Dietary Supplements: The Various Definitions and Issues
Associated with the Use and Recommendation of Use In a study done by the Nutrition Journal entitled “Dietitians use and recommend dietary supplements: report of a survey” in 2012 it details the results, background, and process of a study in which Dietary Supplements were determined to be used and/or recommended by Dietitians. The concluding data represents Dietary Supplements purposes in supplementing Dietitian’s personal and clientele health: “74% of the dietitians surveyed said they were regular users of dietary supplements, while 22% said they used dietary supplements occasionally or seasonally. The primary reasons for using dietary supplements were for bone health (58%), overall health and wellness (53%), and to fill nutrient gaps (42%). When asked if they “ever recommend dietary supplements to clients,” 97% of the respondents said they did. The primary reasons were for bone health (70%), to fill nutrient gaps (67%), and overall health and wellness (49%). Eighty-seven percent of the dietitians agreed with the statement, “There are gaps in clients’ diets that could effectively be addressed with dietary supplements.” The dietitians surveyed said they followed healthy habits including eating a balanced diet (96%), managing stress (92%), visiting their own healthcare professional regularly (86%),

The relationship between diet and chronic disease made the federal government to issue dietary guidelines for Americans since1980 and publication of dietary guidelines were made every five years. The dietary guideline is in response to the public’s desire for authoritative, consistent guidelines on diet and health (Slavin, 2012). One of the reasons for developing the dietary guidelines was to provide science based advice for two years old or older to help prevent chronic diseases and promote health. Another reason why dietary guidelines were created was to lay a good “foundation for federal nutrition programs and nutrition education programs and serve as a basis for research gaps and priorities” (Slavin, 2012). Also, the government wants to make sure the

An increasing number of people are using products to enhance their diets. A recent estimate indicates, “Americans are spending some $6 billion annually on nutritional supplements, and the market is growing by 20% every year” (Zahn, 1997). Of these supplements, the increase in herbal remedy use is most dramatic. Zahn holds that the increase can be attributed to the widely held belief that herbal substances are healthy and harmless because of their natural origins (1997). Unfortunately, research on these supplements, herbal or otherwise, has not transmitted to the public as quickly as the diet enhancers themselves. The phenomenon leaves many consumers misguided by skewed advertising and
This paper will focus on some important nutrients that are important for general health: fiber and protein. My personal daily intake will be analyzed to determine what foods are providing the right type of proteins and fiber, and how food consumption might be adjusted to provide for a healthier nutrient intake. It is important to state at the outset that the nutrient intake that is being used for this analysis is only for a one-day period. However, it will provide some insight into my eating habits and how those habits might be improved from a scientific standpoint.
During this week, I Edgar Burgos had to conduct a food intake for 3 consecutive days. This paper will describe my nutritional endeavor for the past three days. I will provide different aspects of my nutritional needs and an in depth analysis on how proteins fats carbohydrates and fiber take part in my everyday diet and what are these functions. This is intended to broaden my views of a healthy lifestyle, and how to achieve it through a variety of food groups.
Throughout the years we have been prescribed with regular medications for whatever illness we have and also in using supplements for our weight loss program. We at times neglect or willfully forget the side effects and risks we are faced off with regular medications. This is the reason why a lot of herbal supplement companies are increasing in popularity because of the supplements they are recommending in exchange of the regular medications. There are more and more people being aware of these supplements performance. They prevent the onset of a possible health problem and also increase performance with considering very little complications or side effects.

Dietary supplements are becoming more and more widely used. Whether it be for sport performance, herbal, or just a vitamin, many are being used and misused. People do not understand how dietary supplements are regulated and what the pros and cons are.

Scientists strive for objectivity, a value that requires some elimination of variation in seeking to find the one truth. These basic foundational rules of science limit what can and cannot be recommended by the disciplines that science informs. Dietitians are also bound to the same rules of scientific understanding by the principal of evidence-based practice, and can only provide clients with what the science says at this time. Unfortunately, it is impossible to reconcile the understandings science currently has regarding the human body with optimal dietary recommendations.
Advice to a patient about dietary supplements, generally speaking, would be try and get the nutrients you need by a healthy and balanced diet. An example would be, instead of taking a magnesium supplement one could include or increase the amount of dark green leafy vegetables, nuts and beans as these foods are high in magnesium. The best source of a vitamin or mineral is ingesting it in its most natural, most raw form and letting our bodies break it down and use it as it was meant by nature.
