Freshman Service Day Reflection Caty DuDevoir On October 20, 2016, I was given the opportunity to work at The Cedars, a retirement community in Portland. Mrs. Fitzpatrick and several of my classmates accompanied me on this trip. A service day is about putting others before yourself, and understanding that their needs are more important than yours. To be a Cheverian, one must being willing to sacrifice and put others before themselves, Cura Personalis. At The Cedars, my small group and I talked to a group of residents. We played pass with a beach ball filled with questions and then went around answering them. After, we went upstairs in the living quarters. We met a different group of people and talked to them about their lives and current
The course objective for the class Service Learning in English is to increase one’s knowledge about language arts tutoring through readings, discussion, and experience working with teachers and a specific student struggling with academics as well as his/her work ethic. I was assigned to tutor Aaron Ring, a freshman at Christel House Academy South, a nationally acclaimed award winning school. The school has a healthy and safe welcoming environment that contains a diverse assortment of students and a 20:1 student-teacher ratio to allow teachers and students to build a close relationship. The different rooms of the school were neat and well maintained. The classrooms were very clean with different lightings, colorful decorations, couches for the
OH! Sunday we stopped and talked to an older man walking in the alley, he invited invited us in and we talked with him
1). How do you believe service learning (SL) is utilized as a tool for fostering civic engagement?
For my Community Service Learning placement, I am volunteering for PAAL, which is a program for children and youth with physical and intellectual impairments. Their vision is to offer individuals who otherwise may not get the chance, an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of physical activities.
In “Serve or Fail,” Dave Eggers dissatisfies the phenomenon that although college students have too much leisure, they are not willing to give a few hours doing community services. Eggers suggests that colleges should consider instituting a service requirement for graduation, and colleges are best-poised to create in their students a lifelong commitment to volunteering. He pointed out that there are even
For my service learning project hours, I was in a fourth grade classroom at Sandy Elementary School. My mentor was Mrs. Hunt, who has taught for three years. There were 20 students in the classroom I was in, but in the school itself there were 4 fourth grade classes. I have never observed or helped in a classroom with older children so it was definitely a new learning experience for me. I learned many new things from the students and Mrs. Hunt during my hours in the classroom.
When I first arrived to volunteer at the facility of Crestview, I did not imagine to acquire all the advice given to me by the elders that reside there. Our goal with this project was to go every monday morning and paint the residents nails. Also we got to visit with them and learn from their experiences. It wasn't just about serving, but it was about gaining the knowledge we ourselves did not know. Every now and then my group and I would go around delivering items to the patients that are not as active. It was just exciting to see how some patients reacted to us being there, they really enjoyed our company.
When I was volunteering at N.Y.P.Q., us the volunteers we in charge of bringing material throughout the building. The nurses on both the, pediatrics, fifth floor, and sixth floor, asks me to bring down blood bank document's, specimen to the chemistry lab, and pick ups on another floor throughout the building. I now knew where everything is but when it was my first few weeks here I always got lost. It was my second week volunteering at the hospital on the fifth floor and Monique, the clerk, asked me to bring down specimen to the chemistry lab because the specimen they had originally received was insufficient. I asked her for direction which led me to the correct part of the building, but I still couldn't find it. I tried looking at the signs, but the chemistry lab sign did
In my pre service learning reflection I talked about that when I go to my service learning classroom I want to be invited with open arms and be included into the classroom. This was very important for me because I know that it is hard to include someone new into your classroom. When I actually went to my service learning class I was welcomed by the teachers and by the students. I became a very helping hand because I was included in teaching lesson and helping get the students to use their words when they wanted something. I also became very close with not only my mentor teacher but also with her aids. I felt so loved and happy to be in my service learning classroom. I remember om my last day that they asked me are you going to miss us and would
Our work at the Campus Kitchen focuses on preparing and delivering meals to the elderly. Since I have volunteered at Campus Kitchen for three years, I was already familiar with the routine of preparing food and delivering it to elderly people in need. I chose this service because in the past, I have received a great deal of satisfaction assisting the elderly and providing them with food to sustain their daily lives. Another great benefit of working in the Campus Kitchen is that it is an excellent way to gain exposure to cooking (one of my hobbies) and interacting with others. During my campus kitchen assignment, we delivered prepared meals to elderly people because most of the recipients are unable to get out on their own. One of the experiences that stands out to me about my service work were the numerous smiles I saw on peoples faces as a result of Campus Kitchen volunteers simply showing up at their doorstep. As I went about my work, I thought about some of God’s teachings about feeding the hungry and I was left with a warm and satisfying feeling about the work I completed. Recapping, I believe that I did well in performing this service, and felt a great deal satisfaction that I could be a blessing to someone
According to Kathleen Flecky and Lynn Gitlow, service-learning is defined as, “learning that occurs in experiences, reflection, and civic engagement” (Flecky & Gitlow, 2011). In recent years more universities are implementing service learning into their curriculum. A key concept of service learning is civic responsibility. Civic responsibility can simply be defined as your responsibilities as a citizen. As will be shown later in this paper, service learning can have many benefits not only to a student, but also to the community members
Initially I thought my service learning time in the campus gardens would be working on one task, such as weeding, the whole time. While my first few minutes of service learning were occupied with weeding, I was pleasantly surprised to be working on different tasks. The time spent in the campus gardens has been time of learning and building community. With each new task I learn why I am doing it and how it helps the garden continue to flourish or give back to the surrounding community. When I harvested butternut squash, I learned first how to know when it was ready to be picked. That squash I harvested is for the Farm-to-Table event on campus. Knowing that the campus garden grew butternut squash, I chose to try it later when it was an option
When I was in my first semester of college as a dual credit student, I was assigned to do a service learning project. For this project, I had to volunteer somewhere for a few hours and then analyze what I saw and experienced. I decided to volunteer at a nursing home and spend some time with the elderly residents there. The experience that I had impacted my outlook on nursing homes and those with mental illnesses. While there, I saw many residents that were physically impaired but I was not prepared to witness so many people with failing minds. I feel like this project really opened my eyes and my heart for those that had once been able to live full lives and were now unable to care for themselves. A few years later, my own grandmother’s
Then there were the mission trips. Every summer for a week my youth group would go on a mission trip. Normally we would go to Pittsburgh and participate in what was known as the Pittsburgh project. The Pittsburgh Project is a nonprofit community development organization that sends out over 2,000 people annually to perform free home repairs for Pittsburgh’s elderly homeowners. My church youth group would travel to a specific home that we had been assigned for that week. We would have tools and paint and carpentry equipment that the Project supplied for us. Once we got to the particular house, we first introduced ourselves to the homeowner, let them know how grateful we were to be helping them out, ask them if there is anything specific other than what we’ve been told to do and let them know when we would be there every day. Normally, the homeowners sometimes would not be very involved in the decision making process, and some of them wanted to know every little thing that was happening. Over the course of working at the
I spent all of my service learning hours in the Butte community working with children and some adults. From my learning experiences I learned the value of donating your time in the community that you live in. I have gained new knowledge from my experiences that will help me become a successful teacher. It is my responsibility as a teacher to help my students become responsible adults when they leave my classroom. I want my students to contribute to our society just like I did in my teaching career in a positive way that will impact them for their rest of their lives. As a teacher, my success is measured on how well my students do. I think a big part of learning in the classroom has to do with real world situations students are put in. Some
