Globalization and Youth

Youth has various definitions. It can be considered as a state of mind, a life stage, or a stage of development. Youth can also be considered as a creation of marketing and a demographic category. Youth cultures as well as subcultures based on the theory or theories applied refer to cultures that in most part comprise of young people as the members. Youth cultures are determined by ways of living and they revolve around peer groups that stress a definitive style of living as an external designation of affiliation and appearance. In this essay, I will analyse how globalisation, popular culture, and consumerism emerge as factors that influence the participation of young people in the hip-hop youth culture in Australia. I will also apply the human ecological theory in order to facilitate the understanding of factors that affect youth participation in the hip-hop culture.

Culture can be defined as the shared values, customs, beliefs, behaviours and knowledge of a particular group or society.[1] Similarly, youth culture refers to the shared values, etc. of individuals in their teenage and young adult years. During the last century, the world around us has changed greatly, and as a result of this, so too has youth culture changed. In this investigation, the ways in which social change has influenced youth culture from the 1960’s to today will be explored and how changes in factors such as the media and technology, male/female roles in relationships, attitudes towards parents and elders and values have played a part in shaping this.

It has been said that “Today’s youths are the force, the hope and the leaders of tomorrow”. We are the driving force for change and we live with the hope of a better future, we have the ability of not only being tomorrow’s leaders, but today’s as well.

We all come across with the term globalization. The developing countries have battled with increased globalization. But be careful, the effects of globalization are very complex as well as far-reaching. No doubt there are certainly some positive effects, but one cannot overlook the negative consequences of globalization over the area like cultures in the widespread developing world. Globalization is a nothing but the concept that symbolize the contested visions of a worldwide identity. We all live in a globalized world; due to technologies being rapidly made it has driven globalization. Now we are well informed about other countries across the entire world and able to communicate internationally. Globalization has created a framework for cooperation among homelands. Generally, it has affected our nations and, indirectly we, the citizens in various ways; economically, politically, and socially, however it is a fast integration and association of various nations, which shapes the world affairs on a global level. The concept of globalization is evident in the many difficult challenges that come with it, involving our cultural differences, and the regulating challenge of globalizations. Although the first use of the term ‘globalization’ can be traced back to the 1940s, it was only after half a century that this concept stormed the public consciousness. The buzzword ‘globalization’ exploded into the ‘Roaring nineties’ because it captured the increasingly interdependent nature of social life on this planet. Earlier the concept of globalization was viewed as a techo-economic juggernaut spreading western culture and the intellection of capitalism and quashing local beliefs and national traditions. Thus, it was viewed as a ripple of Americanization. One corollary of the propagation of this perspective created fears in the minds of people, who had utter love and affection towards their own culture.

There are a multitude of observations that can be made when analyzing the life of youth today, then of our parents in the 1960-70’s era. Economic and social transformations that have a direct impact on youth and how it is experienced today, particularly in the workplace can be evaluated through the sociological concepts of Globalisation and Social Change and are noticeably intertwined. We see in Australia that Globalisation has been a driver in exacerbating inequality in our society from that of the youth under the age of 21 in the 1960-70’s era to now. Through the increase in worldly connectedness we are met with diversity, both in people and the sharing of information via technology which has stimulated Social Change. Norris (2000) highlights

In the American society, many adolescents are living in the generation where privilege is always handed to them. However, this need to be privileged has created a negative impact on the American youth. Many are becoming ignorant toward the ongoing challenges that other adolescents face such as hunger and poverty. Living in a privileged environment protects these ignorant adolescents from these prevailing challenges. Nowadays the American youth is more concerned about the social life of famous people, who serve as the allegorical figures of our age giving the human representation of what the youth cares about.
