There are many types of conflict present in Holes, for of which are: Man versus man, Man versus Self, Man versus Society and Man versus Nature. These four examples of conflict help the characters and plot develop their resolutions to help the reader to understand what the book is about and on a different level and a different way. The first conflict the reader see in Holes is Man versus man. This conflict is mainly between Kate Barlow and the sheriff. For example, when Kate Barlow kills the sheriff for not helping her with Sam. When Trout Walker is planning to kill sam and burn down the schoolhouse. “Three days after Sam's death, miss Katherine shot the sheriff while he was sitting in his chair drinking a cup of coffee then she carefully applied a fresh coat of red lipstick and give him the kiss he had asked for”(115). It is significant that after she kills the sheriff she gives him a kiss. The conflict is resolved when she kills the sheriff. The conflict is mainly between Stanley and his own exhaustion. For example when Stanley could not get himself out of his hole,”He put his hands on the rim and tried to pull himself up. He could not do it. His arms were too weak to lift his heavy body”(40). It shows significant because he finished his first hole and he was exhausted afterwards. The conflict is resolved then Stanley gets out of this hole and spit in it but if he were not to get out of his hole he would have to have someone else help him or been stuck in there until someone came to see if you was okay.
