Depending on your personal preference and need, there are a variety of operating systems available to users today. Whether it’s MAC OS, UNIX, Windows, etc they each have their own aspects and appeal that draw users in. The spotlight however, for the duration of this paper will be placed on a derivative of the UNIX family of operating system, Linux. The topics covered will include the history to include a handful of versions (distributions). Beginning with the history of Linux, in 1984, Richard Stallman, a programmer that was working for the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, left his position with a vision of software

The original release of Ubuntu used the GNOME desktop which was user friendly and robust but later released a KDE version known as Kubuntu as well which resembled more of a windows type environment as well as a server edition. In recent years Ubuntu has broken through the standard and has become heavily used on net books and cloud systems as lightweight yet robust platforms. Another widely used distribution is known as Linux Mint behind only Ubuntu in the number of Linux users. Started in 2006 with a purpose of providing a powerful yet comfortable operating system, Linux Mint is a community driven distribution which welcomes user feedback for upgrades and support. Linux Mint also boasts the capability of out of the box functionality requiring little maintenance and "full multimedia support". An iconic Linux distribution known as Red Hat was created by Marc Ewing in October of 1994. The distribution name derives from “a red Cornell University lacrosse hat Ewing wore that was given to him by his grandfather, while attending Carnegie Mellon University. The distribution was then bought in 1995 by Bob Young who had incorporated the ACC Corporation in 1993. Red Hat Software was then born and then went public on Wall Street on August 11, 1999. Only a few months after that with the new CEO, Matthew Szulik, Red Hat began acquiring other companies, such
In our world today there are so many different types of operating systems as well as features and applications that run on them. There are many similarities as well as differences between Windows 7, Linux and Windows Server 2008. The one enduring similarity is that all three are intended to be utilized as an operating system is meant to.
One of the good thing about it is that it is free to use and distribute to your other computers. Linux is not a fully operation system, and it needs additional software in order for it to work to its full potential. There are so many different packages, that there will be one that will fit you needs. Even though it is not a fully operation system, and can be loaded on most computer except Mac, is still only have just a few virus problems, good graphic interface and still good for use, but not much
| It is hard to understand the system of Linux because most people are not familiar
I propose that our company consider implementing Linux for our servers and workstations. There are many excellent reasons to employ Linux as the operating system of choice for our company: Linux is ‘tried and true’; is used by many large companies, such as Google©, Amazon©, Facebook©, and many of the cloud service providers; is less expensive; more reliable and stable; has extensive free community support; uses memory and CPU resources more efficiently; is reasonably easy and quick to install; and is much less vulnerable to viruses and malware than the Microsoft Windows© operating system. Linux can be used on almost any type or brand of computer or server, including older models. I will demonstrate that Linux is a viable and less expensive alternative to Windows and will perform well in our server and workstation environments.
Microsoft Windows has long dominated the business and home desktop market but there is a new contender on the block in the shape of LINUX that is beginning to compete with Microsoft Windows on many different fronts. What is this LINUX and how does it compare and contrast with the Microsoft Windows operating system?
After reviewing the source code form Stallman’s version, Linus was able to code together the first version of Linux. I feel that after reviewing that source code, Linus advance the code to be able to produce Linux. Using the GNU project, I think Linus was able to finally figure out what he wanted to achieved.
Linus Torvalds first invented Linux in the mid ‘90s. Linux is an open source Operating System which is based on Unix. This means that, they can be modified and distributed by anyone around the world. Linux was designed to provide Pc users a free and very low-cost and they are considered to be very efficient and fast in performing the system. Linux can mostly be found everywhere, this includes desktops, laptops including your
Expanding upon Linux, I have a strong desire to learn it. While at my internship at Harris, one of the people with whom I worked closely with was a master of Linux. It is a very intriguing operating system that is highly flexible. It has the highest security as its code is unique because it is open source, which allows for it to be programmed into any system. I have seen Linux based software used to hack into a computer, duplicate hard drives, and emulate systems.
This paper provides an overview of similarities between Windows 2000 and Knoppix Linux Boot disk, as well as including the advantages and disadvantages of both.
This is useful to tell about the Linux operating systems' history and how they were implemented in a way they became useful to the market place and business.
Linux runs faster than Windows and offers more choices with multiple desktops. Linux has individual text files. Linux has shortcuts in the programs and offers command lines to decrease the amount of clicks on the mouse to accomplish a task (Locutus, 2007).
<br>After three decades of use, the UNIX computer operating system from Bell Labs is still regarded as one of the most powerful, versatile, and
Despite this, most Linux distros, especially the major ones, are very intuitive and user-friendly. Also, the desktop environments in Linux are in many ways similar to Windows in their appearance. One thing which should be emphasized is that there is also a learning curve for Windows XP users who switch to Windows 7 or Windows 8.
This paper is a general overview of Unix operating system. It starts by presenting a brief history of the early development of Unix. It concentrates on main aspects of Unix operating system. Key concepts covered are interactive multi-user operating systems, the design objectives of Unix, file-store organization, text processing and programming, the role of C programming language with regard to portability and reliable system software, process control (signals and fork), error logging and recovery from system failures, modifiability and application.
The Linux was originally founded by Linus Torvalds. In 1991, he was a second year computer science student in Finland. He sought after an operating system that was similar to the UNIX system, but both UNIX and the hardware it ran on were excessively expensive. A UNIX version called Minix was available for free, but it did not reasonably meet his needs as it was simply an operating system for students, designed primarily as a teaching tool rather than an industry strength operating system. As a result, Torvalds studied Minix and proceeded to set out to write a new version. After six months of working to produce the new operating system, Torvalds made very little progress toward the utility of the system.
