Diabetes one of the most well-known diseases is a metabolic disease in which the body cannot produce insulin causing elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Insulin is a hormone that is very influential in the way the body changes food into energy, and is very important when it comes to treating or controlling the disease. Diabetes consists of two types, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. One is more lethal than the other, while the other requires less treatments of insulin. Diabetes is a very complex topic, it ranges from two types and its origins go way back in time. It is a disease that throughout time there have been different ways to diagnose it and have also been different ways to treat it. Since many other conditions are also related to …show more content…
Fun fact, according to this same book, “one ancient way to diagnose diabetes was to pour urine down an anthill. If the ants swarmed over the anthill, which obviously contained sugar, and the patient was ruled to have diabetes” (42). In the 2nd century A.D., Greek physician Aretaeus was the person who named the disease “diabetes”. Aretaeus described Diabetes as, “a dreadful affliction, not very frequent among men, being a melting down of the flesh and limbs into urine. The patients never stop making water and the flow is incessant, like the opening of aqueducts. Life is short, unpleasant painful, thirst unquenchable, drinking excessive, and disproportionate to the large quantity of urine is passed… the patients are affected by nausea, restlessness and burning thirst, and within a short time they expire” (44). Early physicians were able to identify signs of diabetes, but weren’t able to find a way to properly treat it. Medieval physicians also thought that people living in hot climates would more likely get diabetes, which is wrong. Then during the 16th century Swiss Physician Paracelsus, came up with an idea that diabetes was cause by a salt imbalance. However, was proven wrong by 17th century scientist Thomas Willis, who proved that sugar caused diabetes not salt. To determine this he tasted some of his diabetic patient’s urine and noticed that it was sweet instead of salty. Then later on in
Diabetes can be defined as a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism. This disorder usually occurs in a person’s genes. This means that many people may have diabetes because someone in their family has had it in the past. Diabetes is characterized by the minimal production and usage of insulin. This results in an excess amount of sugar in the blood and urine. Some other side effects that may occur in a patient with diabetes is, excessive thirst, weight loss, and in some. In much more serious cases of diabetes, small blood vessels are destroyed leading to infections and gangrene, which results in amputation of limbs, and blindness. Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar. Blood sugar is also known
The name “diabetes mellitus” describes two striking symptoms of disease. The first part of the name, meaning a siphon or drain, seems
The first known diabetes symptoms was in 1552 B.C. , when an Egyptian physician named Hesy-Ra, documented the frequent urination as a symptom of a disease that also caused emaciation.( the state of being abnormally thin or weak ) Some ancient healers saw that ants were attracted to the urine of people who had diabetes. In 150 A.D. , a Greek physician named Arateus described what we call diabetes today as “ the melting down of flesh and limbs into urine.” The first ever diabetes treatment was prescribed exercise, mainly horseback riding.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease where an individual’s blood glucose level is higher than normal standards. Diabetes is a long term condition that causes not only primary issues related to the disease but secondary problems as well. Diabetes also known and referred to by healthcare professionals as diabetes mellitus, which is a phrase used to describe a group of metabolic diseases in which a person’s body does not produce insulin at all, or a person’s body does not use insulin properly, which is called insulin resistance. Type I Diabetes also known as juvenile diabetes is when the body does not produce insulin, approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type I. Type 2 diabetes is when the body does not use insulin properly and approximately 90% of all documented cases worldwide is of this type. (American Diabetes Association, 2014) All types of diabetes can be treated, type I has no known cure however there have been some cases where
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce enough insulin, a hormone needed to convert the sugars and starches that we eat into energy needed for daily life. The cause of the disease is a mystery, but genetics and environment seem to play major roles. There are two kinds of Diabetes, Diabetes Insipidus and the more common Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes Insipidus is a rare disease caused by a deficiency of vasopressin, a hormone of the posterior pituitary gland that
Diabetes mellitus, is the fancy way to say diabetes but many people referred it as diabetes. Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases which can cause you to have high blood sugar levels over a long period. The two main types of diabetes are type 1 and type 2. Type 1 results from the pancreas's failure to produce enough insulin. This form was previously referred to as "insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus" or "juvenile diabetes". The cause is unknown. Type 2 begins with insulin resistance, a condition in which the cells fail to respond to insulin properly. There is no known preventive for type 1 diabetes, Or Type 2 diabetes which accounts for 85-90% of all cases can often be prevented or delayed by maintaining a normal body weight, engaging
Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body turns food into energy (sugar). Type 2 diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, and the statistics continue to grow with no change in site, and is a major cause of cardiovascular disease.
Diabetes is a life long medical condition that is due to the body not producing enough insulin to control the sugars that are in the body.
Diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus) is an unremitting disease where in the glucose in the blood is too high. Blood glucose level, or commonly known as the ‘blood sugar level’, are normally regulated by the hormone insulin that is made by the pancreas. Diabetes takes place when a problem in the hormone happens and how the body works. There are different types of diabetes – Type 1, Type 2, Impaired Glucose Metabolism, Gestational Diabetes and the Secondary Diabetes, but the two main
Diabetes has being around for many centuries and it’s still a current problem in our society. There is two types of diabetes type I and type II. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease and the usual treatment is insulin. With type I diabetes the pancreas doesn’t produce insulin a hormone that is necessary for the body; it’s important since it acts like a taxi because it facilitates the ride of sugar (glucose). Glucose is important to the cells because they rely on glucose for energy. Insulin helps the body to balance the glucose levels: by not letting the body become hyperglycemic (high sugar levels) or
Diabetes is a chronic disease. It happens when a person has high blood glucose (sugar), either because insulin production is insufficient, or because the body's cells do not respond well to insulin, or both. Diabetes needs continuing medical care, continuing patient self-management and support, to reduce the risk of long-term disability and prevent complications. There are three types of diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes and Gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused when body does not produce insulin. Patients with this type of diabetes should take insulin injections for the rest of their life, guarantee proper blood-glucose levels by regular blood tests and following a special diet and exercises. In Type 2 Diabetes, cells do
What is Diabetes? Diabetes affects approximately 6% of Americans, 17 million people, and alarmingly 5.9 million of them are unaware that they have this chronic disease. Diabetes is a disease that is classified into two central types, type 1 and type 2. The disease results in the body being incapable of producing enough insulin and also causes an inability to use the insulin that has produced. Type 1 diabetes is considered to be an autoimmune disease that has the ability to destroy the facility of the pancreas to produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a more complex disease that is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels which causes the body to produce but causes an inability to properly use what has been produced. Although millions of Americans suffer from this chronic disease, which can immerge in early childhood with the little-known cause of the disease, it is believed that diabetes is triggered by poor diet, exercise, obesity and inherited through genetics. Diabetes is a very manageable disease when it detected early but left untreated and managed it can possibly lead to death. A poor diet and obesity are a few of the leading causes of type 2 diabetes, which is the result of nutritional deficiencies. An individual with a body mass index of thirty or more increases their chances of developing type 2 diabetes. Currently in America, younger children have a greater risk factor of developing type 2 diabetes due to long term diets that consists of high saturated
Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar)1 . In 2011 The American Diabetes Association repoted a 25.8 million people in America living with diabetes 2. Diabetes is a illness that can be caused by the body not being able to produce enough insulin and or cells in the body not responding adequately to the insulin provided. Insulin which is produced by the pancrease, regulates the amount of glucose (which provieds energy to all cells) in the blood.
Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a chronic, lifelong condition that affects your body 's ability to use the energy found in food. There are
Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body produces too little insulin (Type One Diabetes) or can’t use available insulin efficiently ( Type Two Diabetes). Insulin is a hormone vital to helping the body use digested food for growth and energy.
