In Eric Liu's Piece ,“A Chinaman’s Chance: Reflections on the American Dream”, Liu argues that the American Dream does still exist for minorities. He claims that the Dream is not about claiming prosperity, but about seizing opportunity. He develops this claim by first utilizing anecdotes to get an emotional appeal from the audience. Then using diction to establish a logical argument and enrich the piece. And finally, using rhetorical questions to make the audience think deeply about the argument. Liu’s purpose is to convince the audience that the American Dream exists for minorities today. He also establishes a formal yet critical tone by incorporating strategic word choice and diction. “At a time like this, the retreat to one’s own kind is seen by more and more of my peers as an advance. And hat retreat has given rise again to the notion that there are essential and irreconcilable differences among the races” (413 Liu). Liu’s elaborate use of words are what really sway the people reading his argument. He describes the sociology of how people react to immigrants and how unjustified it is. By doing this, he portrays how similar everyone is to each other or how equal they are. Finally, rhetorical questions are the last devices Liu utilizes. “What do we ‘get’ for being American? And just as importantly, what do we owe?” (414 Liu). Liu outlines how this era’s race entitlement has hazed the American Dream. How when people expect something out of their country, they neglect their patriotic duties and therefore defeats the whole idea of the Dream. All things considered, Liu brings up some interesting and thoughtful points such as: minorities may have a harder time working for a living, but they still have the same opportunities as anyone else and that , over the past years, entitlement to one’s race has blurred the idea of the American Dream.
