I believe the book The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was told by Utterson. He was the right person to tell the story. When Utterson tells them where the murderer can be located i would of not said anything. In a situation i would like to hear why did that happend but most likely i would of turn him in.
I realized that this story is much more psychological therefore much scarier. In the novel Dr. Jekyll looks at Mr. Hyde as his means of freedom and enjoys the evil that it says is in himself. The story is told in chapters that are follow Mr. Utterson knowledge of his old friend Dr. Jekyll. The story only give us a piece of the puzzle and we are left with what Mr. Utterson expresses. At the end of the novel is Dr. Jekyll full story.
Now this story does not follow Dr. Jekyll through his journey of creating his evil alter ego. Moreover he is not even the first initial character that we are introduced to in the novella; we are first introduced to a man named Mr. Utterson. He is actually the lawyer of Dr. Jekyll and he takes an interest in his newfound protégé who is referred to as Mr. Hyde. His negative feelings towards Mr. Hyde, beget a personal investigation into his life and his connection to Dr. Jekyll. Sadly he does not realize the truth behind the mystery of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde till the end of the novella, where he finally discovers the secret from reading Dr. Jekyll’s last words written in a letter addressed to him after Dr. Jekyll’s untimely death.
Just as the emotions between a parent and toddler can change any second from loving to embarrassed and angry, the two main characters in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, struggle through a family-like relationship. Throughout the novel, the relationship between Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde changes from a close, family-like relationship to one of hatred toward the end of the book. Changes in the relationship between Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde can be seen in: observations by Mr. Utterson, Dr. Jekyll’s state of mind before and after the murder of Sir Danvers Carew, and Dr. Jekyll’s confession.
Jekyll talks about the years before the creation of the potion that transforms him into Hyde. He summarises his finding of the dual nature, human beings are half good and half evil. Jekyll’s goal in his experiments is to separate two opposite elements, creating a person with only good characteristics and a being of only evil. He does this because he wants to free his good side from dark urges. He fails this experiment, in fact he only manages to create a whole evil person ‘Mr Hyde’. In the letter, Jekyll says ‘I learned to recognise the thorough and primitive duality of man . . . if I could rightly be said to be either, it was only because I was radically both.’ The events of the novel inform the reader that the dark side (Hyde) is much stronger than the rest of Jekyll, this is why Hyde is able to take over Jekyll. This letter is really important for the reader so that the whole novel is understood. A lot of horror is created and it is all quiet in the reader's mind. The reader feels horrified by the way in which Jekyll seems to love and care for Hyde. Jekyll’s words make the reader angry that a man who was so good could enjoy becoming so
“Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde” is a gothic novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson that was first published in 1886. It’s about a lawyer from London named G.J. Utterson who explores strange events that involves his old friend Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde. The novel’s influence on language is extraordinary, with the phrase “Jekyll and Hyde” coming to the meaning of a person of diversity in moral character from one situation to the next (French literature).
The key ideas in chapter 1 of ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr
Utterson saw Jekyll since they were good friends he saw that this person in front of him was not his good friend. Dr.jekyll the good the kind and Hyde is turning him into a dark, and evil person. All these things that are happening to Jekyll is making his body sick, deadly looking. “This master Hyde, if he were studied though he , must have secrets of his own:black secrets, by the look of him; secrets compared to which poor Jekylls worst would be like sunshine.” (18 Stevenson) This quote shows that Dr.jekyll is good, compared to Hyde he is good. Even Dr.Jekyll’s Darkest deepest secrets compared to Hyde’s secrets Jekyll’s look like sunshine, and cant even compare to Hyde’s secrets. “Now that that evil influence had been withdrawn, a new life began for Dr.Jekyll.”(31 Stevenson)This Quote shows that Mr. Hyde is evil. Hyde’s evil influence on Dr.jekyll who was a good man and Mr.Hyde was turning him into something evil. With his evil influence gone Dr.Jekyll can be himself; a good man.”It turns me to think of this creature stealing like a thief to harry’s bedside; poor harry what a wakening!” (18 Stevenson)This quote shows that everyone had a bad feeling about Mr.Hyde, Utterson knew that Hyde was bad, and evil. Utterson hated to see his oldest friend Dr.jekyll get his life ruined by a a thief and and
Being a purveyor of the law, he is in the position to oversee many "downgoing men" (Stevenson 1) and functions as an inspirational example of the refinement attributed to the upper class of which he is a member. However, Mr. Utterson is troubled when Dr. Jekyll, also a member of the upper class, wills his property to a then-unknown Mr. Hyde. He is "offended ...both as a lawyer and as a lover of the sane and customary sides of life, to whom the fanciful is immodest" (6). Utterson does not, however, pry into the affair until the inheritor is described as monstrous. This further demonstrates his sense of social obligation. Before hearing the story that Mr. Hyde trampled a young girl, Utterson is able to restrain his first impression of Dr. Jekyll's decree; but upon hearing the reputable account, he can no longer ignore his sense of social and moral obligation to make things right. Utterson suspects that blackmail is the reason for the atypical will, and whether for the purpose of legitimizing the monstrous story or having a primary account of Mr. Hyde, he seeks out this character before confronting his client, Dr. Jekyll.
This novel can be interpreted in many different ways; from the duality of human nature to the loss of control of many things, such as loss of judgment and moral control which plays a huge role in this novel. Dr. Jekyll has the power to have two personalities because of this concoction, and he is fully capable of control his evil side but I don’t believe he wants to completely at first. Yes there is a clear difference between the two characters Dr. Jekyll obviously has a better demeanor and doesn’t commit horrid acts when he is playing this person; however, they are one person. (NCBI) This novel is interesting in the fact the main character transformation is clearly depicted Dr. Jekyll is described as this tall handsome, middle-aged, successful man while Mr. Hyde is described as short, fat, angry man who no one liked. Jekyll and Hyde communicate by writing letters or notes to one another which helps predict what is going to happen next when the next

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, criminals or the mentally insane? In the novella “The Strange Cases of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“, by Robert Louis Stevenson; where in his writing there are examples of both Romanticism and Modernism. The Romanticism literary movement happened around 1800-1850 and is typically consisting of glorifications of horror, terror, and awe. After reading and watching the first half of , The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, By Robert Louis Stevenson, there was a depiction of the same storyline, but includes many differences of how the novella tells the story versus how the film tells the story. In the first scene of the film their are people crying and the movement of the film is in slow motion, which in contrast sets the mood for the film considering that the individuals crying are crying because of the death of Dr. Jekyll. After the death of Dr. Jekyll, the narration of both the film and the novella were told through the views of Mr. Utterson, who was Dr. Jekyll’s lawyer. Throughout the novella, Mr. Hyde, who once was Dr. Jekyll act’s more violent, whereas in the film
In “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” the reader follows the life of Mr. Utterson a lawyer from London. After a conversation with his cousin, Utterson becomes curious on how his friend, Dr. Jekyll, knows the nasty individual known as Edward. Hyde. Mr. Utterson is also Dr. Jekyll’s lawyer and he is concerned with the doctor’s new will. Utterson quickly bring up the subject, “I have been wanting to speak to you, Jekyll, began the latter. You know that will of yours? A close observer might have gathered that topic was distasteful; but the doctor carried it off gaily” (Page 1686). Dr. Jekyll insisted on leaving the matter alone, “... I will tell you one thing: the moment I choose, I can be rid of Mr. Hyde…I beg of you to let it sleep” (Page 1687). As the story progresses, Dr. Jekyll becomes more isolated and is seen less
The name of this book is the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson. As i start to read this book I have come to realize that this book is going to involve lawyers and a lot of discussion between a lawyer and Mr. Hyde. This book to me sounds like it takes place somewhere near the 1960s maybe a little but later. I have a good feeling about this book.
Hyde. In this way, Jekyll becomes monstrous himself as he wishes to pass on his evil parts into another person. Jekyll’s concoction is a threat to cultural morals and values as it enables someone to set evil free. Consequently, there is no obligation and interest in adhering to any moral standards. In the end, he is a split person, one-half is represented by Jekyll and the other one by Hyde. Stevenson used the different standpoints in the story to create the feeling that Jekyll and Hyde are two different individuals: “‘The Master Hyde, if he were studied,’ thought he [Utterson],’must have secrets of his own; black secrets, by the look of him; secrets compared to which poor Jekyll’s worst would be like sunshine.” (Stevenson 22). Thus, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a story where the line blurs. As Hyde and Jekyll are one and the same person, the reader realises that they together are both moral and immoral and both good and
The main themes in the story is the different perspectives Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde told the story from a third person point of view of Mr. Utterson, Who is of a higher class and is male who’s part in the story looks more limited than to the one of Mary Reilly’s. He was only on the outside looking in But Mary was closer to Jekyll from her perspective. From Utterson’s Perspective the reader was left un aware of Jekyll’s secret.
