The Great Depression was an economic downturn in America that lasted from 1929 until about 1939, making it the longest lasting depression ever experienced by the industrialized world. The stock market crash caused a chain reaction that involved problems such as unemployment, deflation, an increase in debt, and general poverty for lower class citizens. Attempts at escaping the depression weren’t altogether successful. In fact, most of the efforts resulted in high consumer debt as well as over optimistic loans given to the public by banks and business investors. The Depression caused severe political changes in the US as well as its obvious economic failures. After three years of the depression, Herbert Hoover lost the presidential election
The Great Recession of 2007-2009 was one of the most economically disastrous events in American history. The housing market took a significant downturn during this period. People were not cautious when it came to their money and loans. Larger loans were given out to people, even to those with bad credit and low incomes. These large loans caused many homes to go through foreclosure since people were unable to pay off their mortgage debts. These debts were created by banks increasing the interest rates on the loans significantly in a short period. In 2008, foreclosures were up by eighty-two percent. This increase is significant because the previous percentage of foreclosures was at fifty-one percent from 2007. Unemployment skyrocketed, and people

During the 1920’s America was experiencing great economic growth. As WWI was ending Americans were out of energy. For almost 100 years they had been facing the problems of sectionalism, civil war, reconstruction, imperialism, and WWI. By the end they were ready to just sit back and party. Demand sky-rocketed and brought great economic growth. Americans failed to see the great problem looming overhead though. The Great Depression was caused by a combination of factors- a natural slowdown of the business cycle, weaknesses of the 1290’s economy magnified the slowdown, the republican response failed to help, a great environmental disaster, and the collapse of the world economy all contributed to the cause of the Great

A) The first reason that caused the Great Depression were the consequences of WW1. The Versailes Treaty caused bitterness throughout Europe and it didn’t really resolve much. The U.S. went in great debt from allied loans to other countries. The second cause was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff act. It made the highest tariff that the U.S. has ever had. It also damaged out economy. The final cause was the bad performance of the Federal Reserve.

Every nation, especially the United States, now have to find a way out.
The Great Depression and the Great Recession were two financial crises that ruined the economy for a great number of people. Not only was the U.S. significantly impacted, but the world was affected as well. Although many years set them apart, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Barack Obama both responded to dire situations in a similar manner by implementing acts that prompted government involvement, created jobs for the unemployed, and promoted pump priming.
Peter Temin (2010) in his comparison of the Great Depression and the Great Recession, explains that there was a delayed response the Great Depression; "voters had to wait three years after the Great Depression began and a full year after the Fed turned a recession into a depression to vote on public policy" (Temin 2010). However, the complete collapse of the financial system made it possible for President Roosevelt to make drastic reforms to the financial system that led to about half a century without any major financial crisis (Temin 2010). In contrast, the financial meltdown that started the Great Recession happened at the height of the presidential elections in the United States. Because of the timing, Temin argues, voters had a chance
Many people think that the Great Depression was caused solely by the stock market crash. Anybody who tells you this probably didn’t pass U.S. History in high school. The fact is, the Great Depression was caused many different factors. Four of which were overproduction, uneven distribution of wealth, protective tariffs, and the four “sick industries” of the 1920’s.
There was no single cause to the rise of the Great Depression, however many situations and events came together to make it happen. Over-production of goods, over spending, and a weak banking system caused the depression to occur. However, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 was the main cause to the start of the Great Depression. The Wall Street Crash began on October 24, 1929 now known as Black Thursday. 12.9 million shares were traded. By October 29th, stock prices began to plummet and banks started to call in for many loans. About thirty billion in stock values disappeared by mid November. This marked the beginning of the Great Depression.
America has experienced several recessions and depressions in the past. Most recently, the housing crisis sparked a recession which has led to rising unemployment. The largest recession so far has been the Great Depression of the 1930s. A stock market crash in 1929 caused loss of savings which led to unemployment, lower wages, and a distrust of the banking system. The affects of it lasted into the 1940s. Franklin Roosevelt was elected president during this period; legislation he passed tried to alleviate the suffering of the public. As a result of the Great Depression, Franklin Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps to employ jobless young men and improve government land.
