The founding fathers had a good amount of reasons for rebelling against the British government and declaring independence. The Colonist felt that the government was not protecting their rights as citizens and lost the right to rule them. The taxation system wasn't fair and they were not represented in Parliament.
During the American Revolution, patriots were the people who supported the war against Britain, and loyalists were the people who opposed the war. I would be a patriot during the American Revolution because England’s debt was not the colonists’ responsibility, they were doing a good job governing for themselves, and innocent people died in the Boston Massacre.
The thirteen British colonies of North America were slowly going into independence. The people (colonists) were proud of being British, they had no desire to separate from their own country. April 19, 1775 people made calls for independent. Also in that year of July the Second Continental Congress sent the King a request for redress and reconciliation, which Dickinson had to drain indubitably.
After the end of the revolutionary war america and britain came together with a treaty to end the war called the treaty of paris. With the signing of the treaty america gained its freedom and right to govern itself but also something else. America also gained its independence when the treaty was signed.
The events surrounding the Boston Massacre exposed sharp divisions in the British colonies in North America with two distinct rival groups emerging, namely, the Loyalists and Patriots. The Loyalists were dedicated supporters of the British Crown whereas the Patriots were independence-minded colonists keen to break away from English rule. As a result, both feuding parties would seek to promote their own agenda without regard for core values such as accuracy and impartiality.
They felt as if the war was unnessessary and will only bring death in which didn’t have to be brought. Also through their eyes patriots were doing things very uncalled for because Britian was only trying to help and guide America to a better state. Loyalist James Chalmers said, “Great Britain has afforded to all mankind the most perfect proof of her wise, lenient and magnanimous government on the Colonies…” this was said in the speech “Plain Truth”. This quote states the idea of the loyalist being that of, Britian doing nothing wrong through their actions in the colonies. Later he also states, “Innumerable are the advantages of our connection with Britain, and a just dependence on her is a sure way to avoid the calamities and horrors of war. [Thomas Paine] surely forgets that when independent, we cannot trade with Europe…” Another arguement posed by the loyalist was, the colonies needed Britian for trade purposes. Without Britian the colonies would fall into ruin because of economic and physical downfalls of the society and the
Many people who lived in the colonies were not English; they were German, Dutch, Swedish, Jewish, Scots-Irish, and French. Some people were a mixture of many different ethnic groups. This “mixed” group of people, which could not be found anywhere else in the world, that united to fight for their rights led to the creation of a separate identity (from Britain). The British thought that this “open Rebellion” was unjustifiable and that the colonists had no reason to turn against their mother country, who “…protected them against the Ravages of their Enemies…” (Document F). The American colonists insisted that they were still loyal to Great Britain (even though they fought against British troops at times) and did not want to “…dissolve that union which has so long and so happily subsisted…” (Document E). They pledged their loyalty to Great Britain by sending the Olive Branch Petition to King George III in 1775. The rejection of this peace request led many American colonists, who only wanted to secure their rights, to desire complete independence (from Great Britain). The American colonists were willing to do anything to keep their rights, and in the end, they realized that they would have to unite and separate from Great Britain in order to be free. During this time, Richard Henry Lee, the fourteenth President of the Continental Congress, stated that “…all
The Patriots were the Americans that were against the British and vigorously supports their country. The Loyalists or Tories are the people who support the British king or the British government. The Green Mountain Boys had a major part in this war because they were the ones to defeat the British in this battle. The Hessians were the German troops hired by the British to help fight during the American Revolution. They were from the German state of Hesse-Cassel. This wasn’t the first time that we have fought the Loyalists in battle there is countless more.
The Loyalists believed that the minor key rules and regulations for no big deal and that's the way things were and are and you have to deal . Where the Patriots were tired of the taxation without representation the. The products that they have learned to grow in love like tea from being taxed without their knowledge. They were constantly fighting Wars abroad, which they had no say in.
In the early years of the United States of America, colonists were trying to gain independence from the surrounding nations and had a difficult time accomplishing it.
Treaty of Paris 1763:The treaty of Paris declared that France lost all of its North american. The british thought the colonists were beneath them and the the colonists thought the british were snobs.
Many Loyalists agreed that the American colonists had suffered at the hands of the British, but the Loyalist hoped that a peaceful reconciliation with British government was possible. Loyalists were brutally attacked and killed. Their property was destroyed or taken away. Many loyalists left the American Colonies for their own safety. Some Loyalists moved to England or to nearby Canada. Those living in the American colonies had various reasons for choosing their side. Most of the Iroquois Native Americans, had a working relationship with British officials. They were angered by colonists pushing into their territory and sided with Britain. For example, if a Patriot landowner was cruel and always raised the rent, the tenant would be a Loyalist. If the Patriot landowner was kind and collected a fair rent, the tenant would be a
All of the American colonists considered themselves British to begin with. They lived by British civility, relied on British support, and thought with a British mindset, in one way or another. Even those that opposed the conservative, crown-loving Tories, pulled their values and ideals from British thought. These were the Whigs, who felt opposed to the King, power, tyranny, and slavery, all in the name of liberty, virtue and direct representation.
In the eyes of the colonists, they were gaining nothing from being British citizens that they could not give themselves, and were putting themselves on a lower level by remaining under the political threshold of the British monarchy. With no vote in Parliament and having such a detrimental physical separation between themselves and their government, maintaining an allegiance to the British crown seemed both absurd and counter-productive. Another important aspect—besides the negative repercussions of remaining under British service—that showcases the value of independence to the American colonists is the fact that they thought they, “were, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States.” The fact that they believed that they had the right to their independence if they wished was revolutionary and practically unheard of at that time; however, in the years to come, this idea would spread throughout countries like France and Haiti thanks to the rebellious actions of the colonies. Without this
The American Colonies’ transition from British territory to their independent nation was full of hardships. Legislation and British troops attempted to push the colonists into submission with resilience the colonists fought back and won their independance. In order to do so they had to change their ideals and beliefs on their rights. They went from fighting for their rights because they were the same as the British citizens, to fighting for their rights on the basis that they were different than the British citizens.
