Have you ever had the feeling like someone knows you better than yourself? Frequently surrounded by so-called friends or acquaintances, as I like to call them, where a connection between people is little to nonexistent. Whereas having a true friend is someone who's there for you no matter what, for the marvelous and the dreadful. It’s theses kind of true friends that will have one’s back, they are loyal, trustworthy, and a valuable person to have in anyone’s life. To better understand what the word friend, it’s important to know the history. To begin with, it derives from Middle English the word friend means love, attachment, and feeling that of a relative. First notably used in the twelfth century. Therefore a friend is someone who listens to what one is saying and cares about them their feelings and opinion. On the other hand, at times it feels like my friendships are a bit one-sided, where I do the majority of listening. As a result of this, I’ve discovered a notable difference between a friend and a true friend, in a friendship; there are talkers and listeners. Except in a true friendship, where neither claim a specific role, both are talkers and the listeners. Thus it's fair to say a true friend is someone who can laugh at me, and make fun of my awkward moments with me, and vice versa. For example a four year old might say that a friend is the other boy that gave him a cookie. While an adult says someone to talk and relate to when they need it. They are also formed in a plethora of ways. For instance, the two four year olds could grow up staying friends, or you meet some random person in the supermarket and start talking, or even through another friend. Friends are part of what makes life fun, being able to enjoy the joyous times with another person, and lean on them in the challenging times.

A friendship can exist between best friends, friends, acquaintances, lovers, children, parents, siblings, and much more. However, all of these types of friendships are different.
Friendship is universal. It can bridge societal gaps of gender, race, social class, and differences in abilities. College is a time of personal growth, and friendships have a tremendous impact on the development and experiences of an individual. Through Best Buddies, college students and adults in the community with disabilities have the opportunity to share friendships. In the past, I had had several friendships come and go. Through these experiences, I have learned how to maintain a real, healthy relationship with friends. One outstanding example of the true meaning of friendship is found in the Bible in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7; it reads, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
