CYPOP 1 * Understand the development and learning of babies and young people
Cross ref CYP 3.1
1.2 Explain how development and learning are inconnected. How and why variations occur in rate and sequence of development and learning. That learning may take place in different ways. The importance of play.
Development and learning are interconnected as first a child has to learn a new skill and will then go on to develop this before moving on to learn a new skill and create a pattern of learning. An example of this would be a child feeding themselves, when first weening a care giver will feed the child, offering encouragement for them to open their mouth. The child will identify the pattern that they open their mouths and food is

Learning requires thought, memory perception and concentration
Development of children begins at conception however the parent’s health and lifestyle prior to conception could influence a baby development.
Smoking during the first trimester of pregnancy could lead to the placenta not developing fully. As the placenta carries oxygen and blood to the foetus this may impair growth and link to low birth weights. Babies born to smoking mothers are 30% more likely to have a premature baby which could lead to respiratory distress, problems feeding and they could have difficulty regulating their body temperature. Babies undergo withdrawal like systems and tend to be more jittery and harder to settle. Babies being brought up in a smoking household are at increased risk of cot death and may go on to develop asthma during childhood.
Most pregnancies progress with the mother being healthy, however in some cases problems do arise with the mother developing complications. This can in the form of gestational diabetes. Mothers who didn’t have diabetes prior to pregnancy exhibit high blood sugar levels, in most cases this is during the later stages of pregnancy, this could lead to pre-eclampsia and babies could be born with higher birth weights. If left unchecked mothers can develop type 2 diabetes post pregnancy.
Another complication could be pre eclampsia, this is a medical condition that presents itself with high blood pressure, protein in urine and
To better explain the sequence and rate of each aspect of development, the development will be divided into age groups:
The word development refers not to the physical growth of children and young people, but to the skills and knowledge that they are developing. When looking at child development it is divided into the following areas –
Creative learning is about how children are actively involved in their own learning and their ability to make choices and decisions. This can be achieved by providing a creative environment, allowing exploration through play and praising the child’s creative efforts. Creative learning is about helping children develop imaginative thinking through exploration of materials, objects and problem solving skills like ICT. It is also about giving children opportunities to make connections between different areas and to relate to them. Some creative learning activities may be goal orientated like the
Theories of development are important as they can influence practice and help us understand a Childs way of learning, behaviour and reactions
Development encompasses more than just the changes the body and mind goes through, and many psychologists study the relationship between physical, cognitive, and social development. Physical development begins at conception, whereas cognitive development does not begin until the fetal stage. During this time, the brain becomes much more sophisticated, the hemispheres grow rapidly and the interconnections between
Cigarette smoking increases a wide range of issues, with prematurity (20-30%) and low birth weight (which doubles) being the most probable. The first trimester is considered a critical time for growth as the fetus is beginning to develop organs. If a woman smokes only in her trimester and then quits, she has put her fetus at risk of developing a birth defect. Also, the second and third trimesters are important as well due to the fact that neurological defects result if a woman is smoking
Besides that, it can also increase the risk that your baby is born prematurely or with low birth weight. Premature babies often have health problems. Women who smoke or exposed to tobacco smoke during pregnancy have twice the risk of having a baby with low birth weight. Babies with this condition increases the risk of mental disability, health problems, even
The number one risk to unborn babies is smoking. Smoking during pregnancy reduces the amount of oxygen that the baby receives and increases the risk of miscarriage, bleeding, and morning sickness. Chemicals inhaled while smoking may lead to other health problems with the baby. Reduced birth weight, premature birth, increased risk of SIDS, and stillbirth are other possible consequences. Pregnant women should also avoid second hand smoke, as it carries much of the side effects as actual
Smoking during pregnancy can increase the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and low birthweight infant.
All expecting mothers will be tested for gestational diabetes during their pregnancy. Expecting mothers who are over the age of 25, over weight, or have a family history of diabetes may be tested earlier and more frequently. This condition can be prevented by exercise and diet before conceiving and during pregnancy, self-monitoring is also effective. If gestational diabetes is diagnosed the non-treated effects for the mother and fetus can include large birth weight of the baby and a possible premature delivery. Other effects can increase the chances of a cesarean delivery and in rare cases neonatal death. With proper treatment and care from you and your health care provider you can have a healthy baby and result in no diabetes in the
Most babies of gestational diabetic mothers are healthy, but if untreated, gestational diabetes can lead to:
Approximately 25% of babies born to smoker mothers have low birth weight. Pregnant women who exposed to secondhand smoke during pregnancy are high likely to have low birth weight babies. Babies who born low in weigh or premature are exposed to many health problems and likely to die due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) three times more than those who are not exposed to cigarette smoke. Babies whose mothers are exposed to secondhand smoke during pregnancy are likely to have weak lung than those whose mothers are not exposed to secondhand smoke (CDC,
Smoking while pregnant is a known teratogen. For those who don’t know, a teratogen is an agent or factor that causes malformation of an embryo. Smoking is very bad for a baby’s health before and after your baby is born. Many people don’t understand the importance of this, nor do they understand that not only does an unborn child get the smoke, but all the chemicals in a cigarette as well. Cigarettes contain more than 4,000 chemicals, like nicotine, cyanide, lead, carbon monoxide, and tar. Not to mention at least 60 cancer causing chemicals. 20-30% of low birth weight babies, 14% premature labors, and 10% of infant deaths are caused from smoking during pregnancy according to American Lung Association. Smoking increases the risk of pregnancy complications at any and every stage of a pregnancy. Second hand and third hand smoke is just as bad if not worse for an unborn child and yourself as first hand smoke is.
Next, another cause to why tobacco is harmful, is because some mothers smoke during pregnancy. When mothers smoke while pregnant, it can cause life threatening issues for their child. A mother that smokes is much more likely to give birth to a child with defects. Congenital heart disease is one of the most popular effects (Banschbach 349). This is a problem because it is not only putting the mother’s life in danger, but it is not giving a baby the chance to be healthy and free from defects; some of these defects could be entirely prevented by not smoking. Not only does smoking cause heart defects, but it also can cause a lack of oxygen and nutrition while the baby is in the womb (Banschbach 349). Banschbach, found that many babies whose mothers smoke, are “born too early, and have a low birth weight, making it more likely the baby will become sick or die” (349). While these examples are the main effects, babies can also suffer from simpler physical effects such as, a cleft lip or palate. Lastly, one of the most harmful effects to a child due to smoking is the chance of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Banschbach 349).
Smoking while pregnant has severe consequences that affect the baby. Pregnant women who smoke causes infertility, preterm delivery, stillbirth and various other diseases that causes reproductive and early child hood effects. (CDC, 2013) This is imperative people realize that smoking can not only be deadly to you, but also children.
