What are ways to connect research and practice? How might counselors use research in marriage, couple, and family counseling? Before I started the Masters degree program at Lamar my clinical supervisor informed our treatment team, that adolescent counselors could only use evidence-based interventions. Within outpatient substance abuse treatment, under the new manage care era. Many of these interventions were proven to be ineffective and our success rate was around 6 or 7% company wide. However, when I took the research methods course I found in my literature review that within the adolescent substance abuse treatment not many interventions were evidence based. Mainly because most counselors choose not to work in that age range due to many the …show more content…
2004; Liddle 2004; Schroder et al. 2007). (Stevenson, 2014) Stevenson (2014) later clarified this statement by finding the following passage: Due to methodological issues, such as differing diagnostic criteria and treatment programme definitions, it is difficult to draw specific conclusions from the literature as to which interventions are more effective for specific adolescent populations, particularly those with coexisting psychopathology (Bukstein & Winters 2004). (Pagey et al., 2010) (Stevenson, 2014). By going through the process of reviewing the literature I was educated on how scientist practitioners apply research to the field of practice. Once armed with the research I was able to implement interventions that I believed to work and used the research to show our accrediting agency so that I was able to use my own interventions in my …show more content…
During the group the counselor identified many of the day-to-day struggles that come with being an African American student and some of the racial prejudice that occurs. The counselor then highlighted the implications that this has on the students learning experiences and how this has negatively affected these students to the point where anxiety takes over when they face authority figures. They then find that by facilitating an educational group aimed at changing the effects of the phenomena by allowing the opportunity to change the group think mentality. Langston offered commentary that shed light on the black on black crime and the effects that slavery still has till this day. Lastly, I see research helping counselor within this field of practice by providing statistics and examples that showcase the desired result. This in turn makes for a more vivid picture. Furthermore, helping the students to see that there has been some success using the intervention and that it meets its desired outcome. Reflect on what you have learned in this course and discuss how it might influence your work as a professional
The value of empirically based knowledge versus applied knowledge is used by professional counselors to answer various questions concerning their clients and themselves. Empirical knowledge gained from observation and experiments is “explanatory and it proves explanations that help to answer the questions” (Broderick 32). Applied knowledge is acquired through learning to help the counselor to provide solutions and answers for the questions.
This graph provided from Laureate Education depicts overlap of these three factors lets us know that the research is valued and merited, when there is no overlap, this is where consideration and hesitation of the research should be considered (Laureate Education (Producer). (n.d.). According to Norcross, J., Hogan, T., & Koocher, G, professionals and practitioners are having to base their practices which are evidenced based at an increasing rate due to the strong implications that Evidence-based practices have had on the field in relation to practice, training, and policy (Norcross, J., Hogan, T., & Koocher, G. 2008).
For my evidence based intervention I understand the importance of scientific research to inform my practice, however, I believe that the consideration of individual characteristics is just as important. I must consider the issues of lack of confidence, purpose and effort for each of my students and use research to develop strategies that may work for my students. I have developed a range of data on the students’ academic results, attitudes in classes, students learning style, teachers’ comments on these students in a range of classes, students’ self-belief as well as their belief about education and where their goals for education and where they see themselves going after school. Evidence based intervention allows for a targeted group of students
Researchers collect data and create reports, in order to examine if there has an effect of some kind (Laureate Education, 2008). In the counseling profession, it is essential to collect data on treatment interventions, to establish the effect and significance (Laureate Education, 2008). For my final project, I will be implementing two types of data collection methods, which are focus groups and interviews. I believe by using these two methods, I will be able to determine if the interventions being implemented are having an impact on the homeless community in Baltimore City.
Also, included are worksheets completed by patients during the student’s sessions, which addressed the pros and cons of quitting, methods to improving problematic relationships, and an exercise where patients reflected on their past and present situations to identify their strengths instead of failures. The specific learning objective, Engage in Practice-Informed Research and Research-Informed Practice, was met through psychoeducational and life-skills groups. The student demonstrated the ability to engage in critical thinking and incorporate scientific research throughout the intervention process, which are key components of Advanced Generalist Practice (“SWG 593 Applied Project”, n.d.). The student completed extensive training modules provided by the agency on evidence-based practices and co-facilitated and independently facilitated groups based on relevant theories at the micro and mezzo levels and debriefed with field instructor to obtain feedback on the effectiveness of the researched informed
Summarize the relevant research and describe how it supports the plans curricular and professional development goals.
Drawing on a range of evidence discuss how different types of research can be used to support practice.
The theory is a useful component for social work practice on two dimensions. The dimension can deal with the function of the theory or the level of abstraction of the theory. The function is an extent on what the theory focuses on for an example to describe to explain human behavior. The function can also facilitate change in the behavior. The abstraction can provide some general ideas for understanding and/or intervene with a more circumscribed range of human behavior (Coady & Peter, 2008). To better understand how theories are applied to families this paper will be exam one theory and implement the theory to the family. This paper will cover a case study and identify specific methods, techniques, and evidence-base interventions.
According to American Psychological Association (2001), evidence based interventions have been proved successful in the field of clinical and counseling psychology and extended to the field of educational psychology. Evidence-based practice incorporates three key elements to ensure that the process is successful; these features include the individual characteristic, professional expertise, and best available research (Kanne, Abbachi, & Constantino,
The strategies for research utilization include: disseminate the findings of the research study, facilitate the organizational modifications for implementing the findings and encouraging collaborative research that is directly transferable to clinical practice (Burns & Grove, 2009, p. 20).
I think evidence-based practices can not be over-emphasized because it is best if professionals use scientific-based practices. These practices have a much better chance of producing positive results because there is scientific evidence proving its efficiency. however just base a practice has scientific proof, this does not mean that it is the best practice for a client. the counselor should not solely reply of evide-based practices when working with clients. They need to be cultural compenetaen in various areas. They can use evidence-based practices if the approach is appropriate for the client. Another thing to keep in mind is that using evidence-based practice mean that counselors have to stay up to date. Practice can not be successful if
For my review of the literature I have chosen to look at treatment modality effectiveness for adolescent substance abuse counseling, to build upon the foundation of literature in evidence based practices. I aim to improve my own understanding of current treatment interventions for substance abuse counseling. In an effort to efficiently explore the issues surrounding treatment modalities for adolescent substance abuse counseling effectiveness, a subset of the literature has been selected for its relevance to the following questions:
As each person embraces this area of research some disagreement is expected and the professionals use the opposition to help the program be successful. The disagreement helps them conduct more research. Although there is an increase in the need for evidence-base programs and practices, there are individuals who do not consider this area of research to be effective. This help the researcher address all the concerns and issues to make better choices and decisions in the future. They are advantages and disadvantages in using these programs.
Evidence-based research in the profession of social work lends credibility and validity to the profession and provides reassurance to the public. Evidence-based research provides the foundation on which the social work profession stands. Through the process of determining the best treatment and intervention to use, the social work practitioner can be confident that they based their decision on meaningful, evidence-based
This research relates to counseling. The field of counseling looks at methods that will engage an individual with personal issues and how they cope on daily basis. I have several reasons why this topic is of interest to me. I am a Certified Alcohol/Drug Counselor, currently employed as a supervisor at a Women’s Residential Misa Facility. I have been in this field for 10 years and I remain baffled by the
