Since the beginning the United States the its form of government has been considered unique. While it is different from many other forms of government it gives each U.S. citizen the ability to speak their mind on who they believe their country should be governed by and what laws they should be governed under. In making these decisions citizens generally take a side, Republican or Democrat. Republican and Democratic parties are two of the nations oldest political parties however, when they originated the Republican party was the Democratic party that we have today and the Democratic party was the Conservative party we have today. To put that in simpler terms, the Democratic party were the Confederates in the civil war while the Republican party was the Union. Democrats of that time favored a limited government, supported the idea of manifest destiny, and fought for the continuation of slavery whereas the Republican party of that time opposed slavery, favored government policies such as nation currency, high tariffs, or increased funding on the university system. The switch to the parties we know today is said to have happened gradually between 1872. While the party system today is flipped from the original Democratic and Republican parties it still flows from historic roots but the reasoning’s and demographics behind who identifies as Liberal and who identifies as Conservative has advanced.
