Gordon College: A Career As An English Teacher

I believe that education is the key in developing today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders. Education is the basis on which individuals develop their self-concept and the desire to become more knowledgeable. I want to become an educator because I am interested in helping elementary students become active learners and also to assist with their social skills. I believe I can make a difference to many students as they start their educational foundation. I feel that all teachers should possess the desire to devote their hard work and efforts to their students’ educational success. An elementary educator also needs to have a wide personality. By “wide” I mean they should be prepared to multitask, learn not to get distracted easily and really know how to connect with children. Teaching a child is not easy, so they need to demonstrate self-control, concern, independency, tolerance, and flexibility. A good teacher is known as a teacher who is willing to help others and learn how to cooperate.

I have had a lifetime goal to attend college, it just didn’t happen early in life. When I first came to CCU, there was no doubt that getting my bachelors in early childhood would be my major. My passion has always been young children. It started when I babysat as a young teenager and has continued in my life as a preschool teacher. Education is constantly changing: therefore, I feel I need to have more knowledge and wisdom to be the best teacher possible. Education is by far one of the most important tools to have a successful life. With diligence, I want to be a leading educator and to be a gateway for my students to learn. It’s exhilarating how many lives a teacher will touch each day. A teacher has the power to reach out and make learning a positive and memorable experience for every child. Furthermore, teachers are one of the first caregivers for young children. Although I am not at the beginning of my career, while at CCU, I will grow in faith, help and learn from others, and strive to graduate with honors.

My motivation for pursuing graduate studies specifically at University of Maryland is because of the rigor and quality of instruction from the College of Education that I received firsthand. The area I am most interested is elementary education and certified in bilingual education. When I moved to this beautiful country without knowing anything about the culture or the language, my teachers were those who supported me and taught me the language. They helped me to integrate into this peculiar country. My teachers are the ones who inspired me to study and become a bilingual teacher. Currently, my intended career path is to teach English in a Texas High School classroom. Although I’m open to teaching any of the grades encompassed in the secondary- level certification, right now I am looking towards either English II or English IV in the tenth grade and twelfth grade year respectively. Elementary teachers not only introduce their students to the basic concepts of core subjects, they also help pave the path to each student’s future success. Education to become a teacher is long and tedious, and while the income may not be the highest available, watching students develop a new skill or grow an appreciation for learning can be very rewarding. Because there will always be a need for education, even with the recent budget cuts, teaching jobs will always have to be available somewhere.

In my future career I aspire to teach English for Specific Purposes. These purposes can include academic English, scientific English, or possibly medical English. I hope to inspire adults to expand their profession or young adults to pursue a career related to the topic of English, so that they might share and gain knowledge with others around the world. These students may come from various backgrounds and L1s (depending on where I teach) and will likely be in an EFL context. Unless I teach in Canada, and then that would be an ESL classroom.

I am a prospective Secondary English teacher; therefore, this career equity report will be focusing on high school teachers. Before researching, I would like to write down what I already know about teachers. Compared to many other professions, the average salary is low and the number of women in the occupation is high. However, I am planning to teacher English in Japan after graduating from college; therefore, I will try to incorporate something about Japan’s English teachers as well. I would like to teach English in Japan for about 3 years through the Japanese English Teacher Programme (JET) before I find a job with a private school. Along with teaching, I plan on working as a freelance translator for companies.
