Gandaulf's Choices

Gandalf is a character in the hobbit series, he is the main mastermind behind the dwarves mission, he is a very powerful wizard that helps guide Bilbo and the whole company through emanate danger.

“Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay.” Gandalf claims in the quote above from The Hobbit that great power isn’t always necessary to accomplish great feats. If ordinary people can work as a team, the outcome can defeat an individual with great power. Bilbo and the dwarves assisted each other, and got help from other sources in order to accomplish their goal and grow as characters. This teamwork and growth is shown throughout the scenes of Rivendell, Mirkwood, and with Smaug.

Life is full of many choices as well as consequences. People are sometimes defined by their actions and decisions they make in life. In life we make many decisions just like in the story Atalanta Race. When a undefeated female hunter is forced into marrying Hippomenes because of a race they competed in to win her love. Hippomenes only wins by cheating during the footrace with shinny gold apples that will get Atalanta’s attention so she will stop and help Hippomenes win the race. displays an arrogant and honorable character who went by the name Thorin Oakenshield. This character lacked the wisdom to understand the true meaning of his adventure and let his arrogance guide his decision to dislike the useful hobbit known as Bilbo Baggins due to his peaceful manner. At this point, Thorin has had no adventure that gave him the wisdom to have a good reason to go on his journey and to not trust someone only by their appearance. Even though he was told multiple times by Gandalf, the great wizard who accompanied the adventures for portions of their journey, to trust Bilbo despite his seemingly peaceful personality, Thorin would not catch on to the wisdom in Gandalf’s words. Even when the party began their journey and saw that Bilbo was intelligent and could fend for himself like when the dwarves were attacked and captured by trolls and attacked by the goblins and Gollum, Thorin never fully congratulated Bilbo on his bravery. He also let his mission to find gold run on his greed. When the party traveled to the last homely home, the book said that Elrond, the leader of the elves at that location,”... did not altogether approve of dwarves and their love of gold.”(pg. 52 The Hobbit, J.R.R Tolkien). Based on this quotation, Thorin still ignored and denied the fact that his greed for the gold that the journey promised in the end would only bring misfortune. Gandalf is known to hobbits and to Bilbo, but Hobbit are rather isolated (or narrow -minded) in superscript general . As an outsider Gandalf is somewhat not believed, but he is known for his firework which are much liked. Gandalf from his side has taken a liking to Hobbit and knows a peck about them and their taradiddle - so is known in the Shire horse . In the Hobbit there are fourteen main characters as well as many other characters that help along the way. The characters are Gandalf the Wizard, Mr. Bilbo Baggins, Throrin Oakensheild, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Fili, Kili, Bombur, Bifur, Bofur, Dwalin, and Balin. Gandalf is a wizard that helps the dwarves in their various journeys. He knows more than he reveals to the dwarves and everyone else and he knows that the hobbit can help the dwarves in their quest. That hobbit is Mr. Bilbo Baggins.

Choices, they change us as humans and can greatly affect our lives. There is a book that showcases this completely describes this perfectly, this book is Tangerine. In the book Tangerine, many choices are made by the main character, his friends and his family that affects what happens and other people's feelings. Choices, even small ones can change lives.

In the Hero’s Journey, heralds are responsible for introducing the quest to the hero. Not only is Gandalf a mentor, but he is also the herald in The Hobbit. Without Gandalf, the story would almost be non-existent as his archetype’s purpose is to motivate the protagonist to begin the journey. Gandalf’s calling of Bilbo to the journey is introduced during the early stages of the novel (page 15), however, Bilbo does not leave until page 45 where his decision was made on the spot.

When Gandalf visits Bilbo he invited Bilbo to join him on an adventure, which Bilbo declines since he is deathly afraid of leaving his home. The next day he is visited by dwarves who believe that he can help them on their journey to Lonely Mountain to recover their ancestral treasure. The comments made by the Dwarves made Bilbo realize that Gandalf had said that Bilbo was a burglar. Bilbo eventually agrees to go, but then changes his mind the next morning, but eventually agrees to go again. After Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves had been traveling for a while Bilbo starts to regret coming on the adventure as the landscape gets a lot more hostile. Shortly after this

At the beginning, Gandalf pretty much has to trick Bilbo into going on this adventure, but by the end of the book, Bilbo is much more courageous and willing to adventure out on his own, as evidenced by his willingness to confront Smaug. Due to Bilbo being a son of a Baggin ’s he was very conservative and didn’t enjoy adventure but due to Bilbo also being a son of a Took’s he was more adventurous and acknowledged life.
