College Athletes Should Get Paid

College athletes should be paid because of the hard work, dedication and effort they put into their respective sports. These athletes are a major source of income for their schools and they are not receiving a penny for it. These college athletes deserved to be paid, colleges are using these athletes to get money and they are never given anything but a pat on the back and a good job. College athletes work and train extremely hard to perform at the highest level possible. In most cases, they spend more time training and preparing for their sport than they actually do learning and studying. They put so much on the line to play and they get nothing in return. Whether college athletes should or should not get paid has been a controversial topic throughout the Collegiate Athletic Association for many years now. According to the article “My Priceless Opportunity” by Bill Walton , he believes that NCAA student athletes should not get paid because “the players entering the game know the rules going in and that they have been given a chance to make something of their lives in exchange for the privilege of being a student athlete”. Others like Michael Wilbon, author of “As Colleges’ Greed Grows, So Does the Hypocrisy”, thinks student athletes should get paid due to their hard work and labor. While I respect and admire the diligent task of being both a student and an athlete, I strongly agree with Bill Walton and the many others who support college athletes not being paid.

After numerous scandals over the past several years of college athletes receiving improper benefits, the question has come up whether or not college athletes should be paid or not. College sports are a growing industry, and we have seen money destroy organizations, teams, and players in this industry.  The determination and motivation of college athletes supersedes professional athletes by their will to win; therefore, college athletes should not be paid.

Kids grow up loving to play sports in their free time. They never get paid to play when they are at a young age. They do it for the love of the game and for the need for competition. This is the way that it is in college right now. College athletes compete with all their hearts to be the best they can for their schools. They don’t get paid a cent. It has been a common debate if that is the right way to do it. Should it be that college athletes do not deserve to get paid for playing a sport? It should not be this way. College athletes certainly should get paid to play.

Imagine college athletes getting paid to play a sport, but technically they are not considered a “professional” athlete. It would be a terrible idea to pay college athletes to do what they are going to school for. Most college athletes get some or all of their college paid for, but they want to get paid in money too? It’s not right. They could spend the money unwisely and they could lose focus on what college is meant for and that is to learn to be able to obtain a job. I understand that college athletes have a risk of getting injured and they should get compensated for that risk. Nobody wants a student to get hurt on the field or court and lose their ability to compete and lose their scholarship, but they shouldn’t get paid to play for

This clashing of whether or not college athletes should get paid to play has been a hot topic throughout the nation for quite some time. Many believe that paying players will not help the players, but will cause more negative energy than positive. College Athletes are the school .One win or loss will determine what happens to the school. No sport is too small and no sport is too big , In any sport you can be injured and your whole athletic career will be over . Isn’t this enough to get paid ? All athletes will play to their best potential in college because they are awaiting the opportunities they may get after college. It is every athletes dream to get paid to play the sport they love and thrived in their whole life. College athletes do not necessarily need to be paid to play in college because they are paid in various ways and opportunities. As Brady, Berkowitz, and Upton report, the college experience for athletes is far superior to that of the regular student, in most cases, and athletes get to play on major television! (Brady, Berkowitz, Upton). Sometimes a lot of college athletes are asking for a lot. They get tremendous opportunities, experiences, and chances and not to mention, most are getting a free or almost free education. The amount of advantages that student-athletes get compared to regular college students is ridiculous. So the continuing question is, should college athletes get a paycheck?

Growing up people loved watching and imitating athletes, wanting to be them, not knowing the struggle it takes to get there. It ponders to say the college athlete who risk life and limb just by going out on the field no matter if an amateur or a professional should get paid or not by colleges. The professionals get paid, why not on the collegiate level? Some feel by the student’s getting paid it will lose what some say is lost in “paid professional sports” today, playing just for the love of the game. Every college athlete should be rewarded with money for sacrificing their time, schedule, schoolwork, and their bodies.

Some critics would say that college athletes shouldn't get paid while in college due to that players will get distracted from their school work or won't go to class. Also college athletes shouldn’t be paid because they aren't professional. Being paid isn't the only thing athletes should really be caring about. For them it's a privilege for the students to play college sports and young kids and teens dream about having that opportunity to play when they are older. Athletes stress becomes a major reason in how they think in life, athletes need to concentrate on sports and what is on the field.

College athletes should not in any way or fashion be paid or get any incentives whatsoever by the coaches or the universities for their play on the field or on the court. The players already have a humongous advantage in the classroom by getting extra help and attention by the professors, having an advantage in the work field by having high paid jobs lined up for them when they aren’t playing or practicing, and also getting to experience all the different cities they get to travel to and all the media and TV exposure and memories that last forever. In my opinion, college athletes should not be getting paid. Yes, they bring a significant amount of revenue to their schools and the NCAA. The college athlete is a student first. College athletics is an extracurricular activity that students pursue while in the path of a higher education . It's not a job; they are not professionals, no matter how advanced they may be at the sport. They are just students competing against each other. They are compensated by these colleges through generous athletic scholarships. For many of these athletes, they are given a rare opportunity to earn a higher education and pursue their dreams of playing a sport.

My stance is that collage athletes should be paid to play sports. My reasoning for wanting these college athletes to get paid is because they aren't allowed to have a job while playing a college sport. Think of all the things they need, food, clothes, school materials, and possibly money to pay for their housing. You can make the argument that college student on scholarship have their education and a lot of times housing is paid for by the college. While that may be true for some college athletes, not all college athletes having their housing provided for them. Even still, we can all agree there is more daily expenses incurred in our day to day living. Not allowing college students to get payed is making it hard for them.

College athletes are finally getting attention on the fact that they are not paid. I believe that whether or not it is college or pro sports they deserve a salary. These players put their heart and soul on the field and get nothing in return. In the articles “Athletes New Day” by Paul Marx and “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid” by Warren Hartenstine, the reasons for college athletes to be paid are very evident. No matter the case, if the students move on to pro sports or not after college, they should be entitled to some pay for their contributions. College athletes deserve to be compensated for their playtime in these sports, sales of products with their name on it, and even compensation for their injuries.
