Towards the beginning of the novel it is noticeable that fire is praised by the protagonist and those who choose to conform to society’s rules. In this quote in particular, fire is being used as a tool against literature. The books are being demolished. However, fire is used with intentions to be positive. Instead of being used as destruction, fire is being used as a tool to keep warmth in this quote. Clarisse made him question fire’s true meaning by making him analyze it thoroughly.
