Factors That Contribute to Equality of Individuals in Essay

Diversity is said to make us unique and beautiful, yet too often it creates the ugliest conflicts. History will tell us more often than not that fundamental components of human life (race, religion, politics, culture, etc) are the root of many conflicts. Yet, people seem to make our discrepancies seem praiseworthy, and that we must accept them wholeheartedly. Although acceptance is crucial in forming a more empathetic society, it is important to recognize that one’s willingness to accept others is shaped by their past experiences and upbringing.

Our country is a good example of what diversity means. Globalization has increased rapidly, making our society a more diverse place. Where individuals from foreign places with different cultures, race, and languages all unite to become one. As one of my favorite novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, once said, “The rich are different from you and me.” (Walter Benn Michaels 725) The problem here is that Fitzgerald failed to realize that the “rich” were the same as everyone else, except with more money. A diverse society represents a country with various people of color, socioeconomics, national origin, etc. Although we are all different yet, the same, and come from different places, race, color, gender, and socioeconomics, nobody is looked down upon nor superior to the other.

A child/young/person with a physical disability may include; functional, gross and fine motor skills. They may suffer a hearing or visual impairment which may impact on their ability to walk, play or learn. These may affect their confidence as well as challenge social skills.

The difference between ethnicity and race is that race is supposedly a scientific difference between groups of people. Race subdivides groups of people by a physical or genetic characteristic. Ethnicity, on the other hand, considers cultural traits. Race is a flawed term, because there is more variation within a racial group than between racial groups. Ethnicity, is a true term, because there are distinct cultural groups within groups of humans. Although there is a lot of mixing and melding of cultural groups, it is still easy to find distinct groups.

Social Class is a division of a society based on social and economic status. In today’s society there are three main social groups in America: upper, middle, and lower class; these rankings are contributed by mass amounts of factors, but one of the main factors that people cannot control is their race and ethnicity. Race and ethnicity, likewise as gender, can also play a part in a variety of other concerns such as, education level, income, and where you reside.

Social class is defined as 'people having the same social or economic status' (Wordnet). In contemporary American society, social class is based on the amount of money and property you have and also prestige. Prestige is given to a person through the line of work or the family that they come from. For example, upper-upper class member Jennifer Lopez reeks of prestige not only because she has millions of dollars in her bank account, but she has very expensive luxuries, cars, and houses.

Race, a term people choose to blandly deny but affect our everyday lives. Whether or not we choose to be consciously aware of it or not, race has an astronomical effect on our society. A persons’ race affects what school that they attend, their form of employment and ultimately how they are perceived. Race is defined as “groupings of people believed to share common descent, based on perceived innate physical similarities”. Smith Lecture notes. Essentially, one can categorize or identify the race of an individual based on physical characteristics such as eye shape, nose, hair color, hair texture, and body structure.

3. In society today, most people view diversity as a bad thing because it doesn’t give people the chance to experience different things outside of what they are normally accustomed to.

Diversity is an important and beautiful concept in our society and this essay will prove why. Reasons to support this are it makes each individual life worthwhile, it helps us evolve and become better and it can build closer relationships.

Every individual is diverse. Everyone has different background, experiment, and sometimes even race. Therefore, it is impossible to understand each other perfectly. Issues about social justice such as racism, sexism, and ageisms are happening because of gap among individuals with certain idea, which is diversity.

To get from diversity to equality, cultures must first find a common ground. For example, American identity seemed impossible at its beginning. Then each different culture found they are all different from one another, but equally different. Then those differences must remain unjudged, and therefore equal. The gaps in common culture are a binding factor in American Identity. So in this way, differences are what drive America to its very foundation, equality. The idea that equality stems from a single identity and the idea that cultural differences prevent equality are both to limited to see what true equality is. Common ground cannot exist if differences are not there to challenge and stimulate it.

The world is like one huge jigsaw puzzle, composed of a plethora pieces of different sizes, shapes, and colors. These pieces can either interconnect with one another to create a beautiful art piece or stay broken apart and remain in a chaotic state. Similarly, people of different cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds in the world can choose to either embrace the diversity of the one true human race and unify together in peace or they can choose to despise the arbitrary differences between people, which develops into bitter conflicts. Despite tremendous progress in modern society concerning social issues, it is often the differences between people that are the driving forces behind several prominent issues in the world today. A society in which everyone is an exact replica of one another, creates a dull environment. Each movement, expression, as well as phrase is similar throughout all individuals. Characteristics that separate one from a group are not present. Diversity matters for one to be successful, respect others and feel like they belong. Determining success is due to the level of one’s potential. The color of skin, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or age does not lower the level of potential of a person. A stigma around the ideal individual has developed and from that, if one does not follow the stereotypes, they will become worthless. Individuals from different species, humans included, are already even from infancy regarding the differences among individuals belonging to their species. Knowing that every person is distinct is a very basic human experience. Even as children it would be very hard to imagine the world full of same people. Variability has been caused by adaptation and survival for the advancement of the human race, but it still caused significant socio-economic repercussions in a global scale. Human variation is the leading cause of discrimination, genocide, and ostracism that is focused on some groups, race, and even individuals.

The society in which we live in today is filled with a diverse group of people. Generally, when people think about diversity, demographics are primarily considered. This is because diversity is associated with our various ethnic groups. The United States is home to over 300 million people and each one of them is different; therefore, the U.S. is known as the “melting pot”. Along with the many types of races, there are a variety of age groups, religious beliefs, and personal backgrounds. Although we typically think about physical appearance and social status, we never really consider someone’s personality being associated with diversity. Each person has a different personality from everyone else and that is due to two factors--nature and nurture.
