Climate Change Is A Growing Concern

Greenhouse gases are the main causes of climate change. The sun emits sunlight which travels to earth causing it to warm up the surface, and then the heat is radiated back towards space. This normal cycle is interrupted by greenhouse gases that stop the heat from bouncing back into space(“Global Climate Change: Causes”). The gases absorb the heat and emit it back everywhere on earth. Because the gases are causing the temperature to rise, it is known as the greenhouse effect. Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect are nitrous oxide(N2O), methane (CH4), and carbon dioxide(CO2)(“Overview of Greenhouse Gases”).

Climate change is a real problem facing our world with all of the progression of today’s society. The amount of Greenhouse Gas emissions has gone up drastically in the past one hundred years alone. The use of transportation, industry, electricity and the deprivation of the world's natural resources has increased the amount of Carbon Dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. The Environmental Protection Agency has shown an increase in the Earth's temperature by 0.8 degrees C in the past century alone. It is proven that humans are the cause of global warming but it is not too late to change how we are.

However, it’s possible that some people in the world are willing to help; people are trying to decrease the chances of climate modification from raising. Even though climate change is very bad for the earth and toward humans, no one can put an end to this problem due to several causes which will affect us. Former President of the United States, Barack Obama, once said that “No challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change.” In fact, scientific evidence for climate change is undeniable and the effects of climate change are beginning to be felt all around the world (“Global Climate Change”). Furthermore, evidence to support these claims for climate change can be found anywhere from the tops of mountains to ice cores drawn from the bottom of the earth. For these reasons, the causes, effects, and solutions of climate change need to be understood, so that all people of the next generation still have a suitable habitat to live in.

But many climate scientists will tell you that this change in climate is due to humans and their activities. It is said that humans release greenhouse gases and “if emissions continue unchecked, they say the global warming could ultimately exceed 8 degrees Fahrenheit, which would transform the planet and undermine its capacity to support a large human population” (Gillis, 2015). To make it easier to understand, as sunlight reaches the Earth’s surface there are two things that can be done, one; it can either be reflected back into space or two, it can be absorbed by the Earth. Once the Earth absorbs the sunlight, it then releases some energy back into the atmosphere as infrared radiation, also known as heat. Then these greenhouse gases tend to act like a “blanket,” therefore making the Earth warmer than it would be otherwise. This process is what we call the “greenhouse effect.” The reason scientists say that climate change is caused by humans is that it’s simple, humans drive, cook food, and even heat or cool their homes, which release gases such as, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4 ), and water vapor (H2O).

Climate change occurs when weather patterns change continuously for an extended period of time. This leads to an increase in the global temperature, also known as global warming. When solar radiation is reflected back to space, a tiny amount of it is captured by a layer of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and many more. Carbon dioxide is the main contributor to the greenhouse effect. This is due to the heavy burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and volcanic eruptions.

Gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane all “have the ability to absorb thermal energy (heat) emitted by the earth and thus are able to warm the atmosphere” (“Greenhouse Gases”). This warming is known as the “greenhouse effect.” The majority of greenhouse gases are a result of humans burning fossil fuels to create energy. With more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the Earth’s climate is becoming warmer, leading to threatening consequences for the planet’s population.

Climate change is the single biggest environmental and humanitarian crisis of our time. Our Earth’s temperature is climbing at an alarming rate. Earth 's average temperature has risen by 1.4°F over the past century, and is projected to rise another 2 to 11.5°F over the next hundred years. The planet is seeing the devastating effects of a warmer earth; warmer oceans, melting ice caps, and rising sea levels. As these and other changes become more pronounced in the coming decades, they will likely present challenges to our society and our environment.

These issues are likely to worsen as climate change takes its toll. In the past, the cause of this severe climate change was unknown. Today, it is known that manmade climate change is occurring. Scientists have discovered that humans have had the greatest impact on the Earth’s ecosystem. Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, are causing the Earth to get hotter. Although humans are not the only cause of climate change, we contribute to this world wide problem because of the actions we take, which if affecting us now and will continue to affect us in the future.
