Homework #11 Drylands in the western United States are subject to generally low soil moisture content. Understanding the hydrology and moisture levels of these soils is crucial to understanding dryland ecosystems (Newman et al. 1997 Journal of Hydrology; Wythers et al. 1999 SSSAJ). Soil water is lost through bare-soil evaporation and transpiration (Wythers et al. 1999 SSSAJ). Commonly, these processes have been linked together as evapotranspiration; distinguishing between the two is a difficult yet important task (Villegas et al. 2010 Journal of Arid Environments; Wythers et al. 1999 SSSAJ). One way to better estimate evapotranspiration and understand the water budget in drylands is to determine the processes driving soil evaporation. It
Long ago, the middle of the North American continent was a treeless prairie covered by tall grasses and roaming buffalo. When European settlers came, they called this area the Great American Desert. Today, this "desert" is covered with fields of wheat, corn, and alfalfa made possible by center-pivot irrigation. My grandfather used to sell center-pivot systems and when my family drove to my grandparent's home in Nebraska, we would count how many "sprinklers" were watering each section of land. At the time, I didn't know that this water was being pumped from somethng called the Ogallala Aquifer, a huge underground water supply. Throughout the years, this aquifer has made the Great American Desert one of the best farming
When the Sioux migrated to the Great Plains area, they most certainly came across the the Badlands in their discovery. The name “Badlands” is derived from the Lakota phrase makȟóšiča, meaning Land of Bad Spirits. Today, some Lakota believe that the Badlands are a place to be avoided because it is where bad spirits exist. This paper will discuss the geographic location, geological formation, Lakota legends, reasons the site is visited, time or seasons to visit and Lakota stargazing associated with the site. When applicable, Lakota words will be provided.
6. Describe several adaptations that enable plants to reduce water loss from their leaves. Include both structural and physiological adaptations.
Warmer temperatures in Arizona in river has been leading to more evaporation. The water that is being used by plants and soil experience evapotranspiration which has accounted for a loss of at least half-million acre-feet of water annually.
Drought condition exists throughout most of Arizona. Variable amounts of rainfall throughout last year’s where was significantly below the normal with surface water flows, reservoir levels, and well water pumping levels are at some of their lowest ever recorded all of that act as indication of drought occurrence. Drought is a normal recurring feature of climate, not a rare or random event. Climate influence water quality throughout temperature, precipitation, and wind by affecting the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of water. For instance, temperature fluctuation results in more stress on aquatic organism within water body, in the same way wind fluctuation has a direct effect on evaporation rate. Municipal water providers in Flagstaff, Williams, Mayer, Pine, Strawberry, and in areas near Sierra Vista, Sonoita, and Picacho have suffered from some potable
In an arid land, there is less precipitation than the potential evaporation which is not the case in humid regions.
On average, the temperate deciduous woodland should receive around 750-1500mm of rain per year. If this number is greatly exceeded, then the soil will become saturated and the area will flood, suffocating the plants as they do not have access to sufficient oxygen and carbon dioxide. On the contrary, if there is not enough rainfall then the plants will also die because they do not have access to a plentiful supply of minerals that the water contains such as nitrogen and magnesium.
What does one think of when given the phrase “Wild West?” Is it cowboys and Indians? Bar fights? John Wayne perhaps? Despite various answers, numerous people can agree that the wild west was an eventful and important time period. “The American west had all sorts of people including pioneers, business people, scouts, lawmen, outlaws, gangs, gunslingers, and cowboys. Most of these people had one thing in common… they were looking for an opportunity and they weren’t afraid of adventure.” These people settled in Wild West towns and changed the land, which played a big role in the development of modern-day society. Sacramento, a major historic town, stands as a notable example of
The usage of land in the Mojave Desert is negatively affecting the desert as a whole. “Some key species are indicators of the overall ecological health of the region … most of these species continue to decline.” was stated by the mojave defenders. Certain animals such as the Mojave ground squirrel represent the health of our environment, and certain groups are inefficiently using the land of the Mojave Desert. Ultimately, this is leading to a decline in these populations.
Arizona’s extended drought is forcing water companies to take water from non-replenishable aquifers which take centuries to refill. Central Arizona needs to take drastic measures to reduce the amount of water consumed to ensure less water is drained from aquifers. A crucial measure which needs to be implemented is water conservation; some of these necessary water conservation methods include metering and increasing the water efficiency in agriculture.
In the Desert Southwest, we are blessed with two different blooming seasons, spring and fall. Roses don't really enjoy the heat of summer and go into summer dormancy, meaning that they just exist and don't grow or bloom significantly. However, with the days growing shorter and summer temperatures begin to cool, it is time to lightly prune your rose bushes, which will stimulate new growth. In September, begin by pruning back about 1/4 of the total size of the rose bush, (this isn't the major pruning that occurs in the winter). As always, prune back to an outward facing bud at an angle of 45 degrees. Seal any pruning cuts larger than the diameter of a pencil with Elmer's glue to prevent borers. It is also time to fertilize your roses in preparation
The life among the Eastern Woodlands was extremely different and interesting. It is very clear that they definitely had religious values. They had a church, or as classified, a place of assembly for prayer; along with prayer, they had dance ceremonies and a ceremonial fire. I can infer that they believed in a Great Spirit, which coordinated the world. I suspect that this world not only accommodated them, but also the plants and other surroundings. The corn is guarded, which definitely expresses how much it was valued in their society. There does not seem to be any animals present in the picture, which means they may have been used for food or clothing.
The impacts of climate change on drought attributes continue to be debated in the scientific community, even as multiple regions, globally and in the United States, experience severe droughts. Drought is a recurrent problem in many parts of the Conterminous United States (CONUS). Heat waves and droughts alone caused damage of around $210.1 billion dollars during 1980-2011 in the United States and ranked second highest after tropical cyclones in terms of financial losses (Smith and Katz, 2013). Droughts are difficult to characterize because of complex interdependence among various drought attributes, such as severity (magnitude), duration, spatial coverage, frequency and persistence. In a design context, assumption of complete independence or
