The New Mecca In the article “The New Mecca” by author George Saunders, he states that before he visited Dubai, a country in the United Arab Emirates, he had many misinterpretations about the country. As he gets there, he discovers that Dubai is safe; also, the city has majorly grown over the past ten years. Dubai has become a tourist attraction, famous famous for being an extravagant destination in the Middle East. It is expected that Dubai will have the largest skyscraper in the world and many revolutionary architecture will expand throughout the country. If Saunders had not visited Dubai he would still have doubts about the city. He stayed at The Burj Al Arab a luxurious seven star hotel. As he enters he gets greeted with goodies …show more content…
First of all, Saunders reports, “ The Burj Al Arab is the only seven-star hotel in the world, even though the rating system only goes up to five.” (590) This quotations shows how luxurious this hotel is in Dubai it has exceeded the possible rating of five stars. Saunders disbelieved all the luxurious things he had he heard about Dubai that is, until he visited the country and staying at this hotel he realized what luxury actually was. He remembered all the times he had stayed at a fancy place in LA or NY and how it didn't compare to Dubai. In addition, Saunders observes, “Dubai will have: the world’s tallest skyscraper.” (589) This quotation clarifies just how much more extravagant Dubai will become in the near future. Saunders thinks Dubai is already breathtaking as it is but the city still has more to expanding to do. He describes this as “super cool” and its exactly what is is, cool. The project will attract twice the amount tourism and the country will gain more recognition as well. Third, Saunders states, “They go off. I watch them merrily photographing themselves in front of the futuristic fountain.” (590) This quotation indicates how much people love the scenery and how they will take pictures and show others back home. Saunders has many questions regarding those workers, where are they from and why are they there it is unlike for him because he is there as a tourist. He’s fortunate enough …show more content…
to begin with, Saunders says, “ I can’t locate the pedestrian entrance…Anybody who belongs in there will drive in and valet park.” (590) Saunders realizes the type of people this hotel attracts and the type of people they want staying over. Hotel attracts high class individuals which gives the hotel a good look. A low class person could not afford a room for $12,000 a night so it is expected for only high class individuals to arrive. This stays in his conscience because of the social division of people in Dubai. Next, Saunders notes, “Somewhere in India is a guy who’d kill to do some stair-washing in Dubai.” (591) This quotation shows that people in other countries would appreciate a job even if its a job no one would like to do. Saunders feels bad for people that have hard jobs but he knows people in Dubai are making more money there than in their own country. This dwells on his conscience because he knows this man is fortunate to be working although it is not the best job. Finally, Saunders adds, “ I can go home and write about it, making more for writing about it than he’ll make in many, many years of doing it.” (591) This quotation indicates Saunders understands the division of income between the man and him. He knows this man will have hard labor all his life meanwhile Saunders could simply write a something and make the amount of money it would take him,
B. Thesis- Today I would like to inform you about some of the amazing places and things Dubai’s city has, such as their main attractions, malls and astonishing hotels.
For which I am glad about, not for myself, but for all the Muslim Americans affected from post September 11th. Being an American in Saudi Arabia effectively created a bubble for me. September 11th was just another day for us, it was never discussed in detail because of the shame it brought. The circumstances were different there, my American culture was not antagonized, but more so envied. Living there helped develop my character immensely and led to personal growth as a young adolescent. If I had the chance to go back as an adult I would go back in a heartbeat. I miss the one season weather, urban cities, cuisine, and many more. I’m glad I could share my experiences and fictional conversation, and I am looking forward to hearing from Towson
“The New Mecca” is an essay in which author George Saunders engraves different experiences he had throughout his Dubai trip. In the beginning he tells the readers that everything they are going to assume about Dubai is going to be wrong unless they see Dubai by themselves first. He
This quote deals with the theme of economic status in this book. Neither of the Wes Moore’s on the higher side of this money divide. Both families lived in Baltimore area, which is a little on the rundown side. This pushes Wes to find ways to make money himself. Wes falls down the same path Tony did leading to business dealing with drugs.
The author’s goal is to share with lesson he educated from renting the mansion. He understands that pretending to be something he is not, trying to live the life of the higher class, and in the end, he will fail. As Lewis wrote “And so we fled, back to where we’d come from: the upper middle class.” (Lewis). People believe that anyone have a large house means success, and the larger house means the greater success. Furthermore, now days’ people have become obsessed with buying and living in houses most people cannot afford. This obsession has led people to drown themselves in superfluous debt. Through these devices, Lewis confirms that his knowledge servers as a consequence for us to not do anything in the end we cannot carry it and it becomes a burden on
The same was sent (twice) to our Mayor John Tory, on June 16. However, it appears that this is not an important issue, as I had not received any comments from him.
Robin Bell is a multimedia artist who in may projected or 10 minutes ‘Pay Trump bribes here’ to ‘offer a moment of reprieve in what he called ‘depressing’ times’. Having projected words onto Trump hotel will cause a reaction with the people that view it. With this action, it changes the image of the Trump hotel from being a building to a piece of work. It’s a temporary change, things that buildings don’t do naturally, only through manipulation.
When he questions, “This place is about to pop?” he refers to the development of war or “Some kind of terror. Something like the 1979 massacre at Mecca”(Eggers, 154). Historians consider the uprising at the mosque in Mecca as “The most dramatic post war example of Saudi problems with extremists before the rise of Osama Bin Laden” (Cordesman, 14). The assault occurs during the Hajj pilgrimage, an event that represents the most important manifestation of Islamic faith. Members of puritanical Wahhabi tribes guide the uprising in order to accuse the King of corruption and alliance with the Western countries. Nevertheless, Anthony H. Cordesman, author of Saudi Arabia Enters The 21st Century, states that the attack on the mosque emphasizes the “commitment to Islamic education and the enforcement of strict “Wahhabi” social practices” (Cordesman, 15). First, he denounces the failure of the government to modernize teaching practices and the segregation of women’s education. Then, he mentions that after the attack the religious surveillance over the population increases and Mutawwa’in, police of public virtue, gain more
“ Jack London grew up working-class… In his free time he hunkered down at libraries, soaking up novels and travel books.” (Biography, Jack London). With these years if experience, the fiction writer learned to live without many luxuries, making him more humble and preparing him for his future success. One of the most famous quotes said by him is “life is not always a matter of holding good cards, but sometimes, playing a poor hand well.” This saying is followed by many centuries after, due to the great message behind it. London always enjoyed incorporating wording that not ever naive mind could understand, later leading to great works, enjoyed by all
Tourism is a very significant factor to Morocco’s economy, as foreign direct investments total over 30 billion Euros in the past ten years. In fact, in 2009, Morocco was the only Mediterranean country to have increased more than 6% while the world market decreased by 5% (Invest in Morocco). Now, tourism in Morocco serves as 20% of the county’s GDP and has over 10 million visitors. The government sponsors enormous marketing campaigns to advertise Morocco as a cheap and exotic, yet safe, place for European tourists. Hotels, transportation, and tourist attractions all hold relatively low prices. Cheap air services have been established between Algeria and Morocco and excellent road and rail infrastructures link the major cities within the country itself to provide an easier route for all citizens and travelers. As for superstructure, King Mohammed VI has developed a large-scale project to internationalize Morocco. The project is known as “Plan Azur.” According to the government of the Kingdom of Morocco, the plan has a view to create a series of quality hotels, in respect to the principles of sustainable development. Specifically, it is designed to initialize the development of six world-class resorts: Saida in the province of Berkane, Lixus in Larache Province, Mogador in the Essaouira province, Taghazout in the province of Agadir, and White Beach in the province of Guelmim (Ministry of Tourism of Morocco). The plan is also designed to increase the development of new train and road links for tourists to travel among the many cities of Morocco, while making it easy to also reach Spain, France, and neighboring African countries, because most tourists come from the European countries. In fact, a growing number of Europeans are actually buying real estate in Morocco, now, due to the new plan and the higher sustainability projects. Unfortunately, tourism in Morocco has led to the undermining of Moroccan

Justification: The United Arab Emirates is one of the fastest developing nations in the world in terms of infrastructure. One of the key elements contributing to the development of the UAE is the country’s booming tourist industry, whose growth can be attributed to several leaders in the country. However, one leader stands out in particular, and that is the UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash. Dr Anwar’s achievements as a leader have been given a great deal of significance as they have resulted in changing the face of the UAE.
The city of Dubai has many attractions that bring personnel from all faces of the world to visit. Attractions such as the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Mall of the Emirates, Ferrari World, and the Burj Khalifa stand out as massive tourist attractions, bringing revenue to support the country’s economy. With the creation of Etihad and Emirates airlines, tourism through Dubai helps the economy flourish (Morton, 2011).
AlMansouri also said that there are plans to hold exhibitions in the largest tourism markets and that the goal of the “Emirates for Hospitality” is to improve local human resources in the tourism sector. There are some disadvantages with boosting tourism in the UAE. The first disadvantage that the boost of tourism brought to the country is that we lost our culture. Our rich cultural heritage are diminished.People became more westernized. Citizens don’t follow the dress standards and elders are frustrated. Moreover, some tourists often don’t respect the UAE’s traditions and culture such as not following traditional dress standards or getting drunk in public. The second disadvantage is that there are more traffic in the country. In fact, citizens avoid the famous malls and tourist destinations because of the traffic. There are number of advantages affecting the country and society from boosting tourism in the UAE. The first and the main advantage is that tourism brings money. As Almansouri noted "Estimates indicate that the tourism sector will contribute 5.4 percent annually over the next 10 years to reach AED 236.8 billion by year 2026." This means that the income produced from tourism can make up a noticeable percentage of the national income. The second advantage, is tourism will provide more jobs for the UAE locals and non-locals. Some of these jobs are hotels, transportation, shops, restaurants and other places that needs staffing. As a matter of
Omani tourism remains a relatively recent phenomenon, having cautiously been initiated in the late 1980s and gaining momentum in the middle part of the following decade. The Sultanate’s tourism development policy, which strives for quality over quantity, is evident in the building of prestigious five-star hotels such as the al-Bustan Palace Hotel to house the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (AGCC) Summit.
