Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein seems to be an exact representation of the ideas of the 17th century philosopher John Locke. In Locke’s “An Essay Concerning Human Understanding,” he talks about the idea that we as humans are all born with a ‘blank slate’ that contains no knowledge whatsoever and that we can only know that things exist if we first experience them through sensation and reflection. In Frankenstein, the monster portrays Locke’s ideas of gaining knowledge perfectly through worldly experience of learning his surroundings.

We as humans reflect on our past unconsciously. We are constantly telling ourselves what we would’ve done differently in a certain situation or maybe what was done well. Using this tool of reflection helps shape and form our future selves for the better. The second example that is more specific is when the monster is staying in the small hovel attached to a small cottage. “I had been accustomed, during the night, to steal a part of their store for my own consumption; but when I found that in doing this I inflicted pain on the cottagers…” (Shelley 137). In this experience, the monster started to reflect on what his actions have caused the poor family by stealing their goods they used to survive on. He feels guilty and decides to redeem his actions by providing wood at their door step each night. This use of reflection has taught the monster that his freewill has limitation and that he cannot do certain things without impacting other people around him thus shaping and forming him into a smarter being and at the same gaining knowledge through these experiences.

Have you ever wanted to find someone to love? Well, the monster wanted to find someone just like him to love. Victor Frankenstein created a monster that was nice and helped people. But, people treated him bad for doing nice things. The monster felt lonely so Victor and the monster made a promise that if he created a female creature for the monster to love that he will go live in the forest and eat nuts and berries and leave humanity alone. So, Victor went to go build a female creature, but before he made the creature come to life he destroyed it and the monster was devastated. Yes, I think that Victor made the right decision to destroy the creature.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, illustrates an interesting story focusing in on many different themes, but what most readers may miss, is the similarities between Victor Frankenstein and the creature he created. As the story develops, one may pick up on these similarities more and more. This is portrayed through their feelings of isolation, thirst for revenge, their bold attempt to play god, and also their hunger to obtain knowledge. These are all displayed through a series of both the actions and the words of Frankenstein and his creature.
Knowledge is given to those that understand the power it holds, this power could either destroy or help one in their path to success. “Frankenstein” written by Mary Shelly is a novel that depicts the story of the creation of life. The novel illustrates great complicity between the feeling and emotions of both the monster created, and some of the main characters. The monster, from the moment it was born, obtains a mind of its own. The monster has the ability to think on it own, along with have its own feeling. Caroline, on the other hand, is not as significant of a character as the monster.
