North Carolina
“Esse Quam Videri” (“To Be Rather Than To Seem”) is the state motto for North Carolina, a very interesting state with a moderate climate, scenic beauty, a culture rich in history and the arts, and much more. It is located on the southeastern part of the U.S. and has a very diverse landscape. It has everything from warm beaches to snowy mountains. North Carolina covers 53,819 square miles with more than 300 miles of Atlantic coastline and has the highest mountain peaks east of the Rockies (“NC.gov.”).
Virginia colonists founded the Province of Carolina, an English colony in North America in 1653. The northern part and the southern part had different plans for the future and in 1729 the colony split into North and South Carolina. …show more content…

The government still consists of the same hierarchical network of local and state authorities that existed since the earliest days of the colony such as the Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer, etc. North Carolina’s 1868 Constitution, enacted after the Civil War, still serves as the basis of North Carolina’s state government, but has been amended many times over the last 136 years (North Carolina Government History). The government has an executive, judicial, and legislative branch. The executive branch consists of the governor who is the chief executive of the state and appoints department heads that make up the Cabinet. The judicial branch consists of an Appellate Division, a Superior Court Division, and a District Court Division. The legislative branch of the state is the North Carolina General Assembly. They enact statewide laws and establish rules and regulations governing the conduct of the people. Like the federal government and almost all the other states, North Carolina has a bicameral legislature, which consists of two houses: The Senate and the House of Representatives
