This essay will analyse the relation between Descartes ad scepticism and I will argue that he is not a philosophical sceptic. Firstly, philosophical scepticism is questioning whether any knowledge can be known with certainty. Descartes was doubtlessly sceptical of whether the things he knew were certain or not, he wants to find a foundation of knowledge that is so certain that it can dismiss the doubts of the strongest scepticism. He believes that we acquire most our knowledge through our sense-perception, however, he argues that our senses are not error proof and therefore he doubts his entire foundation of knowledge. He further proves his argument by saying that when we are dreaming we are not aware that this is not our reality so what is there to stop us from thinking that the experiences we’re having now are not reliable. He uses another argumentative device to disproof the credibility of the knowledge we acquire through intellect of an all powerful demon that employs his whole energies in deceiving him. Yet, he says that god is ultimately good, so He is not going to deceive human kind, but it is possible that contrary to his goodness He did allow him to be deceived by this evil genius; coming to the conclusion with this that he doubts having a body or any senses yet acknledging that he falsely believes he does because of this evil genius. This is how he ends he first meditation; with lack of certainty where the knowledge that is acquired by senses are doubted through his dream argument while knowledge acquired through intellect are doubted by the demon argument.
