In America, the land of the free, people believe that it’s the greatest place to be. And America would probably be what everyone believes, but it has a very serious problem that could eventually destroy the country as whole. America is built upon Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but it has a strong equality issue that has to be taken care of. Equality is a social contract in America and unfortunately it is a broken one. A social contract is an agreement amongst the members of a society, but equality is a serious issue. Equality poses the biggest problem to America simply because in any country the people make the country, and if the people can’t get along either internal conflicts occur, or people eventually leave. Throughout America everyone regardless of race, color, or sexual orientation has experienced inequality in some part of America. Words are exchanged, fists are thrown, and in serious cases lives are lost because people are racists to one another. Equality is a broken social contract in America that will eventually be its demise if not attended to.

America prides itself on being one of the most successful democratically governed counties. The idea of the American dream is that all citizens have equal civil liberties and a responsive government. However the effectiveness of democracy is being threatened by increasing inequality in the United States. “The dominant view holds that economic development and modernization are the key to the continued growth of democracy” (Snider and Faris 2001; United Nations, 2011). In the last decade especially the American Society has had significant moments of increasing equality. In 1960 the Civil Rights Movement changed how different races were viewed. Gender inequality has engulfed the United States and placed copious varying roles onto the male and female sexes. According to Leila Aboulela, Minaret, “All through life there were distinctions - toilets for men, toilets for women; clothes for men, clothes for women - then, at the end, the graves are identical.” Discrimination places women into different roles and takes away numerous privileges. However in America today after more than a century of struggles by dedicated activists who fought to alter these ideals and gain further rights, the perception of women in society and their contributions to society have been greatly transformed.

Why should gender determine how to live your life? Throughout my whole existence, I’ve been told to act and dress like a “girl” by most of my family. I never understood why it was such a huge deal, until I was much older. Gender expectations are still around today and they still continue to be affect the way men and women are treated. A man that acts within his own gender role is praised, but a woman is forced to stay in a certain limit within her role. Men and women shouldn 't let their gender define themselves and it should not pressure them to live up to a certain standard created by society.

Women have made many changes in the past in order to be at the same level as men both socially and economically. In the past, women were expected to stay home and take care of the kids while men went out to work. As women started to become more independent, they started going to school to achieve a better goal; to get a job and not rely on men. Now, having jobs and greater responsibilities encourages women to stand close to where men are in the workplace. Therefore, women are realizing that gender inequalities are very much still present, and the ultimate goal is to stand with men on this social and economic ladder.

Gender inequality or also known as gender stratification, is the unequal distribution of a society’s wealth, power, and privilege between females and males. (Scott and Schwartz, 2000).

To distinguish the extent to which social divisions in gender between male and females are socially constructed we first have to discuss the issue of stratification by gender (inequality) and the theories which surround it. This essay will distinguish the concepts of gender inequalities in unpaid labour and employment, the media, as well as briefly looking into violence. It is only recently that sociology has begun to explore the topic of gender. Before this, inequalities within society were based primarily on factors such as social class and status. This paper will discuss gender itself: what makes us who we are and how we are represented. It will also explore discrimination towards women throughout history, focusing mainly on women and the right to vote, inequalities between males and females in the work place and how gender is represented in the media.

This paper will analyse gender inequality, specifically focusing on the ‘gender wage gap’ in Australia. Over the past three decades, there has been clear policy developments that focus on women involvement in the economy and the workplace. In particularly, the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012, is the key legislation in place that aims to promote and improve gender equality within employment, including the issue of equal remuneration between women and men. Yet, as of 2017, statistics show that a gender wage gap is apparent, as there is a 15.3% difference between fulltime men and women earnings (Workplace Gender Equality Agency, 2017, p. 1). Wage inequality is both a social exclusion and a discrimination on the basis of gender, which are both concepts that are aimed to be avoided by presiding governments, however it is still occurring. From this analysis, it will be argued that the equality must end, and that employers should pay men and women the same salary for the same job. Firstly, a brief history will be provided, then relevant government policies will be discussed, and subsequently responses to these policies will be shared. The discussion part of this paper aims to view this social policy issue through the lenses of values and ideology, which will look at both a for and against intervention viewpoint with wage equality. However, concludingly equal opportunity is an objective of social policy which is why the wage gap in Australia must end.

In a society that preaches equality it is expected for equality to show in its culture and way of life. In America, despite claiming to be an equal nation, many aspects of inequality, including racial, economic, and gender inequality, can be seen. Like all types of inequality and stereotypes, the socialization process begins from infancy. Most people strive to teach equality but according to Introduction to Sociology, “Even when parents set gender equality as a goal, there may be underlying indications of inequality. For example, boys may be asked to take out the garbage and perform other tasks that require strength or toughness, while girls may be asked to fold laundry or perform duties that require neatness and care.” From things as small as this stem gender inequality. As this is true, in individual households, it exists in the country itself. Men and women are advertised as equals but the truth is that America’s attempt at an egalitarian society has yet to be achieved on a gender scale. This is the purpose for this assignment: to see if people are aware of the truth about gender inequality in this society or if they are blind to this fact and believe that complete exists within the country.

Gender equity issues in mathematics and science have been the focus of many educators and researchers for years. Women have often been denied an equal education in math and science for many reasons. Parents and teachers must realize this fact and change their habits wherever necessary. Girls must be given the same opportunity as boys from the beginning, particularly in math and science where girls tend to lag behind.
