(Akbaba & Eroǧlu, 2013).” There have been several cases where cyberbullying causes teenagers to take their own life’s (commit suicide). It can cause individuals to suppress negative emotions within them. Lowering their self-esteem and looking at life with a sense of hopelessness. Jessica Laney was a victim of cyberbullying when she was insulted on social media.

Cyber-bullying is a very well-known, yet untouched issue that thrives within the age of technology. As it remains untouched and "acknowledged" by the striving online communities, negative cyberspace behavior increases. It gets to the point where this behavior is so frequent, there had been instances of a victim's suicide, supposedly caused by people on the Internet, who are classed as cyber-bullies. Cyber-bullies should be held criminally responsible for a victim's suicide because they are breaking the law, using the web to their advantage, and if they are not held criminally responsible, chances are that the problem will continue.

People who are involved in this or have started a conflict with someone over the internet are called cyber bullies. Cyber bullies harass teens and kids online by saying rude or nasty things about them. Three out of four cyber bullies do this to feel powerful and the other one fourth say that they do it for fun. The bullies start rumors about their victims and if their victim posts a bad or inappropriate picture then the bully will pounce on the chance to make their life hell. Sometimes the bully will get other people or students to join in on the harassment, just making things two times worse. The bullies do not care how bad their victim’s life is. This has caused suicide and some of the bullies will still say that they do not care or that they “deserved it” . In the United States, 42% of teens and kids have been cyberbullied and one in every four have had it happen more than once in their lives. “21% of victims have received threatening e-mails or messages online or over text”(Scholastic).

Cyberbullying is one of the many factors for a teen to commit suicide. Cyberbullying is the use of the internet to send harm to another person. It is a way of bullying that happens anonymously through the internet. “While cyberbullying alone is not likely to lead to youth suicide, it may worsen feelings of hopelessness in adolescents struggling with stress in their lives” (Hinduja, Sameer, and Patchin). Cyberbullying can easily be started by just making fun of someone and continuing to something more serious. People think that making a joke online is funny, but little do they know it can really affect someone. As teens, we do not fully think before typing something online and what seems like no big deal to someone, can be a breaking point for someone else. There are many movies that talk about cyberbullying and it is suppose to spread awareness about this kind of bullying. Cyberbullying is a very depressing thing that can happen to a person. In an article, “Baby Rape Sparks Outrage”, Sameer Hinduja, states that “1-in-3 children say they are cyberbullied, and about 12 percent say they have bullied others online”, (The Press Democrat). Imagine if a family member comes home depressed and is scared to tell someone what is happening to them. It may be that they got bullied at school or on the internet but can not get help. If a student gets bullied and can not get help it will eventually lead them to think about suicide, since they can not get everything off of their chest. There are not many laws on cyber bullying, which means that this social activity is allowed. Anyone can open up any type of social media and start rumors or even make fun of anybody. In the article, two- twelve-year old were cyber bullying a female classmate. They wrote on the internet rumors that their classmate had a sexually transmitted disease, which was not true. Not only that but also called her names and even wrote threats to expose personal information. Unfortunately, the bullied twelve years old ended up hanging herself and the bullies were arrested. This article is devastating because there are people out there who will put a person down and the victim ends up committing suicide is very heartbreaking. Assume this was a close friend or even family member such as sister, brother, cousin and so on, does this not make humans think about their actions before committing them. Cyberbullying has spread all over the internet, in most cases it has caused young teens to commit suicide. According to Yale University, bullied victims are 7-9% more likely to commit suicide. A lot of kids who are cyberbullied get picked on at school then go home and continue to be harassed. They usually don’t seek help because they want to keep their internet privileges. Overtime they continue to endure that pain and either talk to someone about it or take their own life.

Soon after he killed himself with a gun he borrowed from a friend, just so he could protect his family from the students at McKinney Boyd High School.

This research shows that bullying may harm countless people under the age of eighteen who use the media. It has not ever been easier to make friends than it is right now, mainly because of social networking sites. Just a few generations ago, it was pretty hard to connect with people, unless you were the really outgoing type that can make conversation with anyone at a party or get together.
