Cultural Differences And Cultural Diversity

One’s environment has a huge impact on the person’s morals and upbringing. The culture that surrounds individuals allows and leads these individuals to join a specific social status or class. A person’s goals and aspirations can be attributed to the individuals that person surrounds themselves with. Culture and ethnic diversity leads one to have different religious, linguistic, and social background. The human race is so diverse and interesting due to the ethnical diversity that surrounds us. Different regions in the United States acquire different mindsets, food preferences, and everyday lifestyles.

The United States of America is a perfect example of cultural diversity. Starting with the Mayflower landing in Massachusetts Bay in 1620, to the Great Migration from 1915 to 1930, to the continual immigration into our country today this country has seen its culture grow and reshape itself over the years. The culture of the United States is diverse but understanding and appreciating various cultures does not always exist within today’s classroom or in today’s society. Understanding or even defining cultural diversity , identifying the challenges cultural diversity brings, or how to face cultural diversity are all issues educators face in today’s classroom.

Ronald Takaki writes a very powerful introductory paragraph to show that people need more education on culture diversity. Takaki describes his experience when he was racially profiled by his taxi driver on his way to a hotel. He introduces his setting as Virginia which according to the census bureau has a 70.2% white population to show he is in a predominately white area. He also describes his driver as a “white man in his forties”(539) to portray him as the “average american”. Meanwhile Takaki gives no clue to the reader about his ethnicity or background so we can interpret how his driver was stereotyping Takaki in the following conversation:“How long have you been in this country?” he asked. “All my life,” I replied, wincing. “I was born

The book also explores how despite immigration seeing as a normality in the Silicon Valley area, most of the interaction is shaped by differences in ethnic and racial traits. Jimenez explains that “the way that interviewees articulated the “us” and “them” in their lives comported with social-scientific research that emphasizes ethnic and racial differences as sources of both unity and division” (Jimenez, 2017). Although the cultural diversity is so ingrained in the community of Silicon Valley, this diversity is also a constant reminder of the racial and ethnic differences in the community which could sometimes generate negative outcomes. Although I am middle-aged, I have never traveled outside of the United States nor have I had the privilege to experience a wide diversity of cultures. Other than research or articles that I have read throughout my life, I have little knowledge pertaining to other cultures. However, through my former employment and my daughter, I have some experience and knowledge of the Hispanic families that relocated to our area.

So today I am supposed to stand here in front of you guys and talk to you about cultural diversity. What exactly is cultural diversity you ask? It’s the diverse varieties of different ethnic groups within a society. So with that being said I would like to take this time and share with you some of the background of my cultural background, which is Italian. I wanted to cover the important topics such as, their movement to the U.S, The Mafia, and most importantly.. their food!

Everyone has a different way of life, whether it be by the way you talk, dress, or eat. Or maybe how you dance, sing, and perform. These aspects of everyday life is called culture. Everybody in the world has a culture, but not all cultures are the same from person to person. In the book, The Miles Between, a group of teens, who attend a boarding school, have a different way of life than I do. Even though there is many differences between our cultures, there are still some similarities peeping through all the differences.

Sometimes it is hard for people to start and operate a business in their own countries. It is sometimes advisable that these people should start thinking of launching their business in foreign countries. To start your international business, there are many methods that are available to an enterprise for opening a business in a foreign nation. Globalization has made expanding into foreign markets easier for huge corporations as well as small businesses. These methods include:

Cultural diversity is the quality of diverse or different cultures, as opposed to monoculture, the global monoculture, or homogenization of cultures, akin to cultural decay. A collectivist culture teaches members the importance of group values such as benevolence, tradition, and conformity. Sue and Walt have at least three good examples of collectivist culture. These are just a few examples of cultural differences that happen through out the movie.

Many different agencies often accept that diversity relates only to precise ethnic and racial groups. Nonetheless, there is more than ethnicity and racial groups’ there are factors that might affect treatments; for example, a client's gender, age, sexual preference, spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic status, physical and mental capacities, and geographic location. Counselors need to understand how those factors can be utilized in a positive motive way with a client during treatment and/or how they can be barriers to engagement, treatment, and recovery (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, 2006).

I perceive myself as a person that values a diverse culture. In my life, I was raised to respect and value the culture of other people. My parents would always say that every human being needs to be respected regardless of their beliefs, their social network, and their economic status. The culture of others varies and is defined as the language that the diverse people speak, the religion they believe, and the lifestyle that individuals choose. Furthermore, I’m from a country that has diverse communities who have different cultures, but also have some similarities. To value others culture is what I most respect, and do it my way of life. A culture of any region provides a complete framework to its inhabitants to how to organize themselves, their actions and thoughts with respect to their environment. Thus culture is not innate; instead it is learned by the people as they continue to live in that particular region. This culture drives their thinking, actions and basically all kinds of interaction with their surroundings. Thus, it is different for different areas and people from these areas learn different ways to interact by each other(Neuliep, 2015).Moreover, people from different cultures differ from each other because of their context in which they move about. This context plays an important role in providing meaning to their interaction. There are some things that cannot be understood by verbal words alone; they have to be justified by the context in which they exist. This has been argued by Edward Hall, according to whom, “context carries varying proportions of the meaning” (Gamsrieglerm, 2005). Because of these differences in interaction due to differences in the context in which these people exist, culture has been divided into two sub-categories. One is high-context culture and the other is low-context culture. These two terms are used to refer to the differences in culture between different societies because of the difference in context, and have been suggested by a well-known U.S. anthropologist Edward T. Hall (Hofstede, 2011).

Since I started this class, I have a learned a great deal about cultural diversity in the classroom and abroad. My perspective has changed slightly but my knowledge of this subject has improved. In my family, my father taught me about the civil rights movement and the evils of segregation in the U.S. My parents taught me to be tolerant of all humans, no matter what they look like, how they dress, or their sexual orientation. My family has always been liberal thinkers who taught me the dark history of racism and bigotry in this country. As an educator I would be accepting to all race, creeds, and religious peoples.

One of the most captivating cities in the world, Istanbul, known for its western and eastern traditional cities and being built on two continents has arguably one of the richest histories of architecture in the world. Rich periods in time can be exemplified through architectural examples can be observed in many structures throughout the country. Each defined period in Istanbul’s history can be clearly observed through its visual markers left in architecture. Even today, the cultural diversity and identity can be pictured through architecture.

Due to its violent history, Cambodia has a unique blend of ethnicities. The majority of the population is Khmer, with minorities such as Vietnamese, Cham, and Chinese, with Vietnamese being the largest. Many Khmer from south Vietnam, called Khmer Kraom, which includes young men who come as Buddhist monks. The Cham, who are predominantly Muslim, usually live in riverfront communities, and live off of fishing, small businesses, and livestock. The Chinese population generally have a better relation with the other cultures in Cambodia, with much more intermarriage between them and Khmer and Vietnamese.
