America during the gilded age
The Gilded Age was an era after the civil war in the United States in which the economy thrived in a rapidly paste. Mark Twain because of the corruption over money and power gave the name to this era. The businessmen during this period were known for their ruthless actions and for the thirst over money. During the Gilded Age the cities grew as well as the population. The social, political and economic structures changed during the Gilded Age of the late 19h century.
As the economy grew the hopes and dreams of million of people did as well. During this era the United States welcomed a lot of immigrants looking for jobs in factories. Most of the people migrating were from lower classes looking for jobs opportunities. These people settled near the factories and created small communities with people that shared their same culture. As the economy and the independent companies grew more powerful the government had a hard time adjusting which led the United States to opt for a hands off approach. This led to many conflicts within the people and the government. The Wealthy company owners completely controlled the government for their personal gain. The poor classes had no say whatsoever because of the corruption and the power of the businessmen. Document E shows the way in which the rich businessmen controlled the government by illustrating a wealthy man looking down and controlling the white house (government) from the palm of his hand. We can also see that the government was more interested in the wealth than the people because the artist drew many industries behind the capitol. The government had many administrative issues and the Politian’s were more interested in gaining personal wealth than building a strong
