French Ambassadors Analysis

Art History is the study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts. The history of art, we feel, can sometimes be confused with art criticism. However, Art History is concerned with finding the value of the artistic piece in respect with others in the same category of art or movement, and art criticism is more of an evaluation of art. The art examined best represents the culture during the time period, visions the artist imagined, and history behind an event. It also represents society in a specific area, beliefs the people may have, writing that tells a story, the natural world and environment, conflict between people and areas, and the human body. With these representations, artwork overall represents the life in which we live (d). Each piece has its own genre, design, format and style to it. This makes each piece extremely different, yet pleasing to the eye. They also vary between paintings, sculptures and architecture. These different types also make a variety of artwork to be seen by all people. The art pieces that I chose, Jar, Bottle and Glass by Juan Gris, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí, and Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, seemed interesting to me and I believe to best represent the context in which they were created, along with the major artistic movements of the time. I went on to research them more thoroughly to better understand the history behind them,

I was fortuned to have had parents who had a respect for all kinds of art and approached life with an open mind. Thus being furthered blessed to grow up near a metropolis which possesses a major art museum and galleries showcasing new talent, filling young eyes with wonderment. An art appreciation study early own in life would have been beneficial but alas, I burn with shame as one who falls in the class of “I know what I like” when asked about art. During my visit to the Tampa Museum of Art, I observed and viewed various pieces from The Classical World exhibit. While I observed numerous works, I was drawn to a specific piece due to its uniqueness when compared to the other pieces in the exhibit. In this paper, I will be describing The Torso of Aphrodite, using my own viewpoints and the elements of formal art analysis, in order to explain the uniqueness when compared to other pieces in The Classical World exhibit.

Last Sunday, I went to the Museum of Fine Arts and walked through the marble corridors in pursuit of Percy’s “it.” I was accompanied by a friend who was in pursuit of taking candid photos. Due to the nature of the assignment, I was not nearly as interested and felt that I could have been lost in the moment if I had entered on my own free will. Criticizing a painting has a process that contains only four steps to it. Describe, analyze, interpret, and judge are the four steps to evaluating any work of art. The painting that we will use this process on is called “The Ambassadors” by Hans Holbein II in the year 1533 which is an oil painting on a panel. We will apply this process to determine if his work of art is a success or a failure.

To excel in exams, one must memorize hundreds of artworks and compare them not only aesthetically but also within their cultural backgrounds. To prepare, I studied relevant information such as the dates, media, and artistic expressions to understand how these artworks fit within their cultural contexts. This memorization requires countless hours allocated to otherwise negligible details in order to understand the human factors surrounding these timeless masterpieces, such as craftsmanship, patronage, and audience. Alberti makes it clear that he is not concerned with painting’s origins, even though he briefly discusses them. Subsequently, the author uses old writings as reference to strengthen his point of view on how highly painting is esteemed above other “crafts” history. It is therefore clear that the author believes painting to be somewhat in metaphysical nature, something beyond the ordinary.

Each of us observed similar aspects in the painting. The central features that were pointed out were the objects of the blue, velvet bag, the ivory horn, and the various birds. Arthur C. Danto in “The Artworld” provides us with the argument that, “To see something as art requires something that the eye cannot descry-an atmosphere of artistic theory, a knowledge of the history of art: an artworld.” Danto shows us the importance of the artworld in order to know that a work of art is more than just what we can plainly see. Danto provides two theories he calls the “IT” (Imitation theory) and the “RT” (Reality theory). With these two theories, Danto explains how we can define art and why “The Artworld” is needed to help understand art, because after all, “these days one might not be aware he was on artistic terrain without an artistic theory to tell him so.”

In the subject of field for art history Robert pointed out the art is found in all categories except for the unknown era of the Renaissance all the way to the 19th and 20th century in Europe also the African Diaspora. In this part of where he is examining the fields Robert shows the history of how art progress through the globe and similar styles of art like the European art are shown in the north and south of America. He also calls forth the Art Criticism and Theory which is to be the only category to be critical and theoretical. Criticism in art is what demonstrates the discipline in art history for rejection or approval of the work.

After observing all the art in the chapter, it can be concluded that it is quite interesting as well as surprising
