Studies say that Edgar Allan Poe was the father of gothic literature. As an American writer and critic, he went through the struggles of living in poverty, having a drinking and gambling problem, and being judge based on his decisions. He was best known as an author of gothic fiction. His literature has still been used today and influenced many authors and poets till’ this modern day. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19,1809, in Boston, Massachusetts to two striving actors, David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Poe. Some studies say that both of his parents died when he was young (May 2079). Other studies say that Poe’s father forsaken his family after they moved to New York (Loveday 1). He had an older brother, William Henry Leonard, and a younger sister, Rosalie Poe. When their mother died, they were orphaned and taken in by different family and friends. Rosalie was adopted by William and Jane Scott Mackenzie, Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, and William was sent to live with their paternal grandparents (Sova 2).
From then on Poe lived in Richmond, Virginia for most of his life. He attended a nearby academy, which he passed classes with flying colors, until 1826. Some studies said that the reason Poe didn’t get along with John Allan was because of his infidelity to Frances Allan, who Poe loved dearly (Loveday 2).
