Colonialism occurs when a country takes control of other lands, regions, or territories outside of its borders by establishing the land as a colony. The ruling country usually does this through conquest, and the native people of the nation being taken over are often suppressed. Therefore, the concept of pros and cons change depending on whether the subject is on the oppressed or the oppressors.
The colonials pros for the colonized countries help the development of the country economically, politically, and culturally. The development of advanced plantations, farm equipment, and mines; the adjustment to a more modern economic system, such as banking; and the countries developed new industry contribute to the economy. Europe united rival tribes under a stable government, which provided a tolerance within the country. The concept of new technology they have never had before, such as modern communication, and modern transportation which developed railroad systems provided faster connection to the colonies. Finally, Missionaries built schools and hospitals so they had formal education and new medicines.
European colonization disrupted traditionalism, causing a number of cons for the colonials. The natives were forced to work to supply products.

A global economy emerged, interacting and integrating among the people of different nations, driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology. Machine made goods, money to invest, and new technology went to the whole world. European countries received new foods natural resources and cheap labor. All the money made in the colonized countries went to Europe, giving them a heavy profit. The main con the Europeans dealt was the constant presence of war. Civil wars within the colonizes caused deaths and economic hardship to the European people. The European countries themselves fought over land from
The Native Americans are in fact civilized, and this can be seen through their great strides in agricultural methodology and technology. Similar to Europeans, most Native Americans have graduated from hunting and gathering methods and have moved on to agriculture, as it is a more reliable source of food. As a result of the most recent expedition to the Americas, a group of pilgrims’ The Mayflower, a lot has been discovered about Native American agriculture. Although the Native Americans use primitive tools “made of stone, animal bone, and tortoise shell to grow crops of squash, pumpkins, gourds, sunflowers, and maize, their crops yielded far better results than Europeans’, and
On the other hand, the cons of imperialism were what benefited Europeans and infuriated the Asians, and Africans. Many individuals and groups resisted imperial rule. European tried many ways to westernize the subject people’s cultures. Many of the resources that were manufactured profited the Europeans rather than the Indians. A cash crop economy was established
The Europeans unquestionably benefited from colonization through their establishment of new economies, the spread of their religious beliefs, and through the emergence of a “new avenue for trade and population movement,” according to Adam Smith. The major European groups that settled in the Americas were the Spanish, the French
Imperialism was a time period in which more developed nations colonized less developed nations. The developed nations took advantage of the less developed nations resources, people, lands, and much more. Many countries lost their freedom and independence due to imperialism, however, they also received new technologies and innovations.
Have you ever wondered where why the many different countries in Europe came to America to explore and colonize? There were two main concepts that drew the Europeans to America: the excitement and profit of the "New World", and the past histories of their countries. The English, French, and Spanish each came to the Americas in search of a new beginning; a fresh start in which they could escape past torment and capture new wealth. However, each motive defined the character of each settlement.
This period of time directly led to other major events in history. Europe’s population was growing rapidly and the land wasn’t able to keep up with the people who needed its support. Colonization of the New World gave European countries land and resources that they needed. This did have a negative effect for the native people of the land, though. Natives didn’t have the same ideas of land ownership like the Europeans and between this and the advantages Europeans had over them, it created the modern geography that we know now.
Jamestown is the first permanent settlement in what is now the United States, Jamestown was founded in 1607. Those first colonists are what started it all, without their bravery to explore new lands the United States may not have turned out the same. Those colonists provided the first stepping stone to expand into more and more colonies. People believe that those first English colonists are what molded and continue to mold American character today. There are three reasons that make this true. If you are not lucky enough to be born wealthy you can always work hard to become wealthy. New beginnings are often found in the New World. Also, Religious freedom was first introduced by the leaders of those beginning colonies.
The abundance of raw materials found in Africa helped with technological progression in Europe, aiding in economic gain. Expansion of territory gave European nations a gain in power and prestige, as well as a sense of superior responsibility to civilize colonists. While European imperialism did have its own benefits, such as modernizing colonies with roads, schools, railroads, and hospitals, it also had a number of negative effects. While many lives were lost in the process, they also diminished colonies of their cultural identity, enforcing European values on natives. In spite of that, European imperialism holds a prominent significance in our society today all over the
ECONOMIC - by helping the European countries discover and colonize the New World, it indirectly helped / harmed their economies with the riches the poured into the exploration teams and any riches they reaped from their
Impacts of European expansion reached across the world and affected more than the expanding European powers and their colonies in the new world. Life in the world changed when these two cultures that were directly opposite of one another collided. Europe was filled with greed for resources and wealth, the Indigenous people living on these resources were living a simple sustainable life with next to no government or regulation. Once the new world was set up Europeans who ran these new territories called colonists today developed their own society and way of living and would end up revolting against the homeland.
“[New monarchs in Europe] built royal bureaucracies and standing armies and navies. [They] found support among the increasingly wealthy merchants…This alliance between commerce and political power was another important development that prepared the way for European expansion.” (Faragher 28-9) These alliances paved the way for the expeditions of Columbus, etc. French expeditions in the north opened up a fur trade between the Native Americans and the Europeans. “[T]he fur trade was essentially an unequal exchange, with furs selling in Europe for ten or twenty times what Indians received for them. [Further,] European epidemic disease soon followed in the wake of the traders, and violent warfare broke out between tribes over access to hunting grounds…Indians grew dependent upon European suppliers.” (Faragher 39-40) With France engaging the financial benefits of the northern section of the New World and Spanish and Portuguese trading in the central and southern sections, England saw fit to join the fray. “In a state paper written for the queen, the scholar Richard Hakluyt summarized the advantages that would come from the colonies: they would provide bases from which to raid the Spanish in the Caribbean, commercial outposts for the Indian market and English goods, and plantations for growing tropical products, freeing the nation from a reliance on the long-distance trade with
Although imperialism had several negative impacts on certain regions, it lead to the introduction of a better government system and improvement in technology. The efforts put in by Europe to colonize weak countries resulted in improvement of education and sanitation in the colonized countries. Africa specially gained a lot from Imperialism. Schools and hospitals were built,
On the positive side which led to development of industries in Asia and Africa. The various imperialist powers such as France set up industries in their colonies to make profits and thus paved the way for the industrialization of the colonies. The colonial powers established long lines of railways, built banking houses etc. in the colonies to fully exploit their resources. They also set up certain industries in these colonies to make quick profits and fully exploited the resources available there.this proved to be a huge business for the colonies and led to their industrialization. On the negative side, the imperialist powers exploited the colonies by importing raw materials at the cheapest possible rates and exported the finished products at very high
If prompted with the question what is colonization and or how did Europe and America colonize different countries and peoples the answer might be as simple as: it was the process of taking land from other countries and pushing to change the peoples of those countries towards western ways. This answer is to simple, a lot of people do not know the motives behind colonizing another country. Even though the motives behind colonizing another country depend on the time and location of the colonizing, Europe and America have always set above every other country around the world. They title themselves as being superior to all others. Thus, a lot of countries bought into the western ways and believe Westerners to be “demigod”. In Michael Adas essay, Contested Hegemony: The Great War and the Afro-Asian Assault on the Civilizing-Mission, even though the focus is on the ups and downs of colonization in Asia and Africa. The essay looks at the motives behind colonizing these peoples, why some bought into the idea and how World War One changed everything for Europe, Asia and Africa in terms of colonization.
Due to the influence of Marxist principles, there is some level of confusion in the usage of the terms imperialism and colonialism. This is due to the similarities of their practice, ending in an interchangeably usage of both terms. First, both imperialism and colonialism involve political and economic involvement over a particular territory. However, in the past colonies and empires deferred drastically. colonialism practices the relocation of population to a new territory, while maintaining political adherence to their country. This implies a political control over a territory and a loss of its sovereignty, which involves the suppression of individuals. Referring to the extension of sovereignty over a territory establishing political control over it as a source of power. “The term colony comes from the Latin word
