Embryonic Stem Cells and the Catholic Church

The Catholic Church and the practice and advancement in medical research have been debated many times over due to the ethics of some practices. Throughout the history of modern medicine, many practices have sparked debate on the nature of the medical practice and whether it is ethical. Many medical practices have directly contradicted the beliefs of Catholics and the Catholic Church. A current topic of debate is the use of embryonic stem cells which are mainly from aborted fetal tissue, which is used for medical research. This improvement in the field of medicine has been argued many times, mainly asking if the practice is ethical or not.
Embryonic stem cells have numerous and amazing uses. Stem cells are unspecialized cells with the ability to replicate and renew themselves. They have the ability to transform into many kinds of cell types within the human body. They divide and create a new cell, having the potential to infinitely replenish cells. There are two types of stem cells: embryonic and somatic. Embryonic stem cells are from a fetus and can become all cell types in the body. In my opinion using aborted fetal tissue for embryonic stem cell research is ethical. Even though my Catholic beliefs teach that life starts at conception I still have my own opinion. Human dignity is a term that states that because we are made in the image and likeness of God, we have value and worth. Though the fetus has a heartbeat, it has no human emotions or conscience. If you were to end what may have become a human to help a living human not suffer their entire life, what you have done was good.
