In Night, by Elie Wiesel, Elie flips on and off with having hope and hopelessness. It was hard to have hope in this horrid time, but however even the smallest and some of the most dangerous things gave Elie hope. When Elie first arrives at Auschwitz he says, “ We mustn’t give up hope, even now as the sword hangs over our heads.” (Page 31) Elie had said this right after he had just arrived at Auschwitz. When Elie first arrived he saw smoke coming from a large chimney, veteran prisoners, and officers with guns. At this time Elie must have had hopelessness but then his hopelessness turned into hope. He realized that he must have hopefulness in order to survive. “God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of love, power, and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1.7) Elie had multiple reasons to have fear but he turned his fear into love, power, and self-discipline. …show more content…

On page 60 he says, “We were not afraid. And yet, if a bomb had fallen on the blocks, it would have claimed hundreds of inmates’ lives. But we no longer feared death, in any event not this particular death. Every bomb that hit filled us with joy, gave us renewed confidence.” In a way this was a great thing for him because bombs hitting gave him hope and renewed confidence. Everything was being burned down including the factory he had worked in. In his mind he must have been thinking he was free from work. However his father was at work during the attack. So he didn’t want his father to die of course so he must have had a little bit of fear and hopelessness during this
