Composer Requirements

If you don’t have music education you don’t have musicians. If you don’t have musicians you don't have music. It is as simple as that.

Students will gain an understanding of how composers write music. Students will work their way through the composition process including lyric writing, improvisation and melodic composition. Through this process students will gain a deeper understanding of the text they are drawing from. Students will use expressive elements to effectively tell their stories by using music.

Not only did Beethoven’s father instruct him, he was also given lessons by multiple people who taught him the basic knowledge of music, and instructed him an assortment of instruments. Unfortunately, unlike Mozart, Beethoven did not continue his education beyond elementary school and only continued his studies in music. Mozart’s father taught his children not only music, but grammar, mathematics, language, moral and religious enlightenment, and other various components of education and electives. Therefore, Mozart was educated in many areas, unlike Beethoven’s family life was far different form Mozart’s’. At an early age, Beethoven had to help provide for his family after his father fell ill and started to consume alcohol heavily. Beethoven sacrificed his time to help provide for his family, especially for his two younger brothers. Luckily, working as an assistant organist, and holding a place on the court theater, Beethoven’s earnings were vast. Mozart however, traveled around Europe with his family performing for ambassadors and counts for his earnings. when he preformed the profits of the shows went toward his family, however the expenses to travel far out weighted any profit. Although while traveling, the family took many detours, the musical influences that they met and gained along the way only helped form Mozart’s compositions.

Known as the most influential musician of all time, Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770. Beethoven’s talent was noticed at a young age and he soon became a pioneer in the world of music for breaking the traditional bounds of style and form. Over the course of his life, Beethoven produced nine symphonies, seven concertos, and a total of forty-two sonatas. Although these numbers are few when compared to other composers such as Joseph Haydn, his work was very substantial. Ludwig van Beethoven’s compositions were greatly influenced by the changes in the world around him. His ability to stray away from the practices that restrained other composers inspired musicians around him and changed the practices of music forever.

Giacomo Puccini was the fifth child of Michele and Albina Puccini. He grew up surrounded by music and talented musicians. At the age of five, Puccini’s father passed away. As an infant, classical music became a pivotal part of my life. Since those early days, I have been intent on going to college and majoring in piano performance. My love for classical music and the art of performance has intensified progressively over the course of my life. My appreciation for practice has also intensified over the years, as it has become second nature to me. Aside from the numerous aspects of being a performer, I am an avid composer, and I firmly believe that composing allows me the luxury of pushing the parameters in a more personal, adventurous frame of mind. These several avenues available in music inspire me to better myself as a musician, and as a person each day. I want to major in music because I am deeply interested

Music is a beautiful form of producing harmony and expressing emotions, but a tune cannot suddenly pop up out of the abyss. Someone had to write music to be played.
