Slide 1: The Early Years * Known for her contributions to the nursing and mathematical fields as well as an important link in English feminism in the early 1850s while struggling with her self-definition and the expectations of an upper-class marital and family life. * Born May 12th 1820 into a wealthy upper middle-class family in Florence Italy, she was named after the city in which she was born. * As a child, Florence was very close to her anti-slavery lobbyist father. Being the youngest of two girls, and having no son, her father treated her as his friend and companion. Her father, William Nightingale, a wealthy English landowner, took responsibility for her education and personally taught her Greek, Latin, French, German, …show more content…
The Crimean War (Blue Slide) * Most of the conflict in the Crimean War occurred on the Crimean Peninsula, which lies on the southern tip of the Ukraine, and the pro-jects into the Black Sea. The Crimea was an important military position for the Russians, bc their naval fleet could access the Mediterranean Sea from the Region. * Britain was not the instigator of the Crimean War. They followed Emperor Napoleon III of France into it. It was the first war the British fought against a strong enemy, Russia, since defeating the French at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Because the British Army's victories had all been over smaller and poorly equipped armies in Africa and India, they were ill-prepared for the Crimean conflict. * The temporary quarters en route to the war had been in a disease-ridden pat of Bulgaria. Soldiers were required to leave their kits behind upon proceeding to Crimea. The supplies that were lost were not replaced. Soldiers arriving in Crimea after crossing the black sea where often near death on arrival and many died in the crossing. * The army then rationed supplies to the soldiers who were required to build fires, prepare and cook their own food while being ill with multiple diseases. * Nightingale's contribution to army reform was prompted by the extreme conditions in the British Army's provision of food, shelter, clothing, blankets and medical supplies for the
During this war, around 21,000 British soldiers died - however, only 2,755 were killed in action, and 2,000 because of battlefield injuries. Over 16,000 British soldiers died due to diseases such as typhus, typhoid, cholera, and dysentery. During this war a lot of hospital patients had to lie on the floor – as there weren’t enough beds. Also, soldiers who had infected limbs had to have them amputated with a saw – and a lot of the time these limbs were given to the military dogs as food. Two significant people to this war were Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. Florence Nightingale became a nurse in 1853 - only a year before the Crimean war had begun. After a statement that there weren't enough medical facilities for the war, the war minister of the time - Sidney Herbert - asked Florence to help improve the medical work in the military hospitals. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/nightingale_florence.shtml BBC, History, Florence Nightingale) She was the first person to focus on cleanliness and hygiene in hospitals, and also invented the pie chart. After the war, she was able to
There were certain items or supplies that each soldier needed to possess that aided in their survival. Other items were discretionary or optional, not entirely important for the
Over the past two decades, EBP has expanded on Florence's theories. EBP constitutes the combination of clinical expertise, patient values, and research evidence when making decisions about patient care. In the 1990's, it was determined that just increasing knowledge was not sufficient for improving patient outcomes. To obtain better patient outcomes "new knowledge must be transformed into clinically useful forms, effectively implemented across the entire care team within a systems context,
Instead, nurses were to assist with the soldiers’ diet and make sure what they ate was carefully regulated. They cared for physical needs like distribution of linen and clothes. They also helped with emotional and spiritual care by comforting them and writing letters to their family for them.
The war of 1812 took place across much of North America and beyond. The war was born as a result of the conflict between Britain and Napoleon’s France.
Crimean war: is a war that occurred between 1853 and 1856 , between Russia against a union of Great Britain, Sardinia, France, and Turkey. The attack of Russia against Turkey launched the war, bu this later made alliances with the above indicated countries and destroyed the naval power of Russia in the Black sea (1854), which enabled them to capture the castle city of Sebastopol that was sieged for long time in 1855.
The army was undernourished and living in crowded quarters. They were also getting sick with disease such as typhoid, typhus, smallpox, dysentery, and pneumonia. These diseases contributed to the death of 2,500 soldiers by the end of winter. Women of enlisted men provided valuable services that the army needed,such as laundry and nursing.
The soldiers continued to survive off of very little supplies, from having little to no food to survive off of or clothing that can not protect them and more. Due to such sever conditions, Dr Albigence Waldo, a Connecticut surgeon wrote down in his diary at the camp "A general cry thro' the Camp this Evening among the Soldiers, "No Meat! No Meat!" - the Distant vales Echo'd back the melancholy sound - "No Meat! No Meat!" (Document B). Because of the lack of supplies, some of these soldiers can not stay healthy enough to fight since they could have become incredibly malnourished. Others would say that even if they had less supplies, they still could have surivied with what items they had, even if it could cause them to be uncomfortable or even a possibly of getting sick. However, Along with Dr. Waldos diary,
My definition of nursing is that of someone who genuinely cares about the well-being of others and helps heal those who are ill. Nursing is both an art and a science because in order to understand a patients diagnosis you must know the pathophysiology and basic lab values. The science part of nursing allows us to make judgments on medication orders doctors prescribe, procedures, and practices. Art is also apart of nursing because as nurses we must have intuition, compassion, and warmth towards our patients. It is what allows us to therapeutically communicate with our patients. A person can have the science part, but not master the art and therefore, that person may be uncompassionate towards a patient. I have see nurses in clinical settings
Many physicians and caregivers were very hard to find, especially with proper training. In the barracks, the military was contained in a closed space, had poor hygiene, and all of these components led to the spread of disease and infection (Health and Medicine in Revolutionary America, n.d.). As reported by Dosespot, when living the life of a soldier in the American Revolution, you had a higher chance of dying in a hospital than in the battlefield. According to statistics, there was a 75% percent chance that you would survive treatment from a wound or illness if you seek treatment in a hospital. Though, there was a 98% chance that you live through a battle.
In the most suitable cases, the soldiers had cabins, which were crude, small, and very unsturdy. In most instances, however, they got tents made out of canvas, which frequently ripped and did not help keep out cold in the dead winter. Because of this, many men got illnesses such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and dysentery. In fact, so many got sick that the hospitals were overflowing, even though each section had a hospital for itself. Some soldiers’ wives agreed to be nurses to help, but there were not enough medical supplies, so many died. Out of 12,000 men, 3,000 died and 2,000 left because they were sick.
In November 1777, the Continental Army miraculously retreated and escaped the clutches of the British army and paced towards a winter camp-Valley Forge. Afterwards, George Washington, the Commander-in-Chief of the army, wrote to George Clinton, conveying the severity of their situation, "For some days past, there has been little less than a famine in camp. A part of the army has been a week without [food], and the rest for three or four days. Naked and starving as they are, we cannot enough admire the incomparable patience and fidelity of the soldiery, that they have not been ere this excited by their sufferings, to a general mutiny or dispersion." The soldiers were without soap, consequently, horrible itching rashes arose. Brought from countless miles away, water was to be saved and drank sparingly, flour was soon to be gone and the soldiers could only imagine the juicy taste of meat. Poorly constructed huts
One poor condition that the continental army faced was the unbearable sickness. For instance Dr. Albigence Waldo states, “I am sick - discontented - and out of humour.” (Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777). This shows that, from where they have started the living conditions have not improved. Dr. Albigence Waldo also writes, “Poor food - hard lodging - cold weather - fatigue - Nasty cloaths - nasty Cookery - Vomit half my time - smoak’d out my senses... ”(Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) This statement describes the terrible food, the sickness, the ripped clothes, and the terrible environment. Furthermore, Dr. Albigence Waldo records, “Heartily wish myself at home, my skin and eyes are almost spoil’d with continual smoke.”(Dr. Albigence Waldo, 1777) Particularly, this shows the quality of ventilation that the soldiers are bearing with. These living conditions have shown, that the congress can’t support them and give the army enough money for food or clothes at the very
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy. Her parents named her after the city she was born in. She was born on May 12,1980, she was raised mostly in Derbyshire England. Many people when they hear Florence Nightingale think about her as a nurse and for her fight for better hospital care. Florence did a lot more in her life than achieve better hospital conditions, and become a nurse. She was a brilliant mathematician, and used statistics to apply them to achieve her reforms. Florence was a well-educated woman in a number of fields other than math;
Health and clothing is a big issue here at Valley Forge. George Washington apparently cannot provide his troops with good supportive clothes. ”Congressman stayed several weeks and said they would help with getting food and clothing…” (p. 149 Powell). The Congressman say they are going to help but I do not believe them. The health at camp is the. Most all the soldiers here are ill. “Poor food-hard lodging-cold…”(p.151 Diary of Dr.Waldo.) There are soldiers such as Dr.Waldo are suffering from the cold and hardships of Valley Forge. There are many soldiers who do not have sustainable clothing and we cannot just be left here at this camp half naked.( Dr.Waldo) If General Washington can support himself why cannot he support us. Here at camp there is no meat and no one cooks good meals. No good food equals fatigue.( Dr.Waldo) This problem of not having good health and clothing in camp is a very big reason why I am not going to stay any longer after my time is up. If general Washington can not support his soldiers by getting medication and sustainable clothing why should I stay to just most likely to
