Do the Benefits of Social Media Outweigh the Risks?
There is much controversy over whether or not the risks of social media outweigh the benefits. While it can be used for numerous types of criminal activity, it can also be used to stop these crimes and other criminals. Just a few examples of occurrences that can negatively affect or even inflict physical harm on people through social media usage include things such as cyberbullying, sexual predation, robbery, etc. These things can permanently affect people’s lives or even, in some cases, kill them. Given these risks, there are also many strategies the police utilize to catch criminals, which would not be possible without social media. So, which is it? Does the amount of predators or cyberbullies online and on social media give ample enough reason to consider social media more help than harm, or are there enough good things that result from social media usage to consider social media a valuable asset? Social media can be used as a tool in law enforcement, but there are too many negative factors, like crime and cyberbullying, that were directly caused by social media to consider it much of an asset.
Social media has a huge effect on the way this generation of teens thinks and behaves (Kite, et al.). It can be an outlet of hate, a place for this generation to vent about their problems and ridicule others anonymously. This is called cyberbullying. It is considered
Social media, as previously mentioned can either have a positive or negative impact to the community. It is a wonderful resource for adults and children. It is used as an instant communication tool. Unfortunately, it can have a damaging effect to the community when use inappropriately. Back in the old days, bullying behavior occurs face-to-face. Now, with the advancement of technology, bullying can be done easily and instantly through the use of computer, cellphones and other electronic devices. People can share photos and videos through social media that can contain violence and sex creating a negative impact to the society, as kids and adult can involve themselves in crime related activities. However, when utilized by responsible people, social media can be used to educate and promote a peaceful, safe environment. People can also share news and information through social media which gives them awareness on what’s happening around them.
As the drastic increase of social media networks has increased, so too has the cyberbullying prevalence. Merriam-Webster defines cyberbullying as the electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person often done anonymously. Kassandra Gahagan and her fellow colleagues studied cyberbullying among students and its outcomes. Studies show higher rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors with victims of cyberbullying, along with higher rates of depression, anxiety and paranoia (Gahagan, Vaterlaus & Frost, 2015). While cyberbullying can be both intentional or unintentional, it is a negative process which effects the victim. This includes comments, posts without consent and messages. The study conducted sought to determine the prevalence of cyberbullying among young adults and the negative outcomes through asking three questions.
Today, it is very easy to obtain information of any kind. Thanks to the convergence and development of technology. “The Internet”, which today is one of the easiest ways to obtain quick information without allot of effort. There are millions of people from around the world that use the Internet as a tool to communicate, search, and find information on about any topic imaginable. (Aynur, Nejat, 2015). In this Essay on Social Media, we will be discussing the advantages and disadvantages of easily obtainable information, the advantages and disadvantages of social media, and importantly how knowing of these things can alter how a person might use social media, as well as the credibility issues that arise from the information on
There are many opinions about social media and how it is used. There are a lot of people that would agree that social media sites have a negative impact on society. Even though sites like twitter allow everyone to connect to anyone in the entire world, police have found that social media has helped solve crimes around the world ranging from petty theft to murder to cybercrimes. The way we use social media has changed over the years. At the beginning social media was just a way to stay connected with friends and see what they were up too. Now social media is the tool that police use to help capture criminals. They use it as a tool because of how wide spread social media is.
Today, social media is a term that one and all recognizes. Even the furthermost areas of the world have at least caught a whiff of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and are more than likely using them on a consistent basis. Unfortunately, the creation of social media has also led to the making of cyberbullying and cyberbullies, people who target individuals over a social media platform. Cyberbully is a word that scares most parents who have grade school, middle school or high school aged children and is taught to be avoided in elementaries, junior highs and high schools around the world.
Social media is an internet platform that allows an individual to share information, post photos, and express themselves freely. With the evolvement of time, it has become popular amongst people of all age groups. It is useful in the way that it allows the sharing of information and messaging between people of all over the world. Examples of social media boards include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. At first it may seem harmless, however, the oversharing of personal information may lead to cyberbullying. The term cyberbullying refers to the usage of internet boards to intimidate, threat, and harm individuals. It is roughly estimated that about a third of the population have experienced this type of negativity at one point or another. The downside of excessive social media use is that once information is out on the web, it is spread quickly and then becomes difficult to get rid of. Cyberbullying has become a very big issue today in society and it is something that should not be taken lightly when considering penalty. Negative outcomes of cyberbullying include things such as social anxiety, privacy issues, and even suicide.
As social media gets popular and provides an easier access to the Internet, the more difficult it gets to control people’s outburst. Many people wonder, “What is the difference between traditional bullying and cyber bullying?” “What is cyber bullying?” Traditional bullying is when a person is bullying another person face to face. However, with cyber bullying is different. Cyber bullying occurs through out social media and on the Internet. Once in a while I overhear a person questioning about how teens and young kids use social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and etc. Social media has its pros and cons, pro because it gives us an easier to access to sources when we need it right away. Social media also has its cons because social media is very powerful tools, which can be taken advantage of like for example, making shanky comments on pictures or post inappropriate information about another person. Therefore, how fast is cyberbullying expending? How can we use the Internet in a positive way? Two great essays by Jesse Fleck, Leigh Johnson-Migalski, Jemica Carter, and Feleta Wilson explain these reasoning’s.
In today’s century social media is the main way to communicate with people with people all over the world. It has become very popular... even more popular than a text or video message. Social media is a computer technology that facilitates the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via communities and networks. The variety of social media services that are currently available can help benefit businesses, introduce an event, or even help you find a friend, family member, or long lost soulmate. Some social sites even help you find love. However, there are many positive things that can come out social media but there are many negatives too.
The use of Social media has flourished to a great extent in today’s world. It has played a significant role by providing a platform for people to connect, communicate, share ideas and so on. Facebook, twitter, Instagram are some of the most common social networking sites that usually intrigue us. The day is not far where everyone in this world will have a Facebook account one day. We obviously know the benefits are derived from the use of social media, but have you ever thought that it can also lead you to a serious threat? I personally liked social networking until I found that it advocates laziness by wasting my precious time. Indeed, I was just thinking about this today and how awesome it was a decade ago when friends would call me just to say hi. Nowadays, it seems everything that is posted is like my junk mail full of advertisements and borrowed quotes. I came to realize that Social Media is actually not secure these days. You’ll be surprised how the evolution of technology has had an adverse effect on this growing society. So, is social media really a blessing?
One negative effect that social media has on teens is cyberbullying (Henkin). Teens bully others about simple things such as their looks and their relationships. They even start to judge their lifestyle. They are bullying others that are younger or older than they are. There is a big difference with teens on social media and in reality. Cyberbullying can be seen anywhere. On social media it gives them the free time to do and say what they want to others because they won’t do any of that in reality. Cyberbullying is the leading
Social media is a slippery platform of communication with others around the world and has an almost equal number of disadvantages to advantages. It allows one to release sensitive information readily available to be viewed by almost anyone. As in the case of my subordinate posting negative things about me online, I should not have accepted his/her request in the first place, for a couple of reasons. When you are the boss of someone, it is best to keep your business and personal relationship separate. If others see that you have accepted that employee as a friend, it could easily be perceived as favoritism. Not only that, now that you have access to their page, you could see something you don’t like (such as that post) and hold it against them while in the workplace. This could lead to a personal vendetta, which could likely cost them their job if they don’t tread lightly.
Social media is one of the biggest common use of technology teenagers use daily. To understand what this is , “Cyberbullying
Social media is now a nationwide concept, ask any child, teen, and even an adult to name off three social media websites and they wouldn’t even have to think about it. Most common answers would be: Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. These are all sites where a person can communicate with others and make cyber threats. What is cyberbullying/threats? “Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites.”(Aspa) Today’s world is obsessed with new trends in technology and what new social media site will be the next new big thing. As technology and social sites continue to gain popularity the threat of violence will continue to increase as well. Many believe the only way to prevent this is if law enforcement imposes punishments on those who engage in cyberbullying. In contrast, others argue that laws will take away our freedom of speech rights which are protected by the First Amendment.
Social media is a mounting crime and danger stopper. With everyone using social media sources, such as, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter, peoples cameras are always up and ready to record entertainment. With the media up and significantly going daily, the chances of someone catching a robber, mugger, convict, or criminal rises, because people post everything. Law enforcement is even using social media to their benefit now, posting, and sending danger, and warning signals, before natural disasters, when convicts are on the loose, and even when people get kidnapped. We should stop thinking of social media as a drawback, and use it to our advantage, because everything is at our
