Choice is what makes you up as a person. Choice is always within your hands, but sometimes you may end up making the wrong decision . Choice is a main and dominant theme throughout the Lord of the RIngs. Many characters show their wisdom through the choices they make, and I believe choices are mandatory to show how much of a person you are, how strong your personality is, and how wise you may be depending on your decisions. First of all, choices determine how much of a person you are. Gandalf is wise and intelligent, and he shows that whenever he encounters a . He has the ability of reading peoples insight; he can analyze their character and sculpt to the best of what it can be. This makes him invulnerable to all the lies he hears from his enemies, makinghim choose the right path. One of his choices was when he assigned Bilbo to Thorin’s as an ally and an assistant, since Gandalf believes that Bilbo has trustworthy and bright minded; he didn't someone else knowing that there may be risks. …show more content…
Gandalf knew that he may gain unimaginable power, but he also knew that Saruman could use him as a tool. Here Gandalf shows that he doesn't want to be manipulated, because he already is powerful, both mentally and physically. For example, Gandalf conjured the tower of blue glowing smoke to confuse the Goblin King in the Misty Mountains. On another occasion, Gandalf showed that he is a true leader by nature since he did not panic when they were chased by wolves, but he just guided his friends to the nearest trees and protected them; and that is a trait of being strong and
Gandalf is a character in the hobbit series, he is the main mastermind behind the dwarves mission, he is a very powerful wizard that helps guide Bilbo and the whole company through emanate danger.
“Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay.” Gandalf claims in the quote above from The Hobbit that great power isn’t always necessary to accomplish great feats. If ordinary people can work as a team, the outcome can defeat an individual with great power. Bilbo and the dwarves assisted each other, and got help from other sources in order to accomplish their goal and grow as characters. This teamwork and growth is shown throughout the scenes of Rivendell, Mirkwood, and with Smaug.
Life is full of many choices as well as consequences. People are sometimes defined by their actions and decisions they make in life. In life we make many decisions just like in the story Atalanta Race. When a undefeated female hunter is forced into marrying Hippomenes because of a race they competed in to win her love. Hippomenes only wins by cheating during the footrace with shinny gold apples that will get Atalanta’s attention so she will stop and help Hippomenes win the race. She had the choice to keep going and continue the race and continue to be the undefeated woman that everybody wants to be, but she went to the apple. Which therefore meant she would have to marry Hippomenes. The choices that you make have a great effect on your
At the beginning of the adventure, Bilbo was a timid, little hobbit with no idea how to steal or survive outside of his little hobbit hole. When Thorin and the rest of the dwarves first meet Bilbo, they question
Choices essentially are what dictates the path that is traveled and the series of events
displays an arrogant and honorable character who went by the name Thorin Oakenshield. This character lacked the wisdom to understand the true meaning of his adventure and let his arrogance guide his decision to dislike the useful hobbit known as Bilbo Baggins due to his peaceful manner. At this point, Thorin has had no adventure that gave him the wisdom to have a good reason to go on his journey and to not trust someone only by their appearance. Even though he was told multiple times by Gandalf, the great wizard who accompanied the adventures for portions of their journey, to trust Bilbo despite his seemingly peaceful personality, Thorin would not catch on to the wisdom in Gandalf’s words. Even when the party began their journey and saw that Bilbo was intelligent and could fend for himself like when the dwarves were attacked and captured by trolls and attacked by the goblins and Gollum, Thorin never fully congratulated Bilbo on his bravery. He also let his mission to find gold run on his greed. When the party traveled to the last homely home, the book said that Elrond, the leader of the elves at that location,”... did not altogether approve of dwarves and their love of gold.”(pg. 52 The Hobbit, J.R.R Tolkien). Based on this quotation, Thorin still ignored and denied the fact that his greed for the gold that the journey promised in the end would only bring misfortune. The rising action of the journey showed that Thorin Oakenshield
Gandalf is known to hobbits and to Bilbo, but Hobbit are rather isolated (or narrow -minded) in superscript general . As an outsider Gandalf is somewhat not believed, but he is known for his firework which are much liked. Gandalf from his side has taken a liking to Hobbit and knows a peck about them and their taradiddle - so is known in the Shire horse . I think there is a hint that they did meet when Bilbo was a kid , but I do not believe that Bilbo is Trygve Lie or performing here - I teacher (at college ) 't think there is a personal chronicle between him and Gandalf, I just teacher (at college) 't think he remembers anything more than the pyrotechnic presentation . Everyone has choices in life, and these choices are what define us. Sometimes they can affect not only the decision maker, but it can affect others too, whether it is just a few people or it is millions of people. This is why a choice
In the Hobbit there are fourteen main characters as well as many other characters that help along the way. The characters are Gandalf the Wizard, Mr. Bilbo Baggins, Throrin Oakensheild, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Fili, Kili, Bombur, Bifur, Bofur, Dwalin, and Balin. Gandalf is a wizard that helps the dwarves in their various journeys. He knows more than he reveals to the dwarves and everyone else and he knows that the hobbit can help the dwarves in their quest. That hobbit is Mr. Bilbo Baggins.
Choices, they change us as humans and can greatly affect our lives. There is a book that showcases this completely describes this perfectly, this book is Tangerine. In the book Tangerine, many choices are made by the main character, his friends and his family that affects what happens and other people's feelings. Choices, even small ones can change lives.
In the Hero’s Journey, heralds are responsible for introducing the quest to the hero. Not only is Gandalf a mentor, but he is also the herald in The Hobbit. Without Gandalf, the story would almost be non-existent as his archetype’s purpose is to motivate the protagonist to begin the journey. Gandalf’s calling of Bilbo to the journey is introduced during the early stages of the novel (page 15), however, Bilbo does not leave until page 45 where his decision was made on the spot.
Bilbo was able to gain Thorin’s trust and after the Battle of the Five Armies ended, it had made Thorin realize that what he did was the wrong thing to do and he would like to take back his
When Gandalf visits Bilbo he invited Bilbo to join him on an adventure, which Bilbo declines since he is deathly afraid of leaving his home. The next day he is visited by dwarves who believe that he can help them on their journey to Lonely Mountain to recover their ancestral treasure. The comments made by the Dwarves made Bilbo realize that Gandalf had said that Bilbo was a burglar. Bilbo eventually agrees to go, but then changes his mind the next morning, but eventually agrees to go again. After Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves had been traveling for a while Bilbo starts to regret coming on the adventure as the landscape gets a lot more hostile. Shortly after this
This is because he was the one to recruit Bilbo and train him. One example of that is on page 8, andalf demands, “In fact I will go as far as to send you on this adventure” (Tolkien 8). Gandalf wants Bilbo to be a part of the adventure, but Bilbo wants nothing of it. One more piece of evidence is on page 150, the text describes, “THen they knew that Gandalf was going to leave them at the very edge of Mirkwood” (Tolkien 150). In the Hero’s Journey it stated that the hero must fight without the help of the mentor, That’s why Gandalf had to leave, but he later comes back on page 295, Gandalf surprises Bilbo, “There is always more about you than anyone expects!” (Tolkien 295). After his business, Gandalf has come back after the “Great Ordeal”. Bilbo had to get through Mirkwood and Smaug by himself. From the start, Gandalf helped shape Bilbo to become the hero that he is. Although he wasn’t there the entire time, he still made a
At the beginning, Gandalf pretty much has to trick Bilbo into going on this adventure, but by the end of the book, Bilbo is much more courageous and willing to adventure out on his own, as evidenced by his willingness to confront Smaug. Due to Bilbo being a son of a Baggin ’s he was very conservative and didn’t enjoy adventure but due to Bilbo also being a son of a Took’s he was more adventurous and acknowledged life. Bilbo’s Took side convinced him to go on the quest with Gandalf. Bilbo becomes much more adventurous during the book by JRR
