The issue of concealed carry has led to arguments in recent years, with those opposed arguing that it is a danger to society, and those who support it saying it ofers protection from the dangers of society. The increased media coverage of shootings—the “media contagion” factor outlined by the American Psychological Association—has caused the awareness of firearm danger to rise (Media). Further, the gun culture of the United States has promoted the widespread use of firearms since revolutionary times, making guns prevalent in society (Kennett). These factors have grim results, making the United States the leader of developed countries in gun homicides — with almost five times more gun deaths than in any other developed country. This has caused proponents of gun control, such as David Cohens, Eugene Volokh, and David Williams — a Drexel University law professor, A UCLA law professor, and a professor at Indiana University and NYU, respectively — to discount the second amendment as outdated and archaic, primarily with the argument that the founding fathers could not have foreseen the effects of modern firearms (Williams)(Volokh). Cohens also calls into question other things that the constitution says to prove his point that it is not adequate, such as the 3/5th clause dealing with congressional representation regarding slavery (Cohens) . However, these arguments do not outline how to solve the problems at hand, and in Cohens’ argument the use of outside, irrelevant examples leads to confusion. In response to this argument, George Leef, the director of research at the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, argued that “Even if they had known about machine guns, they would have written the amendment the same way, understanding that laws meant to prevent bad people from doing bad things won’t work” (Leef). His argument is based around the belief that repealing the second amendment would not be effective, and that there are many ideas in the ‘outdated’ constitution that still hold true. So in that sense, the constitution should be updated, but not …show more content…
The New York Times, using data from the Violence Policy Center found that from 2007-2015, there were 28 mass shootings attributed to concealed carry, in which 136 people were killed (a mass shooting for the purpose of the study was defined as 3 or more victims). A different New York Times report also found that 8,124 people were killed in the United States in 2014, about 27 a day. The report also found that in the same time frame there were at least 722 non-self defense deaths, which lessens the self defense reason for buying a gun. In these, 218 cases also ended with the gun owner committing suicide (Concealed). This calls into question the mental health of some concealed carry owners, and that there need to be stricter requirements for
Gun ownership in the United States is one of the most controversial issues today. The US ranks #1 in gun ownership based on number of guns per capita with 112.6 guns per 100 residents (2014). Lately, there is the so-called American gun crisis due to a series of mass shootings that are becoming more frequent and deadlier. Now, and more than ever, gun ownership is on the hot seat after the shooting in San Bernardino, California. And with this, we tackle the debate over concealed carry – its pros and cons.
With the popular culture providing positive images of guns, the United States has a gun prevalence that is very rare in the modern world. While many people appreciate the “gun culture”, guns are heavily involved in violence in the United States. According to U.S. Department of Justice, since 1960, more than 750,000 Americans have died under firearms, including homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries. The figure 1 provides a comprehensive survey of U.S. violent crimes for the period from 1993 to 2011.This figure illustrates that from 1993 to 2011, about 60% to 70% of homicides were associated with a firearm. Over the same period, between 6% and 9% of all nonfatal violence, with about 20% to 30% of robberies and 22% to 32% of aggravated assaults involving a firearm.
“A well-regulated Militia, being necessary for the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”, Second Amendment of the Declaration of Independence. While some people see this Amendment as a right to have guns, others think that this right is limited by the “a well-regulated militia” part of the Amendment. The controversial dispute between opponents and supporters of gun rights seems to be a non-ending situation, both sides of the political spectrum are trying to influence public opinion through media campaigns. The right of the people to own arms has been discussed, particularly by the public more than by the tribunal. The Supreme Court, in June 2008, by a vote of 5–4, decided that Americans
“The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.” -NRA chief. This statement has been largely disputed relating to the carrying of concealed weapons in public and whether it should be allowed or not. People try to use the history of guns in America and the interpretation of the second amendment to prove or disprove a point. One can also compare the good and the bad of each side and decide for themselves what they think the best option is. The argument is whether or not concealed carry affects America and it’s citizens in a more positive or negative way. It is only when it’s decided what the effects are can you go forward figuring out the solutions.
Gun issue is not only a big problem from United States, it’s also a big problem around the world. With more and more people buying guns, gun violence increases everywhere. “ Guns are more lethal than more other method, people try” he adds “ Americans own an estimated 300 million guns” (nytimes.com). As gun ownership increases, the arguments about gun control can be easily found online in America. “Over the past 25 years, Americans’ support for stricter gun control laws has been generally declining even as the number of mass shootings is on the rise. While some high-profile shootings have resulted in calls for increased restrictions, that support has proved fleeting thus far. Gun control is one of the most sharply divisive issues in the U.S. today”(Perez-Pena). America does not have strong gun control law, which cause many criminals to possess guns and commit crimes. “ The vast majority of guns used in 15 recent mass shootings including at least two of the guns used in the San Bernardino attack, were bought legally and with a federal background
In the United States of America the right to bear arms gave birth to a phenomenon called the “gun culture,” the term coined in 1970 by a historian Richard Hofstadter, which describes America’s heritage and affection for weapons(1). Not only did gun culture become an inseparable part of American democracy, but also it is considered to be synonymous with independence and freedom, the most important values for American society. Even though the crime rate and murder rate in the U.S. is higher than in any other developed country, U.S. citizens oppose every attempt made to pass gun control legislation(2). However, it may sound like a paradox, but the crime level in the most liberal states, when it comes to gun ownership, is the lowest in the
Should concealed weapons permit holders be allowed to carry their guns while on campus? I think they should because with everything that is going on in the societies today nowhere is really safe. I feel a person gets the adequate training and receive your permit why not? I feel this way due to some of the recent tragedies that have hit close to home such as: the Charleston Six where six people were gunned down in church, the shooting of a six year old kid at school playing on a playground in Anderson SC, the Virginia tech massacre, killing of a professor at University of Arkansas and also a shooting at Oakland elementary in greenwood South Carolina, that may have been prevented or had less casualties if the staff of the schools
I am against concealed carry laws that allow peaple to carry guns not visible to others. For example The Trayvone Martin case which happened in 2012.George Zimmerman would never have shot and killed trayvon martin if he had never had a concealed weapons permit, society as a whole would never heard of either of those gentleman is my opinion if the concealed weapons permit issuing peaple, government had a better screening processs.
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution grants every American the right to bear arms. While this inherent civil right has good intentions, American society has ultimately corrupted what it means to carry a firearm by distorting its purpose. Our misuse of firearms has led to a society plagued by gun violence. The presence of gun violence in American society is neither an ambiguous nor new occurrence. Gun violence has resulted in approximately 297 people shot per day, resulting in the U.S. having the most shootings out of every other nation in the world (“Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence,” 2016). While it is noteworthy that gun violence has declined since the 1990s, it is ironic that America is an industrialized,
How would it feel if there were more law abiding people that carry a concealed weapon, this would help deter crime and help the country become safer and more crime free. The people who are scared of guns don't need to be, the firearm laws restrict certain guns and ammo from being used and sold to civilians.
Throughout colonial America, Gun control laws have been promoted through the criminalization of transferring guns to slaves, Native Americans, indentured servants and those holding religious faith. In addition, to criminalizing the transfer of weapons, gun control laws also sought to regulate the amount of gun powders that can be stored in homes and the ban of guns containing gun powder in houses. Specifically, in the District of Columbia et al. v. Heller (2008), Justice Antonin Scalia stated that “like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited” (554 U.S. 1, at 2). In other words, the argument, from opponents of gun control, is seen from a limited perspective of what the Second Amendment says but not seen from the context behind the history of why the Second Amendment was written. Hence, “context is everything, and the context of the Constitution tells us not to expect nitpicking
This article states the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and how it lists the United States as the country with the highest rate of firearm violence among modern communities. On average, about 33,000 people are killed by gun violence each year. On an average day 96 Americans are killed with guns, there are nearly 13,000 gun homicides a year in the United States, 50 women are shot to death by their intimate partners and for every one person killed with guns, two more are injured. Black people are 10 times more likely to be killed by guns than any other race. The impact of gender and age says that 87% of gun deaths occurred in boys and 13% occured in girls. Boys were seven times more likely to be killed by guns than girls,
Over several years gun violence has became an epidemic. Gun control supporters in the public health field claim that gun violence has become a “epidemic.” The American gun murder rate is 25 times the amount of the other high income nations gun murder rate. In 2015, over 36,000 people died due to gun violence and gunfire. Also America’s national firearm death rate climbed to 12.0 pre 100,000 people in 2016, according
The argument in this article is President Trump signaled support for one piece of gun control legislation on Monday, five days after a mass shooting at a Florida high school left 17 people dead and scores injured. "The president is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system," Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, wrote in a statement Monday morning. After a mass shooting in Las Vegas last year, officials said they were studying a ban on bump stocks, an attachment that allows a rifle to fire more frequently. Over the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump weighed gun control measures in conversations with friends, according to people who spoke to him. Trump has faced two of the country's
I find it shocking that civilians in both Missouri and Georgia (the state I choose for the discussion board) do not need a concealed carry license and permit for a firearm. I think there needs to more restrictions on who should be allowed to obtain a gun and the requirement to have a concealed carry license and state permit for their weapon(s). This could be a potential factor in what can complicate a firearm investigation by not knowing if the person in possession of the gun is the legal
