preparation and response to the virus in the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) jurisdiction” (ZIKA Response plan, 2016). The plan being used by Louisville demonstrates the prevention and mitigation being executed
A Center for Disease Control Director (CDC) role is well defined. Thus far, the director of the CDC primary purpose is to nurture the public through an epidemic or a pandemic. It is essential for the director of the CDC to contribute to communication as much as possible. Furthermore, resources are vital when health threats are imminent and demonstrator threats. An essential point as a director of the CDC is national and state security. Nevertheless, a CDC director uses innovative security to control and confront all possible threats or attacks.
One way that national and international agencies are involved with state and local health departments is the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS), which is a nationwide collaboration that allows local, state, territorial, federal, and international health agencies to share information about disease-related issues. Health departments work with healthcare providers, hospitals, laboratories, and others to increase monitoring, control, and prevention of diseases which allows for collection, analysis, and sharing of data and works to increase awareness of potential outbreaks. By interacting with one another, public health agencies are able to provide up-to-date information for their constituents and can even have
The CDC has been a promoter of global health for almost 6 decades. CDC protects Americans through their constant interactions with other countries. CDC understands that since we are now more globally dependable and connected, “a disease threat anywhere is a disease threat everywhere”. (CDC.gov) Because of the CDC ‘s programs in third world countries, the United States builds good relationships with other countries as well as monitor and control diseases. CDC protects and saves lives around the world.
Doctors see the importance of vaccines on a local scale, as they protect children and communities, but researchers and scientists see the importance of vaccines on a global scale. Over the years, the world has seen many close calls with viruses such as Ebola, Swine Flu, and Zika, each proving to be slightly more difficult to address yet preparation has not changed to accommodate for the adapting viruses. Researchers and scientists are educated to be a step ahead of viruses that threaten society and the implementation of the CEPI would allow science the means to commence the process of eradicating viruses. Already the CEPI has funding to research three high profile viruses however the more money the CEPI can allocate, the bigger its targets can become. Researchers hope to eventually take on viruses such as HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, three of the most widespread and adaptive viruses in the world today. With most viruses much easier to address when compared to the abilities of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, researchers hope funding comes quickly. Sciences ability to protect the world from pandemics depends wholly on the success of the CEPI, nowhere else is there funding dedicated solely to the research of viruses and their possible vaccinations. For researchers and scientists, the success of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparation Innovations is crucial for the future of a world threatened by adaptive viruses that currently have no
The EOC is serving as CDC’s command center for monitoring and coordinating the emergency response to Zika
This paper defines and explains the six core functions of epidemiology: Public health surveillance, field investigation, analytic studies, evaluations, linkages, and policy development. The core functions of epidemiology lay down a foundation on which epidemiologists can begin to work from. This paper will look at the benefits of incorporating all six of these functions into a working plan when health officials, medical personnel, first responders, etc., encounter a disease or illness that needs to be identified, treated and contained.
